The machine you see before you isnít a Jeep CJ from the Ď70s. Nor is it a Jeep CJ from the Ď80s. Despite its familiar shape, googly round eyes, and a front bumper sticking out like a spoilt childís bottom lip, not one cent of the cash outlaid by customer will line FCAís coffers.

Itís the Mahindra ROXOR Ė an off-roader from an Indian company, built in America, the Willys way. Got that?

Mahindra has been making noise for ages about entering the North American market, showing various small pickup trucks and other machinery before finally pulling the trigger in 2017, establishing a base of operations and signing up a team of powersports dealers.

The ROXOR is an off-road only machine featuring a growly 2.5-liter inline-four turbodiesel under its Jeepy hood. A grand total of 62 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of barely-off-idle torque is on tap to move its 3000+lb mass. Given the thing doesnít have any doors or roof, the ROXOR must be made of lead. It tops out at 45 mph.

Any machine which straddles the line between on-road Ďwheelers like the Jeep Wrangler and off-road busters like the Polaris RZR side-by-side deserves closer examination. The ROXOR neatly splits the difference in length between those two machines, measuring 148 inches in length compared to the Wranglerís 166.6-inch and the RZRís 119-inch shadows.

It is rated to tow 3,490 lbs, but only at 15 mph. A true five-speed manual complete with a spindly shifter poking through the transmission is the gearbox on offer, so operators can poke at a clutch pedal with their left foot, something not required in a traditional side-by-side from Polaris or Can-Am. Naturally, the ROXOR is four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case and nine inches of ground clearance.

Electric Blue and Fire Engine Red are the two extroverted colors, while Wimbledon White and Inky Black take care of the greyscale. None of the four add a penny to the ROXORís $14,999 base price for the Classic trim shown here. Mahindra will sell you a winch and front bumper for the princely sum of $1500; save your cash and buy your own unit after the fact for less.

Other accessories are available on the Classic trim, such as a light bar like the ones found on brodozers and grab handles for passengers. The twin halogen peepers up front will illuminate your path just fine. As for your passengers, well, if they fall out thatís their own fault. Interior trappings are decidedly Spartan, with a single gauge peeping back at the driver and a couple of seat boxes for storage. An LE trim adds $3,250 and some of these accessories but doesnít make the ROXOR any more capable off-road.

The ROXOR is a great blend of old school simplicity and current technology. Nine-inch disc brakes up front mean the thing will actually stop when you ask it to, unlike early CJs whose front drums were not so much brakes as they were Ďhesitatorsí or Ďdelayersí. Despite these upgrades, the rest of the unit looks as if it can be fixed with a stout hammer.

For a single George Washington under $15,000, the ROXOR is priced right in the thick of its powersports competition. Given its unique properties, a more car-like style of operation than a traditional side-by-side, and undeniable cool factor, the base ROXOR earns its spot on our Ace of Base list.

Just remember: itís not a Jeep Ö even if some early CJ parts do fit. Donít forget to stay off-road.

Default FCA Wants To Block Mahindra From Selling Jeep Lookalike In U.S.

The Roxor definitely looks a whole lot like a Jeep CJ.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is challenging Mahindra's ability to sell Roxor in the United States due to the tiny off-roader close resemblance to the Jeep Wrangler. FCA filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission that could prevent Mahindra's vehicle from entering the market. The grievance specifically cited the Roxor's "boxy body shape with flat-appearing vertical sides and rear body ending at about the same height as the hood" among the many similarities, according to Automotive News.

Mahindra debuted the Roxor in March but hasn't yet but the little vehicle on sale because the business has been building a dealer body. According to Automotive News, Mahindra intends to manufacture all of the components for them in India and ship them to the U.S. to be assembled as kits at the company's new factory in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

In its filing, FCA cited the Indian company's "substantial foreign manufacturing capacity combined with its demonstrated intention to penetrate the United States market and harm FCA's goodwill and business," according to Automotive News.

