Another generic looking hatch that could be made by any one of a dozen manufacturers.

Hopefully they actually put a usable back seat in it this time.

Looks perfectly normal.

The Focus (and most modern FWD cars) look like they're sporting shorter front overhangs than they actually have, because the bumpers have a deep radius at the corners. Up close the front seems to look really short.. from a distance, the true length appears.

Near (and slightly from the rear):

Far (and straight on):

Default Many Details Emerge About New Ford Focus, Including Hybrid RS

Quote:
Many Details Emerge About New Ford Focus, Including Hybrid RS
Anthony Karr
As we have already reported, Ford won’t bring the new Focus to Geneva for a world debut and will instead hold a standalone event in April. We still don’t know the exact date of the premiere, but the Dutch site AutoInternationaal has disclosed some important details about the next generation model.

Our colleagues from the Lowlands claim the vehicle will be about 50 mm longer than the outgoing variant, which will have a positive impact mainly on the legroom for the rear passengers. On average, the new Focus will be roughly 110 pounds (50 kilograms) lighter, but depending on the version this number may vary.

Just like the new Fiesta, the button-busy dashboard of today's Focus will be replaced by a tablet-dominated layout. Most of the car’s infotainment functions will be controlled through this touchscreen display.

But what’s probably the most intriguing piece of unofficial information, the online publication says the future next generation Focus RS would use a hybridized powertrain. The Blue oval company is developing a 48-volt electric system to keep up with the rapidly-progressing rivals, which will be combined with an integrated starter-generator. This setup should provide no less than 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) and a peak torque in the region of almost 442 pound-feet (600 Newton-meters).

Purists will be happy to hear Ford will continue to offer the car with a six-speed automatic gearbox. If you want a more user-friendly transmission, the engineers of the company are also working on a dual-clutch automatic.

If the claimed acceleration numbers turn out to be correct, the new Focus RS will be a truly impressive hot hatch. AutoInternationaal says the 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) acceleration should take 4.0 seconds, making the hatch slightly faster than the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Audi RS3 Sportback.

But long before the Focus RS arrives, Ford is expected to introduce the Focus ST, which is rumored to debut in Paris this autumn. Even before that, the sportiest Focus of the range will be the Focus ST-Line, which should be available to customers from day one.

Hybride techniek voor Ford Focus RS
21 februari 2018

Default Next Ford Focus RS could be 400-hp hybrid

Quote:
The current Ford Focus RS is preparing to depart the production line on April 6, but Ford has plans for another RS-badged Focus, and it might even be a hybrid.

That's the rumor from Dutch publication Auto International, which reported last week that the next-generation Focus RS will sport a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to boost power. The claimed figure is a nice, round 400 horsepower.

Right now, Ford's hottest of hot hatches makes 350 hp, though a final Focus RS Heritage Edition does bump that rating up to 370 hp with a Mountune performance kit. The report alleged that the 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine will soldier on, but the hybrid system's bigger starter motor will augment the powertrain. An additional 44 pound-feet of torque is reportedly in the cards, too, bringing the total to 394 lb-ft.

Although just a rumor, the strategy seems to have some credentials. Ford will get serious about electrification in the coming years and even teased a future battery-electric performance crossover that could wear the "Mach 1" name. We also know a Mustang hybrid is coming, as is an F-150 hybrid.

Executive Vice President and President for Global Markets Jim Farley said in January that Ford will offer seven fully electric cars in North America by 2022.

Don't expect a new Focus RS until deep into the next-generation Focus' lifecycle, but do look for the next-generation hatchback to bow at the 2018 Geneva motor show next week. We may see the Focus sedan show face at the 2018 New York auto show later this month as well.

Default 2020 Ford Focus RS to have 400bhp, 425lb ft mild hybrid powertrain Electrification

Quote:
2020 Ford Focus RS to have 400bhp, 425lb ft mild hybrid powertrain
Electrification will make the 2020 Focus RS punch harder and emit less pollution; it'll rival future AMG and Audi Sport mega-hatches for pace

Ford is planning an even faster, more powerful and more efficient Focus RS for 2020 and will use the new mega-hatch to showcase a suite of 48V mild-hybrid technologies the company is introducing across its global medium and large-car ranges.

