2.2l to ??? Subaru techs help please
So I have a 97 and a 99 impreza. I want to keep the 97 and if its possible to swap the 97 motor in the 99. Reason being is i need to get the 99 running but cant find a 2.2 anywhere or even a 2.5rs. So im debating on just buying a jdm motor here in fl off ebay. They have a ej25-de and ej20t buggy motor? What are some swaps that will work for my 97 impreza. Looking to spend no more than 1g with shipping. I no its not much but thats all i have at the moment. Please help me out guys and point me in the right direction. Thanks

Well, I just got an ej20k (a later model JDM WRX 2.0L), entire wiring harness, full TBE, axles, just everything you need for $1552 with tax and all. So, it's possible to get a good JDM engine for a good price, but for less than a grand I couldn't find anything but a JDM NA 2.5. Or an ej20h, which is what you were talking about with the dune buggy engine. They call it an ej20TT or something, but that isn't the right code. And a ej20g is a earlier model WRX and the very early turbo Legacys.
And to address the question about swapping that motor(ej20h) into a GC8 or GF8, it can technically can be done, but it's going to cost way more than a grand. Because you'll really need an entire front clip because you have to swap firewalls to mount your brake booster and master cylinder to the other side to have enough room for the second turbo. And then the only real good one I've seen they went ahead and converted to RHD! Which is better anyways! I wish mine was RHD! And if you really wanted you could swap your 97 motor into the 99, I'm guessing the 97 is a 1.8, since you didn't think you could just do that in the first place. But those ECUs are interchangeable. Well, I know the OBD1s are. But, now that I think about it I don't know if it'll work the same. I want to say that you could just run that 1.8 in your 2.2 99 with the 2.2 ecu with no problems, but with like the check engine light on. I'm not 100% on the OBD2 ECUs, but I'd say it'd work just because everything else from the "ej" engine line is interchangeable. Last edited by davedaman77; 08-09-2008 at 11:23 PM. |

Thanks for the info. Ill pass on the ej20h. To much work and no money. I was just asking because believe or not in Fl you really cant find any subaru motors. I happen to look on ebay and someone local was selling those motor. BTW both impreza's have 2.2l Motors. 97 I think is a phase 1 and the 99 is a phase 2. Anybody else know if its easy swap? What would I have to change? Davedaman77 who did you buy your motor from. I tried to look for it and all i got was the ej20tt. Thanks for the info

I traveled 5 hours to their warehouse in Augusta, GA. Which is on the GA-SC line. So, I saved $200+++ in shipping and only had to pay 60 dollars for gas! I love my wagon! But, yeah they fit the entire engine/trans/wiring/intercooler/full TBE/etc in the back of the wagon and it made it home great!! |

A 2.5l Phase I will plug and play with either your ECU or the 2.5l ECU. That's 97-99 legacy/outback, 98 RS, 98 forester.
The 99 2.2l is Phase II it will require a few changes for MAF/MAP and crank sensor etc. It has been covered in this forum before if you search back a couple of years. The JDM stuff will cost you much more than $1000 to do properly. |
