2011 impreza WRX wiring gremlins
Okay, so last week i drove to work, and everything in my car was working as it should. whenever I left, I heard a click and my ac control panel was not working. when i got back home i checked fuses and the 15a fuse 22 was blown in the fuse panel under the dash. i replaced it. and it worked for the rest of that day. the next day i drove maybe 30 minutes and the fuse blew again, i tried replacing it, and this time the fuse starting blowing immediately. But what was weird, when the fuse would not blow immediately the wipers would start going at low speed, with the ignition in the off position. Then i was driving the car a few nights later and noticed that my brights were not working. i immediately stopped and checked my running lights and they were not working either.. so when i got home i checked fuses and the LIGHTING 15a fuse in the engine compartment fuse panel was blown. i tried replacing this fuse and it would blow immediately. but when the fuse would not blow. the wipers would start going at low speed with the ignition in the off position. even with all of the wiper fuses removed. Then the last time i drove the car the fuel pump stopped working, and the fuel pump fuse is not blown.
Can somebody please lead me in some sort of direction here, im stumped. i cant find any good schematics online. Im thinking maybe i have a bad ground somewhere. i also thought that maybe there was an issue with the BIU but with it unplugged i am having the same problems... Thanks in Advance..

It sounds to me like there is damage to a wiring harness somewhere, as that's the most likely way for those unrelated circuits to interact like that. It also sounds like the fault is dynamic, or changing, and the time to blow for the fuses changes. This could be a sign of the damaged part of the wiring harness moving and changing the impedance of the fault. It could be somehting physically cut/crimped/squeezed/whatever to a wiring harness, or it could be water infultration and corrosion. Looks for places that could collect water if gaskets were leaking, areas that show signs of water damage or buildup, places with wires close to moving parts or pinch points, etc.

Did you find the CAUSE of the melted wires? The melted wires could be either the cause, or the result of your problem.
If you find a nearby heat source, that could be your root cause, then fix the heat source, fix the wires, and you're done. Alternatively, you mentioned fuses blowing, which is due to over current, which overheats wires, so it's also possible that the melted wires are just a side result of some other root cause. Of course you need to fix the melted wires, but I don't want you to go through that effort just to have them melt again if there is some other root cause going on. |