With the combination of its combustion and electric motors, the car’s power output is expected to exceed 400bhp, rivalling next-generation offerings from Mercedes-AMG and Audi.

While improving the RS’s already impressive acceleration times and driving characteristics, the model’s new technology should dramatically cut both CO2 and toxic emissions to meet rapidly tightening world demands. European regulations require car makers to meet a 95g/km CO2 fleet average by 2021. The outgoing Focus RS emits 175g/km.

Next Ford Focus to be revealed next week with 'class leading dynamics'

The new RS, based on the next-generation standard Focus (pictured below) that's due for reveal next week, is part of a 40-model Ford electrification offensive announced at the Detroit motor show earlier this year. At the show, the company announced a doubling of its spending commitment to £8.7 billion by 2022 and said it would spend the money both on new electric-only models and platforms (such as the Mustang-based Mach 1) and on updating many of its existing models to 48V hybrids from 2019.

Ford’s president of global markets, Jim Farley, is also one of the main architects of the Ford Performance division the firm now regards as a major asset. He revealed a new Ford plan to enhance the credibility of future electrification technologies by applying them first to its most iconic models, such as the Focus RS.

Ford of Britain chairman and CEO Andy Barratt reiterated the importance of the RS brand when he launched a Heritage Edition version of the fast Focus, marking the 50th anniversary of the appearance of RS on an Escort, the Focus’s predecessor.

Ford Performance's switch to hybrid should be celebrated

“The RS brand is hugely important to Ford and is recognised across the globe,” he said. “It has a special place in the hearts of UK Ford fans. This latest RS is the best we’ve ever produced.”

The next Focus RS is tipped to use the outgoing model’s 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. This motor now produces 370bhp and 376lb ft following a recent round of Mountune upgrades, thanks to a high-flow induction kit, an uprated turbocharger recirculating valve and calibration changes.

Ford has a history of adopting ‘tweaks’ devised by the iconic Mountune tuning company for later production models.

The new Focus RS engine’s output of 370bhp is likely to be augmented by a contribution of 25-30bhp – and, more important, around 60-70lb ft of start-up torque – from a 48V integrated starter/generator (ISG).

The system's effortless restarting will save fuel and reduce CO2 by allowing longer engine-off periods, will more efficiently collect regenerated energy from braking and will sharpen the car’s low-speed accelerator response by contributing extra torque from standstill. This will both improve acceleration times and allow the engine to operate more often in its most efficient power bands, a means of reducing emissions, especially NOx.

The total combined power and torque – an estimated 400bhp and 425lb ft – should allow the forthcoming Focus RS to match and possibly beat the new wave of top-end hot hatches from Germany.

It should also enable Ford to cut the Focus RS’s 0-60mph time from today’s 4.6sec to the 4.2sec of the class-leading Mercedes-AMG A45.

Even more important than outright pace in a difficult era for high-performance cars are the impressive cuts in exhaust pollutants offered by the new ISG set-up. It’s unlikely that the new Focus RS will use an electrically driven turbocharger – as recently showcased by Audi – although Ford is known to have been experimenting with these for at least four years. Recent estimates suggest that an ISG-equipped next-generation Focus RS should return cuts of 20-30g/km in its CO2 output, a vital contribution to reducing the fleet average.

All Focus RS editions (including the Mk2 and Mk1, pictured above) so far have had six-speed manual gearboxes, but the fourth-generation version could offer a dual-clutch automatic option. This would take advantage of the ISG’s ability to provide ‘torque pulses’ to smooth gearchanges. The availability of a self-shifter could also strengthen much needed demand for the car in automatic-crazy China and US markets. In the US, especially, the car is seen as costly for its size.

Ford also has multi-speed automatic transmissions available, but they’re unlikely to be used because they’re heavier, bulkier and more difficult to package in a car such as the Focus RS. Even the extra space required to house a shoe-box-sized 48V battery (probably under the rear seat) is likely to have been hard-won: the new Focus sits on a modified version of the outgoing Focus C2 platform with a 50mm-longer wheelbase and a slightly increased 4.4m body length.

As with the current model, the next Focus RS will be a five-door hatchback. Three-door hatches are nowadays seen as unnecessarily costly because they sell poorly in cheaper guises.

