Default North Carolina Police Spotted Measuring Cars For The Infamous Carolina Squat

North Carolina Police Spotted Measuring Cars For The Infamous Carolina Squat

Quote:

In order to curb the spread of the infamous “Carolina Squat”, North Carolina recently enacted a bill that forbids owners from doing it to their vehicle. Now, state police has been spotted actively measuring vehicles to check for illegal amounts of squat, with a series of photos shared to Facebook showing a North Carolina police officer taking a tape measure to a squatted Toyota 4Runner.
For those unfamiliar, the Carolina Squat refers to an unusual modification in which owners will modify their suspension so the front of their vehicle, typically a truck or SUV, rides significantly higher than the rear. The trend is often accompanied by grossly oversized wheels, resulting in a very distinctive (albeit unattractive) look.

Read More: Is There Any Data Behind North Carolina’s Proposal To Ban Squatted Trucks?

More important than looks, though, is the concern of safety. First off, with such a heavily canted vehicle, the handling is borderline ruined, reducing the likelihood of successful evasive maneuvers in emergency situations. Additionally, pointing the front of the vehicle so high up significantly reduces visibility, which could lead to accidents if the driver can’t see the cars in front of them. And finally, if an accident does occur, whatever the squatted vehicle hits will get wedged underneath it instead of striking the front or rolling off the top.

According to North Carolina’s new bill, the front of any vehicle can be no higher than four inches above the rear. More specifically, an offense will be incurred “if the suspension, frame, or chassis, the height of the front fender is 4 or more inches greater than the height of the rear fender.” And they’re not messing around with this rule, either. Drivers found with an illegal amount of squat on their vehicle run the risk of losing their license for a year.

In the case of this 4Runner, though, just by looking of it, we’d say the measuring was more of a formality than anything else.

When I was out in NC this past spring, I saw my first NC squat SUV. Can't remember if it was a Tahoe or suburban but I thought it was just some lifted white trash vehicle with blown rear suspension. I was then informed of the NC squat.

I don't get it. The rear was so low compared to the front that if you were sitting flat back against the seat, you'd be looking up at the sky.

Hell, I'd just say the vehicle is unsafe to operate, danger to others and impound that ****.

It's not even aftermarket things. In my evo, which is stock height and basically the same height as any other sedan, new 150s and chevys ****ing blind me with their huge and high front ends with their LED lights. I don't understand how they pass safety regs.

We don't have safety regs for lights. We have a set of loose DOT rules that prevent newer safer lighting technologies from being sold here, and what is sold here is self-regulated by the manufacturers.

With a good set of airbags, you can do whatever you want.
Inflate the front bags and deflate the rear bags. Squat.
LEO pulls you over? Level out all the bags. No squat. What then?

or (hear me out), you leave the car level when driving, and then when you get to your hard parking event where it'll be cool looking, you go squat style.

at the end of the day, people who think driving like this on public roads is cool are also the people who are entirely stupid enough to not make the modifications correctly and will just cut/weld things.

first it was 20" wheel
Then it was 22" wheels
Then it was 24" wheels
Then it was 30" wheels
LED valve stem caps were briefly in...
somewhere in between 20 and 24" spnnnaz became the 'in' thing for the attention whore crowd.
Then the Donk craze caught light
Then Hellafrush lingered too long, far too long
Trucks with 10" Deep crock pot wheels are all the rage now to the dismay of wheel bearings everywhere
This is just another notch for the the low IQ crowd who think wheels are the only thing that needs to be modified to be 'noticed' in their desperate attempt to be unique.

What wheel fad am I missing.

OR, they could just issue a patch and ensure it does not happen.
It has not happened for the previous 20 years I have been here.