The Roxor certainly looks a whole lot like an old CJ Jeep, but a key differentiation is that the Mahindra is not street legal. Instead, the Roxor competes in the side-by-side segment against vehicles from companies like Polaris and Yamaha. It comes with a 2.5-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder producing 62 horsepower (46 kilowatts) with 144 pound-feet (195 Newton-meters) of torque. A five-speed manual and low-range transfer case channels the power to the ground. This setup only allows for a top speed of 45 miles per hour (72 kilometers per hour). It also uses a leaf-spring suspension and has solid axles at the front and rear. Despite the simple appearance, the Roxor still weighs a hefty 3,000 pounds (1,361 kilograms).

Mahindra actually holds a license to build CJ-inspired vehicles and still sells them in India as the Thar. However, it's unlikely this agreement applies outside of the Indian market, which might be trouble for the Roxor, depending on the Trade Commission's decision.

Sounds an awful lot like the CJ3A its copying, which had 60hp and a gross weight of just under 3500lbs.

Boomers would buy this in place of a RZR.

Honest question: who are these offroaders aimed at? Is it because there are some hunting/fishing/etc places you can't legally drive a normal vehicle?

I want to believe that they made this thing out of 1/2" square wall tubing for a ladder frame. At that weight, it may well be damned near indestructible. I will take mine in olive green white star on the side. Oh an a gun rack.

Well, these do actually exist. I just saw a flat bed with 3 of them heading the other way on my drive to work this morning. Apparently Mahindra has an office of some sort in the metro Detroit area. I suspect they are heading to one of the local ORV parks for the day.

News Judge Rules Mahindra Roxor Infringes On Jeep, Fiat Chrysler Will Seek Stop-Sale


The Detriot-built not for street use side-by-side called the Mahindra Roxor is a favorite around here because it delivers on the promise of an old-school back to basics off-road experience. It does that by cribbing most of itself from a Willys Civilian Jeep, though none of the Roxor’s dimensions are exactly Willys, and none of the parts are carry overs.

It’s that visual similarity that rubs Fiat Chrysler the wrong way, and has caused the company to pursue a lawsuit for the last two years claiming the Roxor infringes on FCA’s distinctive Jeep vehicle trade dress. And by trade dress, they mean visual cues that make people identify a Jeep as a Jeep.

Namely:
  • A boxy body shape with flat appearing vertical side and rear body panels ending at about the same height as the hood;
  • Substantially flat hood with curved side edges that tapers to be narrower at the front;
  • Trapezoidal front wheel wells with front fenders or fender flares that extend beyond the front of the grille;
  • Flat appearing grille with vertical elongated grille slots and a trapezoidal outline that curves around round headlamps positioned on the upper part of the grille;
  • Exterior hood latches;
  • Door cutouts above a bottom portion of the side body panels??

U.S. International Trade Commission Administrative Law Judge Cameron Elliot has sided with FCA on this issue, agreeing that the Roxor infringes upon those trade dress issues, according to a report from Carscoops. Upon ruling, the judge recommended the USITC grant FCA’s order to exclude the infringing vehicles and components from entry into the U.S. Further, he recommended a cease-and-desist order be granted preventing Mahindra from selling any more Roxors, including already-built models in dealer showrooms.

When deposed, Mahindra Automotive North America CEO and President Rick Haas agreed that the Roxor “has the appearance of a CJ”. Admitting that “The CJ is a Jeep brand vehicle.” Welp, case closed, then.

The USITCA still needs to confirm Judge Elliot’s findings with a 60-day review period. FCA says it believes both orders will be confirmed by March 13th, 2020, once the review period has ended.

To make matters worse for Mahindra, Fiat Chrysler is bringing a separate infringement case against the Roxor in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Michigan. The trial, slated to begin in May of 2020, pits FCA against the Indian automaker again, this time “seeking an injunction to prohibit future sales of infringing vehicles, as well as disgorgement of Mahindra’s profits from the infringing Roxor.”

Yikes.

The Mahindra is wholesome and good off-road fun. This ruling is dumb and bad. That’s my take.

I guess I donít understand the Roxor. It looks like a Jeep, itís heavy, itís expensive, has an underpowered diesel and isnít street legal. Iíd have to have a car trailer and a bigger truck to haul this to some place legal to drive it. Why not get a decent side by side/utv?

Higher payload than a UTV, maybe? For oneís giant ranch, driving around and fixing fence?

Does seem pretty niche.
