The light doesn't have to work on the AC button to send the request. You can actual see what is being requested in one of the tools menus.

To me it sounds like your coolant thermostat is stuck open.

Also if your AC request was never on but the AC Comp output was and the fans ran, you likely have a short circuit somewhere. .maybe the wire to the AC Comp itself is pinched in the engine bay.

Phil,

I need to re-pin the connectors on my harness.

Is this GM 12146447 the correct part number for the terminal?

And is this the correct tool to de-pin them?

I figured it out. Those are in fact the terminals and you really don't need more than a paperclip to de-pin them.

The next question is:

I have a situation where I set the thermofan to turn on at 200 degrees but the temperature creeps up well past that (verified on Hydra) and the fans still don't turn on. However, if I change the output parameter from thermofan to 'on' the fans switch on (so I know the connection to the fans is solid). What else should I check?

Default The Hydra Thread

Hey guys, I'm trying to tune a car with hydra, but the ecu is password protected so I cannot data log and or view the current tune. I believe the car was tuned by George at P&L in Chicago previously. Is there anyway I can get access to the ecu without the password? Or should I contact P&L to get the password?

Default Timing retards when I hit boost?

Hi, whenever I go into boost, the Hydra is dropping my timing back to the very lowest level. I've looked everywhere in settings to see what is making it do this and am at my wits' end. Has anyone ever experienced this, and if so what the heck is causing this??? I appreciate any help being pointed in the right direction.

I've seen that happen many times if you try to use a newer software version with an older firmware box. When you try to take off it retards the timing and runs like it trying to tow a house.

Either upgrade your firmware or switch back to the proper software version and reload the map.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the help SWOOP_G. You are right about using the 2.7 software on a 2.5. The previous owner told us he had sent it back, so it would run on the 2.7 software.
I found the 2.5 software online, and now my only problem is, I can't get it to connect to the hydra.

Awesome! I'm not really familiar with the 2.5 software anymore. I know there was some issues and certain settings that were needed for USB to Serial adapters though.

Which version of the software are you using (2.5, 2.6, or 2.7)?

Typically this is a sign you're "launch or anti-lag" maps are turning on. You can log the request flag in 2.7 and you can view in panel with 2.6. A simple fix is to turn off any of those requests in your "auxiliary input requests"

2.6 and 2.7 also have gear based trim maps etc. If you're not running an Element Tuning base map odds are some of these maps are wrong and could be pulling timing.

Default Thank you for chiming in, Phil!

As GabTom (my bf) said above, it is 2.5 device, however the previous owner said that he'd "sent it back" (presumably to Hydra) to run on the 2.7 software. I assume that meant upgraded. We cannot connect to the Hydra with anything other than 2.7 software on our 'puter tho so aren't sure if it truly was rolled back? Hydra info says the platform is 2.7084. I don't know if this will help but the s/n is: FHZ050111C2.7-W11534

He said he has gone to the auxiliary inputs and turned everything to "off". He has also zero'ed out any of his anti-lag ignition trims, just to be safe, since that was his first thought when he saw it was initially going into negative timing.

Originally this was an ET map, however it's impossible for us to know how much that base map was altered before we purchased it.

This is in a Factory Five 818 and is plenty fast already, we just know it will be even more rip-roaring awesome if we can get this tuned right! For now, we've set the lower ignition limit to 10 degrees & it immediately kicks down to 10 when we hit boost.

Oh, one other thought: I'm not sure if the Hydra uses the MAF sensor at all to calculate load, but I do have that in a blow-through configuration just before the throttle body so I know that would throw off a normal (stock) ECU's load site. I am not sure if that would throw off a Hydra or not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We totally think you rock, and love watching your race videos!

We sell a tech support package for second hand Hydras and I really think you need it. There are so many layers to the mapping and I'm sure if this unit does not have a specific ET 2.7 map there's likely a trim being applied somewhere either gear based, speed based, or other. It will save a you a ton of grief and time to start with a known well tuned base map.

The Hydra only uses MAF for air temperature input. Speed, throttle, coolant temp, air temp, gear, boost, knock threshold, launch, anti-lag, and auxiliary maps all have ignition trim tables.

Thanks Phil, I will probably take you up on the tech support package. I'm a pretty confident with my tuning abilities, but I just want to be sure on the non standard things.
I did find my timing issue thanks to your help. My gear ignition trim was set to -64 in every gear, I never thought to check that. I think I'm going to have to use the gear boost trim, as I'm now smoking tires in the first 3 gears at only 13 pounds of boost.
I'll give you guys a call at Element to discuss the tech support package.

Thanks again, Tom

Is anybody running a drive by cable ej255 swap in their wrx with avcs? I need some pointers on how to wire the avcs solenoids to a hydra 2.7 ems.

I'm running an ej255 longblock in my bugeye, stock 03 wiring harness and dbc throttle, the avcs solenoids and cam sensors just unplugged for now.

Does anyone have a picture of their hydra installed? I cant figure out how to tuck this all under the kick panel.

EDIT

Got it. Seems I don't have the kick panel spacers.

Sure Hydra EMS/Element Tuning offers a plug-in harness for the 2002 RS using the oem RS chassis harness. If you're going to run an STI motor it's a custom harness with the required additional flying leads to ru an STI engine while using an RS chassis harness and Hydra EMS.

How much STI vs how much RS is left really needs to be discussed with a phone call. Some convert to DBW throttle, etc. In any event, yes but custom harness and custom Hydra EMS mapping. Done often so no big deal.

Email Element Tuning with your year/make/model and engine details and it's as simple as that. Units just came off backorder also.

I didn't know they were on backorder. We are talking to a couple of customers about going Hydra at the shop (SM Motorsports). Are there any new things in the works that you have heard?

Everything has been working good for us, but we would like USB, more datalog storage, and more control over closed loop.

Just curious, it's been a while since there has been an update to the hardware or software.

Hello,

have a problem starting my93 wrx type ra with hydra 2.5 ...
Have spark and fuel pressure/fuel pulse, and did crank trigger test (got trigger wheels from wrx, as the pre-owner said)...

While cranking battery voltage goes does to 10V (think the hydra requires 10,4V). Battery is new.
Also new crank and cam sensors.

Maybe someone has an idea why the voltage goes down like this

I don't think their website has been updated since 2013. Take that to mean whatever you may think it does.