Family-oriented versions of the next Focus are tipped to be around 50kg lighter, model for model, but the RS’s extra battery and electric hardware are likely to eat up the difference. Acceleration (and circuit lap times) should nevertheless benefit from the car’s better power-to-weight ratio and especially its quicker low-speed responses.

The new Focus RS’s hardware similarity to its predecessor (above) makes it almost certain that next-generation production will resume at the Saarlouis plant in Germany, where the current car has been made.

The new Focus RS's cabin will follow suit of the regular car with new trim lines that're being redesigned along new Fiesta lines, simplifying the control layout, increase interior space and improve visibility. There has also been special attention paid to quality enhancements across the Focus range. Ford is majoring on further improvements to switchgear and materials, and a better integrated central touchscreen.

Although Ford continues to regard an affordable RS as vital to its everyman self-image, the next generation of the fastest Focus is almost certain to take a price hike to help pay for its more sophisticated electrical hardware. Ford has already taken half a step towards indicating this by pricing its outgoing Heritage Edition at £39,895, around £3000 above the standard RS range-topper. By the time it reaches launch, the 48V car is likely to hit the early £40,000s, at which level it will still undercut German rivals and look decent value given the new-found ‘green’ power and performance.

Ford Focus RS driven at Spa-Francorchamps

***65532;UNIQUE ROLE OF THE FOCUS RS:

Until you revisit Focus history, you tend to forget how single-mindedly Ford has used its RS model to stimulate second-half sales in a model’s life. Since the first Focus made its debut 20 years ago, three separate RS models have been offered for only about half the time...

Focus RS Mk1 (2002-2004)

Original two-wheel-drive model well known for its flared wheel arches and its effective but infamous Quaife mechanical limited-slip diff. Didn’t appear until the Focus had been on sale for four years. Fast, with excellent Brembo brakes, but quirky about traction keeping and needed firm handling to give of its best.

Focus RS Mk2 (2009-2011)

Bigger and heavier than the Mk1 so more benign and stable with more sophisticated chassis electronics. Extra poke from an ex-Volvo five-pot 2.5-litre turbo engine and again well respected for sheer speed across the ground. Introduced only after Ford launched its ‘kinetic design’ mid-life models, so once again quite short-lived.

Focus RS Mk3 (2014-2018)

Longest-lasting of the Focus RS models and the most technically advanced, with sophisticated four-wheel drive and much-ballyhooed Drift mode. Serious poke (345bhp) from ex-Mustang 2.3-litre Ecoboost four-pot engine. Last version, called Heritage Edition, yields 370bhp with Mountune engine tweaks. Reverts to a Quaife front diff.

So Ford says not to expect a new RS until deep into the life-cycle of this new generation, and all the rumors are now that it's coming in 2020 . Ford hasn't even decided on what they want the new RS to be. No requirements have been shared with suppliers such that designs and parts can be quoted. For a new RS to launch in 2020 it would need to be nearly complete right now. Nothing exists yet.

My guess is 2022 for a mostly carry-over concept into a new vehicle / chassis. More likely 2024 if it's actually going to be a hybrid as they'll need sufficient time to figure out where and how to package the extra hardware, and then sort out additional cooling requirements.

Ya, but they need to get the hype machine rolling now or else how will the dealers be able to get all that ADM at launch?

Really wish there was a like button.

Glad Ford is doing it but I think my hot hatch ship has sailed, same with muscle cars, I'm just getting too old for them and they don't really pair with Brooks Brothers and Allen Edmonds which is more my style now. CPO Volvo V60/V90 is more likely.

I hope they step up their interior game, they have done a great job with Lincoln in the past year I'd like to see an interior renaissance in the mainstream or just copy Mazda.

Default Let’s address rumors about the next-gen Ford Focus RS

Let’s address rumors about the next-gen Ford Focus RS

Production of the Ford Focus RS is scheduled to end exactly on April 6, but there might not be a long wait for the next one to get on the production line. According to our sources from Autocar, Ford’s hottest hatchback might actually arrive as early as 2020. This also brings back rumours that the new RS could get a hybrid powertrain.

