Question

Hey guys, new to the forum. I have a 94 Impreza L 1.8, and I'm looking to convert it from NA to Turbo. Anyone have any suggestions? It only have 87k miles on it so I want to upgrade it and play with it

Get a TD04. You don't want much boost on a N/A as compression will be higher, run wastegate pressure and enjoy till it goes pop

THIS LIST WAS CREATED WITH THE MY02-07 IN MIND. DO EXTRA RESEARCH IF YOU HAVE A MY08+ TO ENSURE FITMENT.

I think most of you have noticed there are very few resources available that list most of the popular turbocharger upgrades in one place available to Subaru owners. Here is my attempt to fix that. I hope that it will help some of you decide which turbo will suit your needs.

Some people need specific information to help make their decision, such as how fast a turbo spools or how much power they can make. The problem is that this information can vary from vehicle to vehicle for many different reasons (some of you with these turbos may notice your results vary). However, there is a general consensus that I tried to find or create. I think I am fairly accurate in these figures, but if I’m totally off base let me know and I’ll fix it. If any of you would like to share your experiences or add information, feel free. I did my best to make it comprehensive but I could definitely add more.
BTW, for consistency if you want to contribute spool rates please do so in 3rd gear for 5spd WRX’s and in 4th gear for 6spd STI’s.

I will do my best to keep this thread alive by updating or bumping now and then to help educate the community.

If you need more basic information on turbochargers or turbocharging to start, I recommend you read Unabomber’s Turbo FAQ.

Here is another thread I started that gives more insight on turbocharger performance.

A couple other links of interest:

Thanks for the info this was one of the reasons I joined

Extremely useful thread! I wish I had this information when I was shopping around earlier this year. I decided on the Blouch TD06H-20G knowing pretty little about my car, but ended up with good results! The spool time is lengthier than the previous ebay nameless turbo (which was expected) but I've been loving it, and still have room for better performance with a couple better mods!

Default Need some help with my turbo

Hey, first post, so if anyone can help, it would be appreciated. I have an 02 WRX with an upgraded/replaced turbo that has some pretty serious lag, it really starts coming on at about 4000-4500 RPM, and I want to see what I can do to get that down to something more streetable. Bought it with quite a few upgrades including fuel pump, injectors, intercooler, 4 inch downpipe, 3 inch exhaust, etc. Supposedly has 18 psi boost, but boost gauge is in atmospheres instead of psi, turbo was supposedly ceramic coated, but have not pulled it off to verify. Turbo is an ihi turbo but I can't find the manufacturing numbers, exhaust housing numbers are R5 E1 17 3CG. Not sure what those mean, and I have spent the last 3 hours looking at forums and wbsites trying to figure it out. Any help or direction would really be appreciated, thanks!

Do you have a front mount intercooler? If so, taking that off and putting back the top mount should alleviate some lag.

Has anyone made a hybrid build on one or just trash them and move on to get a VF37 or 36? I came across one for 100$ and I couldn't pass it up. For my 04 WRX the compressor housing from the 38 isn't going to work and I don't really want to swap a VF43 compressor housing on there because the compressor wheel will be to small to fill the void. I've been looking at VF54 billet wheels and that would fill the void but I feel like the turbine shaft will be to short for the wheel to mount. Just seeing if any one has made a hybrid 38 really and what they did and what was pushed out of it.

Lightbulb Help needed in the north east uk..!!!

Hi to my fellow subaru owners far and wide..!!
I’ve a problem and after much searching in the uk fear I’ll have to cast my net further to solve it..!! I’ve a reasonably good condition 18 year old Forester , rebuilt and modified to an approx safe 350 bhp BUT my VF23 turbo has just expired so it now sounds like 2lb of nails in a tumble dryer..!! As the car is mapped to run that turbo it makes sense to replace it like for like but there doesn’t seem to be any in the uk.!! So chaps am casting my net over the pond to see if any of you guys have one out back sat doing nothing that you’d sell me..?? obviously needs to be in good working order and good for another 30/40 k miles.. If I’m in the wrong place please redirect me.!! Many thanks

There must be more than a few shops around you that can rebuild this thing, so why not go that direction instead? It'll save you a lot of time and headache down the road with warranteed work instead of buying at best a second hand unit that may possibly put you in the same predicament or worse.

That model offered particularly good low down pull and progressive power thro the range..didn’t run out of steam pulled happily off the clicks..

You could try this:

Works out to be 170 pounds, but shipping might make it expensive

Question newbie who needs help

First off let me say that this is a great thread with lots of good information and I appreciate the time it took to put together to help us all out.

About me. I am a total newbie who just got his first Subaru. I have a 2004 forester xt with a blown wrx turbo in it and I am looking for a replacement turbo. the car is stock for now so there is no mods or tuning done. My goal is to drive it this year as a daily driver and work out any/all kinks I find with it. once I have it running well and the suspension and brakes are setup I will being engine mods. The goal for this car is to be a fun car for the weekends with the family and camping and biking trips or car show/club meets.

My question is what is a good stock wrx turbo that I can put in to replace the current one? and where can I get a good deal on a new one?

thanks for all the help in advance.
