One more question, do you think it's safe to drive around with the up/down pipes installed for a week or two before getting tuned? I'd like to get a feel for how the up/down pipes change the car, and then also what difference the tune makes.
It's fine to drive it around with just the uppipe and downpipe for awhile.

I wrote this in response to someone else's question on the Cobb AP, and hopefully Unabomber can incorporate some of it into his FAQ:

What gauges/tools are important if I wish to tune my own vehicle? These are considered the "must have" tuning items:

a. Wideband O2 sensor/gauge
b. EGT gauge

Are both of these needed for N/A applications as well?

Thanks Una for another great writeup. This one, like all the others, was extremely helpful and informative.

Didn't hear anyone talk about the pitfalls of DIY ECU tuning. What are the dangers, if any, of an improper custom reflash? How much can you experiment without screwing up? Do they allow you to backup the original settings? Thanks for such a great sticky!

I plan to make my first mod a TBE for my 2005 STi. I'm still unsure of which brand I'd like to get, although I'm leaning towards the turboXS. Anyway, that's irrelevant. My question is, which form of EM would be best for me? I'm from southern california, namely OC, so there's a decent amount of tuners in my area. From what I read it seems as though a Custom Tuned ECU would be best for me. From my understanding a custom tuned ecu gives me the options of adding parts to the engine at my leisure and I can then take it to the local tuner to have them dyno tune my car for optimal performance. Is this correct? I don't plan to go all out on modifying my STi, but I will without a doubt have the urge to add bits and pieces here and there. Any help would be appreciated.

Will you see any significant power increases if you install EM on a stock WRX?

Great info! Thank you!

I have an '03 Baja N/A MT. I plan on doing very little mods to the engine. Down the road I may try for more torque, but nothing in the near future.

Has anyone had any experience with the Code Readers/simple EM systems? How about any that work through a PDA?

My goal is to read and clear CEL codes, verify emissions before paying to have them tested each year and maybe simple power gains without braking the bank.

Regarding reflashing the ECU...
Does the dealer ever update the ECU prog and thereby loose my data?
Don't plan on going to the dealer but just want to know.
Thanks

Default Newbie Question

Forgive this basic question!

This is my first Suby and have used the CarChip OBDII tool to monitor engine functions on other vehicles. The port location is usually under the steering wheel - but I cannot locate the port on my 2007 impreza 2.5i.

Again forgive me, but where does Subaru locate their ECM access port?
Thx, J