If reports are accurate, the 2020 Ford Focus RS will keep the 2.3 liter turbocharged four cylinder. It might also get additional tuning which might slightly boost its output. Another improvement will come from a mild hybrid setup consisting of a 48-volt electrical system and integrated started generator. Overall, the system will be able to offer as much as 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) and 425 pound feet (576 Newton metres) of torque. It will only be available with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox though.

Autocar suggests that the hybrid system could bring other driving advantages to the Ford Focus. To be more specific, engineers might tweak the tech to contribute a boost of power when gears are changing, so that there would never be a lull in torque delivery. The integrated starter generator could also add a little bit of power from a launch.

I hope this supposed dual-clutch trans is better than the catastrophic failure they put in the Fiesta.

News The all-new platform has allowed Ford's engineers to slash up to 88 kilograms (194 po

Car sales are suffering under the weight of crossovers, but that doesn’t mean automakers are giving up just yet. Ford’s compact offering, the Focus, is all-new for 2019, and loaded with technology. A new design inside and out, along with improved interior materials will certainly usher new buyers into the segment. Ford unveiled the new Focus in Germany for the European market, with the U.S. expected to get the model imported from China from the second half of 2019.

The Focus will ride on Ford’s new C2 platform, which improves interior space, crash performance, and aerodynamics for better fuel economy. The wheelbase grows by two inches (53 millimeters) helping to increase cabin space while shortening front and rear overhangs. Torsional rigidity is improved by 20 percent over the previous-gen Focus. The new Focus even takes cues from the RS, using the same extruded foam in the rear underbody cavity.

More than just a pretty face, the Focus’ sleeker body was thoroughly optimized to improve aerodynamics and Ford has managed to lower the drag coefficient to 0.250 for the sedan and 0.273 for the hatchback. These are best-in-class figures, which corroborated with a weight loss of up to 194 pounds (88 kilograms), have helped slash fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 10 percent.

Ford piles on the technology with adaptive cruise control with stop and go, speed sign recognition, and lane centering that helps vehicles maintain a comfortable driving distance from the vehicles ahead. The Focus also receives improved lighting with Ford’s adaptive front lighting system with predictive curve light and sigh-based lighting. The system allows for the lights to pre-adjust before reaching a curve, junction, or roundabout. Instead of solely relying on a driver’s steering inputs, the system uses a forward-facing camera to monitor lane markings up to 214 feet (65 meters) ahead of the car.

Other technological goodies include a head-up display, improved active park assist that allows the driver to push a button and complete a parallel parking move before engaging park, park-out assist, and pre-collision pedestrian and cyclist detection. There’s blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, rearview camera, post-crash braking assit, wrong way alert, and evasive steering assist, which provides steering support to help drivers maneuver around a vehicle if a crash is possible.

FordPass Connect allows owners to perform a variety of vehicle functions right from their smartphone, such as locating the vehicle, check vehicle status including oil life, fuel levels, and more, lock and unlock doors, and initiate remote start for automatic-equipped Focus vehicles.

Inside, there’s wireless charging, and an eight-inch color touchscreen for the infotainment system. The Focus uses Ford’s Sync 3 system that is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Voice commands are available for a variety of functions that include audio control, climate functions, and navigation. There’s an available B&O Play sound system featuring a 675-watt, 10-speaker sound system with a subwoofer.

In Europe, the Focus will have two gasoline engines choices that provide several different power outputs. There is a 1.0-liter EcoBoost making 84 horsepower, 99 hp and 123 hp, and a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine making 148 hp and 180 hp. A six-speed manual or a new eight-speed automatic are the only two transmission choices available. The bigger unit has cylinder deactivation tech and it will turn off one of the cylinders in 14 milliseconds or 20 times quicker than the blink of an eye.

On the diesel side, there are new EcoBlue units with 1.5- and 2.0-liter displacements. The former will be offered in two states of tune: 94 hp and 118 hp, with both delivering 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of torque. Go for the bigger diesel and Ford will reward you with 148 hp and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm). For the first time ever in a diesel-powered model from the Blue Oval, the 2.0-liter mill uses steel pistons.

While Europe will receive the Focus sedan, wagon, and hatch, along with Focus Active crossover and upscale Focus Vignale, the U.S. market will receive the sedan and hatch along with future iterations of the ST and RS.
