Hello NASIOC!

My name is Michael; some of you may know me from YouTube, local events, or the Porsche/Volvo/F150/Outback forums.

My wife and I are both into track days, autocross, hill climb, rallycross, and just enjoying the local mountain roads. Some of our current and past builds include...

2008 Volvo C30, manual, turbo, and the 7th (legal) AWD conversion in the world. 272whp and 345ftlbs at the wheels.

2006 Volvo V50, manual, turbo, AWD. Stage3 tuned.

2008 Porsche 987S

Other cars and full build sheets can be seen here: https://www.michaelchallock.com/

I'm pleased to introduce my wife's new-to-her 2016 WRX, which we have appropriately named the Black Pearl. It's a Base model, just like I wanted, but the previous owner kindly retrofitted the factory fog lights. We've set aside a small budget for her to modify it however she wants cosmetically and performance wise. The V50 above was entirely her build, so I'm excited to see what she does with this one.

First order of business has been to upgrade all the front facing lights to LEDs. Tested the H8 LED fog light kit from my 987 in the Subie's low beams. Light output is significantly better than the stock halogen bulbs and the cutoff is surprisingly sharp even with the stock projectors. I'm just pleased to find that these cars don't have PWM lights (or they're at least not throwing any codes for me).

We disabled the DRLs by modifying the relay, just like I had done on my Outback. DRLs aren't a legal requirement here and I don't like the way the high beams glow.

Ordered another LED kit for the fog lights.
Swapped the license plate bulbs and the front running lights to LEDs.
Swapped the interior dome light to an LED.

The steering wheel has a dent in the leather, so I ordered a new perforated skin.

I also did some research on the parts currently installed on this car, as it's not stock.
  • Perrin Master Cylinder Support
  • Perrin Lightweight Crank Pulley
  • Perrin Pulley Cover
  • Cobb Big SF Intake System
  • Invidia J Pipe
  • Invidia Racing Catback
  • Stage2+ Protune

My C30 was dyno'd at 272whp and current weighs around 3000lbs. 0-60 is consistently at 5 seconds, occasionally sub-5 once the tires are warm. This WRX can pull about 1 car length on the C30 by the top of 2nd gear, so I'm pleased with where it currently is power-wise. No plans to add anything else in the performance category and since I already have two cars with track setup coilovers, we'll be leaving the suspension stock until it needs to be replaced.

My wife filled up her shopping cart with the aero parts and vinyl, so the plan is to "finish" this family-car build by the end of the year and then enjoy it for many years to come.

My wife has started a new video series for her car. It's her first attempt at creating content for YouTube, so be sure to "like" and leave positive comments!

My wife has been busy with modifying her new toy!

Perforated steering wheel skin with red stitching.

Blacked out the chrome in the headlights and installed a WRX grille badge.

That looks great! The leather on my wheel is falling apart. Where’d you get it?

It's a polyurethane leather skin that was $25 on ebay.

I figured if the made-in-China fitment was poor or if the quality doesn't withstand the test of time, it was only $25 and I can later cash out for a Redline Goods product.

But the fitment turned out to be perfect. The kit includes everything you need for installation and enough thread to stitch it together twice. You don't need to know how to sew to install this, you just need to know how to thread a needle and loop it underneath the preexisting stitches. Total install time took about an hour.

It goes over the stock leather wheel, so it's easily removable (if you don't use the tape) and it gives to overall wheel a slightly thicker grip.

We'll see how well it holds up to use, but I'm pleased so far.
They also offer different thread color options, different materials, and an optional center line.

I really like that red stitching on the steering wheel, is that custom or is it a premade wheel?

Premade skin, they have a variety of material and color options available. Fitment was perfect, but we'll see how well it withstands time and use.
