i think you should recrop it if you can so that the exhaust isn't cut off, it will be much more well off if you get the car in frame top to bottom and not cut it off.
Yep, I agree with this advice. That fence totally ruins that night shot, and honestly I wouldn't even bother taking night photos without a tripod unless you have some sort of bright artificial lighting, but that brings in something else entirely. Night shots tend to be more difficult anyway even if you have a tripod.

In your first shot, I would've tried to have the car take up 2/3 of the frame to follow rule of thirds...having it take up half just doesn't feel balanced correctly.

I love the sky and flare in this shot, although you have some minor halo affect going on in the tree on the right. The problem of course is just the fact that the car's wheels are behind the curb and it's just parked in a parking lot with a bunch of other random cars (not to mention the giant tree growing out of the car). So, good edit, but not the best starting photo.

Your photo of the F4 Phantom is tough because the only real color in the photo is the grass on the right. The plane and the sky are both grey (which of course is done on purpose), so it's hard to make them stand out from one another. On top of that, there's a bunch of other distractions in the photo, such as the fence at the bottom right and the cable running down the right side of the plane.

The night shot is pretty good, but I probably would've given it a bit more exposure and made sure that it's straight. Right now, you can see the pillars leaning toward the right a little bit. However, the composition is very sound

Your first photo isn't working...but the light painting experiment looks like a good start. You really need a larger light source for light painting to work right, not to mention multiple exposures. Also, don't forget to white balance properly, since the light on the black car is way too blue. And yes, that last photo isn't straight for some reason.

I've got a few things to share that have been taking up my time these past few weeks. First is my coverage from Evergreen Drift two weeks ago:

here is the broken one. in this one i overlayed 3 different pictures because everytime i would set the exposure and go run around with my phone it some areas would be more exposed than others...i'm relatively happy with this shot minus the obvious reflections. i'm still new to this as i found a plug-in for aperture that lets you overlay. any way i can edit any of that out, i tried with the clone and retouch brush, but i'm not good enough with it and it just looked hacked.

anyway i know i need actualy good lighting and not just a tiny LED flash from my phone, but shooting in complete darkness i find to be more fun, and i can get more creative because i dont know how to use aperture or photoshop to make certain parts of the car or photo completely black or very underexposed in the photograph.

Here is the last effort on this photo Armin. I lightened the right side of the vehicle and gave the colors a little more punch. Final edit?

And another one more from there.

Ya that's kinda what I figured on the plane. Thanks for the feedback.

The other I didn't have a tripod and it was kinda point and shoot with my dslr and a guess on the exposure and everything. I haven't photoshopped it yet

When doing your drifting shot or rolling shots, do you put your camera in Shutter Speed priority then? Are you just following the vehicle as it moves and choosing a shutter speed to get the car in focus but keep everything else in motion?

Any advice on them? I'll practice some when I get home, but would be nice to have to tips for it going into the process.

Well, lighting it yourself without relying on a computer to fix things is the old school way. Definitely nothing wrong with it...if anything it's a lot more difficult. I'd say it looks pretty good despite the reflections, but you really should straighten this one too. I don't think Aperture is going to be enough to remove those reflections properly...that's definitely something that'll require PS.

I definitely like the first one better. It gives a more complete overall scene, and it shows that you took your time to compose the photo. With this final edit, I think this is rightfully deserved

You've really shown good improvement with each set you post up. Take a look at this one and then go back and look at your first post here to see how far you've come. I'd give yourself a pat on the back!

Looks pretty good despite the overexposure. You should be able to correct some of that in Lightroom by turning down the Whites and/or Highlights. Just make sure the sky doesn't turn a muddy grey color. I'd alos straighten it so that the hummingbird feeder was perfectly vertical.

Shooting drifting (or any kind of panning) is quite different than shooting a rolling shot, since in a rolling shot, your car and the subject car are trying to match the same speed, so things are more constant. With a panning shot, you've got a car driving past you and you have to pivot yourself to follow the car as you shoot.

Shutter priority works fine for panning, but I usually shoot in manual so that I can control my aperture as well as my shutter speed. I will often shoot rolling shots in shutter priority simply because the aperture isn't quite as important to the overall photo. When panning, you want to position yourself so that you have free movement of your torso/upper body to follow the car going past you.

I usually advise people to start shooting panning at a 1/160 sec shutter speed, shooting with continuous focus on a single focus point in continuous drive (aka burst mode). You'll get a few photos of the car, but that'll give you the best chance to get a sharp one. Better you have a bunch of sharp ones that you can pick from than hoping for the best with a single shot every time. Some people might say "oh you just don't know how to take a single good photo," but when you're covering an event, you can't really take chances like that to make sure you get the shot. After all, when you see people shooting the Olympics, they're not just taking one photo at a time

Since you get consistent with 1/160 sec, then you can start slowing down the shutter. It just simply takes a lot of practice. I'm able to get consistent shooting at 1/30 sec, but that's taken me over a year of practice to get to that point. It's not easy, and it's easy to get frustrated, but keep working at it and you can get good at it. Just keep in mind of course that you'll still want to compose your photos as you shoot...one of the things I've noticed from some of our local drift photographers is that they care more about getting the capture at the expense of good composition.
