Default Looking for local shop to look over an STi I'd like to buy this weekend!

Ok, looks like I may be going with a new subie after all this time instead of the S4...just came across a nice extremely low mileage STi and I would like to have the car looked over by a qualified subaru mechanic for piece of mind.

Since I'm not too familiar with any subie specialty shops on the peninsula other than a couple dealers carlsen, and ron price, where would be the best place to go. I would like to do this either this friday or saturday so a shop with weekend hrs may be necessary.

Whats out there and in the san mateo to daly city area...any specific ppl you recommend who can help me out...how much would a shop charge for this...what should they look for on an 04 with ~1000miles?

The owner is a nice older gentleman who is willing to meet me at a local shop. If everything checks out smoothly, and right now I have no reason to think otherwise, I'll be pretty excited about making the transaction the same day.

thx again for the recommendations

Kevin at Auto Headquarter (AHQ) 650 Broadway St. Redwood St. unit 4a Phone # 650 368-3290.

Kevin was a certified Subaru master mechanic and went out on his own. Good prices and totally knowledgable.

We are lucky in the Bay area there are many good suby guys:

AHQ
Gruppe-s
LIC
MPJ
Santa Cruz Subaru (Dealer)

They each have their strong points. I was thinking AHQ because Kevin was a Suabru Master Mechanic who not only is a great guy, but crazy knowledgeable about what a Subaru engine should look like and has probably done hundreds of inspections for the dealership he used to work at.

Gruppe-s has several excellent mechanics and one super mechanic, Dev and a super tuner Mike. The sales guys, Max, Preston and the others really know their stuff, kind of unusual for sales guys huh? Since they also sell parts and often have what you need in stock and since they both sell and install, they can give good advice about what is required or recommended for a particular project. These are car enthusiasts doing car stuff, what more could anyone want?

MPJ has suspension, exhaust and bushings that Gruppe-s usually doesn't carry. The parts guy Soren can get what you need and he knows about the parts because he has the same parts on his car. The wrenching side of the house is run by Gino, who will get the work done cheaper than anyone I know. They have a good mechanic, but he works on lots of stuff not just Subies, so if you need work done on any car, give MPJ a call.

LIC is in the Northbay and best known for motorswaps. Adam is an outstanding Suby mechanic and Noah answers the phone Just kidding. These guys are great, they know every part of the suby and have hook ups for parts and go out of their way to make sure you are complete when you leave. The rates are really good for mechanic work and for quality work the deal is excellent.

Subaru of Santa Cruz, I had my 60K done here and I recommend them highly for “dealership” type of work. So if you need oil or fluids changed, if you need a 60K and are in that area they do good work. They also give you a free loaner. This is good if you have overnight dealership type of work to be done. NOTE: Kevin at AHQ can also do this work, he is one of the best Suby mechanics I know about.

I have had work done on my car by all of the above. I have NO complaints about any of them on either cost, value, quality or timeliness. They are all excellent investments.

Thank you for the insightful replies...recommendations go a long way in my book for the people I do business with. We should rename this thread to Best Bay Area Subie friendly shops!

...I will be picking up the STI tomorrow morning...guess its time to post for a trunk swap for a regular wrx wing on an 2004 Java Black Pearl...any takers for trunk + a little cash to fund part of my V1 purchase
