Default need help with ej20 swap in my 99 2.5 rs

im gonna do a ej20 swap in my 99 2.5rs and i need to know how hard it is and if there is anything i need to worry about or need when i do the swap or is it just a straight drop in or what. the mechanic says it would be better to just sell it and buy a newer turbo wrx but i love my car and would never sell it and want it to be turbo. thanks to anyone who can help me out.

you will want someone to do the wiring. other than that it is direct drop in.

Where are you located?

That would help a lot.

East Coast Swappers, and Garage Tuning. Those are two places I would go

I'm working on a swap myself right now. Its a 2004 EJ205 into a 2000 2.5RS. If you can get a complete swap from a vendor, it saves a lot of time and money. I did not, and now I'm tracking down a bunch of small parts here and there. The only reason I didn't go the vendor route is because I got a complete engine (minus a few small parts) for next to nothing, so from a dollar point of view it works for me.

Like everyone said the wiring is the most difficult, time consuming part of the swap. If you're handy with automotive wiring and can read wiring diagrams than the splicing isn't that bad, you just have to take your time and double check everything. If you're a relative noob at mechanical and eletrical work then get someone else to take care of it. If you do have someone else merge the wiring harnesses make sure you account for it in your budget. The labor involved will not be cheap, plan on about $800-$1000 for the labor.

You can keep your current transmission, if you don't you will have to swap the rear diff. also to match the final drive ratio of the front diff. If you do keep your RS transmission you might want to get a new clutch with a higher torque capacity. But my personal opinion is its better to fry your clutch than to trash you transmission.

From a mechanical stand point everything will drop in and bolt up no problem. The only troubles I foresee with my swap right now is my evap system may not work 100%, but I'm working on that.

Some other things to concider is the fact that depending on which engine you plan on using for the swap will determine which parts you will need for the swap, such as drive by wire throttle for example.

I'm with you, I'll never give up my first gen. coupe. I love the light little car with a short wheel base, it keeps you on your toes. I guess my advice to you would be make sure you do A LOT of homework before doing or making any rash decisions. Best of luck with your swap.

Go to the Conversions section, there is a huge sticky with pictures on doing the wiring for this swap, even putting in the heated seats.

Not 100% sure but I think you can ship East Coast Swappers the wiring harness for your car and the swaps harness and they could merge them and then they will ship it back ready to drop into your car.

Don’t quote me on this but worth a shot calling them.

Also best bet is to keep an eye on the full part out classifieds section, be the first one on there and dib everything. lol

I am in the process of finishing a swap myself, but I am swapping "everything".

I m doing everything from the wrx steering column to wrx 4 way brakes, even a wrx FUEL TANK.

You don’t necessarily need to do all this to complete a swap but I was able to source this at a price worth doing! Also a transmission is definitely worth doing (just an opinion), the 2.5rs tranny will bolt up but depending on your driving style, is what will determined if it will hold up!

Good Luck with the swap definitely worth doing. Hope it’s not your daily driver, expect some major downtime.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

from a reliability, safety, and cost perspective, that makes ALOT more sense than a full swap.

But not as fun!!!!!!!!!!!

A swapped GC can be made reliable and can be had way under $25,000.
Also thats not considering insurance is way cheaper on a 10yr old car than on a NEW WRX!
