Question yet ANOTHER (not so) stupid WRX question.... for all you WRXjunkies out there

Ok, this is my first time on this board... so give me some slack. I know this has probably been asked a gamillion times or so, but i'd like to know anyway.

Does the US-spec WRX have the same engine as the japanese WRX? If so... will we be able to simply "plug" the japanese bad-boy computer into the US car and magically get 280hp? Im sure it doesnt work that way... but hey, I can dream cant I?

peace,
shawn

Welcome round headlight lover

It is all speculation at to which engine we will get. The UK/Aussie's got the standard non-variable timing 2.0 with 218hp.
The current rumor is North America will get a ~230hp model, whether that means ours has the VT or not is unknown. My bet is the same 218hp everyone else got.

I'd say the possiblity of a chip to add HP is there, but by looking at the UK/Aus path to HP, other steps should be taken first. Figure a good $1500 in engine stuff will get you approaching the 270hp mark.

Hope this helps a little,
Shane Kullman

Hey Peaty, where are you?

Peaty has a friend who writes articles for Mags and drove the new Impreza down in Florida. He got to read the book that had all the specs on it. He said it was going to be 227hp at about 217ft/lbs.
Peaty, you there. What else did he till you.

The Japanese engine gets variable valve timing. We don't. Something about emissions.

BPM says that the new WRX cannot be chipped. I don't know why.

actually i heard a rumor that the they managed to pass the AVCS through emissions and that is why we're getting more hp than the euro spec cars. i have noe clue if its true or not. can anyone tell if it has AVCS by looking at the pictures of the U.S. spec engines compartment.

I doubt it, the AVCS is an internal camshaft type of system. I doubt you could tell the difference from the outside. Especially with the H4 engine that puts the heads on the side of the engine compartment.

You can't "chip" the new computer. Go here----> http://www.geocities.com/clintsc9/Im...mpreza2001.htm

and read about the new car.

Some interesting things I noticed in the brochure. Is this the same type of turbo as the EVO? (prob. not but just checking)
Is the new intake system really worth it for the turbo, wouldnt a short pipe be better?

I dont see anything that says anything about changing the ECU. Prodrive is coming out with an ECU for the PPP so why couldnt other tuners do the same?

You can tell if it has the VVT, there is a big bulge in the cam belt covers where the top cam shaff sproke is. If it did not. It would the same as the bottom half of the cover like the older version of the 2.0L
Here is what it would look like if it had it.

According to those specs, the max turbine speed is 190,000 RPM, and the max sustained boost pressure is 13.5 PSI @ 4800 RPM.

Cool

Thanks for the info guys. I just talked to Trey Cobb of Cobb tuning (his shop is about 5minutes from me). He told me that we should be able to mod the computer to get ~250hp like the Jap spec without a problem. Im sure the WRX will take kindly to mods like 3" exhaust, upgraded intake, downpipes, intercoolers, UDP's and all those goodies (ppl have got neons into the 13's with just bolt ons!)

Hey, Redline8k, that HRC neon (owned by Len Ayala) you saw do 11's is now doing 10's (600bhp)... and is still street driven! Check it out: http://www.turbosystem.com/Hahn_Auto..._quickest.html

Chosenone: Yeah, im going to put my order for a white WRX wagon in this week! cant wait to get it!

peace,
shawn

Did Trey say if just the chip got it or is expecting to get it to 250 or is that with additional mods?

Imho you have to be careful with chips. Of course you can just wind up the boost, but often you need to do other things to the car to help make that safe. I am sure whatever Trey comes up with will be sound.

^-- from previous brochure post

At the bottom of the page it says, "In fact, it is no longer possible for the workshop to 'tune' a new generation Subaru"

What the hell does that mean!? I don't see how this could be possible... maybe it is because of how tightly integrated everything is (electronically)

Yeah, I read that too. I think they are trying to say that the Impreza is already optimized.

BPM said that the difficulty in tuning the new impreza will "separate the men from the boys" in the aftermarket.
