Default 2020 Golf R

Quote:
W Golf R mega hatch shapes up with new look and potent 4WD drivetrain, and our exclusive images preview its extreme styling

This is our first look at the all-new VW Golf R spotted the hot hatch undergoing testing in South Africa.

Even in this single image, there are several clues that this is more focussed than any previous new Golf seen so far. First, the wheels, whose design looks very like the optional 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ wheels used on the previous-generation Golf R. Those wheels fill the arches neatly - hinting that the ride height has dropped subtly relative to the standard Golf.

The front bumper is very similar in design to the already-released Golf GTE plug-in hybrid, but a large intercooler is poking out from behind the grille panel. Unlike the GTE, the grille element isn’t illuminated, but finished in silver.

Specs of the next Golf R have yet to be confirmed, but Volkswagen bosses have already confirmed that the fastest iterations of the Mk8 Golf will have in excess of 300bhp. As before, drive is set to be deployed through VW’S 4MOTION four-wheel drive system.

For this iteration of the Golf R, it’s expected that a mild hybrid system will help deliver extra performance. Unlike lesser versions of the new Golf, which provide a small electrical boost to reduce load on the combustion engine, it’s likely that the next R’s hybrid assistance will come in the form of an electrical compressor. Similar in principle to the system used by the Audi S6, this should help to all but eliminate turbo lag.

The image was sent via Twitter user Caleb J SchroŽter, who confirmed that the photo was snapped in Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth. The location is close to Volkswagen’s South African factory.

Not feeling the new headlight design. Looks like they just flipped them upside down. Kinda looks droopy.

I think it looks pretty cool for a Golf. Itís not like theyíve ever been lookers - they look like grandma and secretary cars.

Starting to lose the hot hatch shape, which is not a plus IMO.

Doesn't matter to me, the R is already too expensive at $42k.

They really need some SIROCCO style for that ugly old box. I might buy one iif it has some style. There is also a 400HP version running around but more likely mule for Audi RS3 that imho is grossly overpriced.

Meh. Nothing to really say. It's a mk8 with a hacked up bumper and a fmic. Could be an R. Or not. They don't make the R in the South Africa plant, so...

I don't like the design on the mk8.

Put a 5-pot in it and call it a day. Unfortunately, they'll prolly put just retune the EA888.

The boxy style defines the Golf. It’s never going to change nor should they as the utility of the square hatch is what separates the car from a lot of other hatchbacks that prioritize style over utility with sloping hatches.

No, they won't put Audi's 5-pot in there.

They've pretty much ruled out putting together anything overly hot, because it gets too expensive. The R is already pretty damn expensive now that the driver assist package is standard. But if they dropped the 5-pot in there, it'd be a $50K+ golf... and I think they recognize that it's just stupid to have a VW cost that much, that's why Audi exists.

It'll be another EA888. Maybe they'll push the power a little higher to 320 or something, but I think that's it.

I'm more excited about the rumors of an ID.3 R that's due by 2024 - just as my 6 year warranty on my R runs out (https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/m...ce-id-3-r-2024)

wonder golf r plus they claim of 400hp possibility is just 400hp golf r and nothing more. if there are no suspension/handling improvement, people may just buy regular golf r and drop 2k-3k and tuned to 400hp.

https://carbuzz.com/news/vw-discover...-400-hp-golf-r

there will not be a 400 hp golf R. It was a cool design concept, but won't sell. Even if they made it, absolutely no way it would come to the US. It'd be like the GTI TCR (about $45k fwd gti) - unobtanium.

It also seems like it wont be hybrid - unlike what all of these "rumors" sites keep reporting. It's interesting. you get to throw **** at a wall and see what sticks. But it's okay, because we call it a "rumor". Not just these click-bait sites doing it either, goes all the way to the (edited for P&P content).

I know, it's wishful thinking. I'm with you and they will push the EA888 up to about 320ish. I'm stage 2 tuned and pushing about 400 crank. It's more than enough car. The audi 5-pot would make that car a rocketship!....especially after it was tuned.!
