Skip Barber High Performance Driving School Review?
I've been to the Skip Barber two day driving school and found it quite useful.
Thinking about the two-day High Performance Driving School. It's quite expensive, but the caliber of instructors was high at the two day course, and you do get to drive the track in their cars. There are 30% coupons off now through the end of the year. Anyone attend the hypo school? What did you think? |

I did their 3-day racing school a few years ago. I had a bit of track experience already, but I certainly learned some new stuff from the instructors, and wasn't afraid to push hard on the track thanks to using their cars. Percentage-wise I probably improved the least in my class (9 students), but I still picked up 2 seconds a lap (Lime Rock). Some of the newbies picked up 10-15 seconds per lap!

I attended a bunch of their schools and I think they had some value.
I think the most value came out of driving the hyper sensitive and unforgiving open wheel cars. However, if I didn't have the car control skills I've learned BEFORE going to the course I would be for sure owing them money for a car. the program is good, just getting a bit costly for what it is. |

I've been thinking about doing one of these schools. Not necessarily skip barber, but maybe bondurant, jim russell, or spring mountain. Input from anyone who has done the advanced school at any of these places would be helpful

Is your goal to race or just go faster? The three day Skip Barber racing school gets you an SCCA competition license. This course teaches you a lot about getting around the course quickly but doesn't certify you.
I was looking at the performance specs for some of the cars we drove. BMW M3 - 414hp, 0-60 in 4.6, 13.0 quarter @ 110. Lexus IS F - 416hp, 0-60 in 4.2, quarter in 12.6 @113. Porsche Cayman - 0-60 in 6.0, Porsche Carrera - 0-60 5.1s 12.6 @ 112 Lotus Exige - 0-60 4.1s, quarter in 12.6 @ 110. |

I would say that it gives you the tools to be dangerous on a race course. I wouldn't agree with the competition license aspect of it. The few courses I attended there were some very scary drivers who still got signed off... ug

I did a private day at Spring Mountain a couple years ago, a good time for about $2k. A quick skid car session, laps in a Z06 to get used to the course in a "quiet" car, then the rest of the day in a Radical SR3 with the instructor following and talking in my ear. Learned a lot, got to drive an awesome car and had as much seat time as I could handle. I did have to share the track for about an hour with a handful of Elises, the speed difference between them and me in the Radical was astounding.
