This was actually my 8th oil change. There's been visible metal particles in all of the oil changes, some 1/4" sized flakes. This last one had a bunch in it???? ![]() ![]() I've been thinking it's toast-but oil pressures have been the same since day one & these don't really show anything. I noticed yesterday when I changed it The flakes would crumbe if I rubbed them between my fingers. I'm wondering if they are some type of excess adhesive that's in there, I believe they glue the Darton sleeves in-possibly that? No additive, pump 91 on 50/50 meth & [email protected] King bearings, sleeved motor Street driven up in the mountains, so long periods in boost, & also long periods in vacuum closed throttle. Full throttle every time I drive it, but still just street driven. I went with Mobil1 0w40 euro FS this time, pumps a little better on cold starts (where I'm at its typically pretty cold)

![]() Here is my latest oil sample all looks good but silver is up from 1 to 3. Blackstone says not to worry.
![]() I tried something, on the 18500 sample I had a K&N air filter in the stock box for the whole run and on the 22100 sample I had a Denso stock air filter in the stock box and the silicones were the same at 6 ppm. Looks like the K&N and stock filter performed the same. Another thing I’ve done is added a Filter Minder to the intake pre turbo and have noticed something interesting. Normal driving around the minder showed the indicator to be in the middle of the yellow which is normal range but under full boost the minder went to the end of the yellow and just to the tip of the red. Tried this with the Denso filter and the K&N. Both had the same results. Anybody else have a filter minder if so what have you seen. |

Wow, do you live in a dirt free environment? This may be the only Subaru uoa on a K&N with silicon in the single digits that I’ve seen. Normally you can spot K&N users in uoa’s by looking at Si. I went back to a paper filter because Si was much lower with it. It would be interesting to see if Si continues to be low after more uoa’s and various driving conditions. Hopefully the silver is just noise. |

I live an hour south of Houston lots of humidity as far as being dusty I don’t think so. This is a yearly oil change as it’s not my daily driver, car gets driven when it’s nice out. I have the Denso filter in now and was waiting on the UOA as what to use. The silvers got me, I’m 51 and don’t beat on it at all. No launches, put the power on easy but will do full throttle. Probably nothing but as much as I drive it it will be another year for another sample. |

![]() Here's my winter mix:
50/50 PUP 5w30 M1 0w40 euro FS No block heater this winter, so multiple sub zero starts-hence the PUP 5w30. That stuff has really good cold flow when it's double digit neg temps. (Engine still running fine despite all the garbage I've found in the oil, see previous posts) ![]() |

IMO, you need a professional interpretation and guidance in fixing the issue. I don’t think switching brands will solve your issue. http://www.dysonanalysis.com |

![]() Going from 0 silver every time to 3 silver is a potential problem as well.

![]() I've been running Rotella T6 in my 2005 STi for so long I can't recall if I used anything else. This is my latest UOA at 140k miles. Daily driven in Austin, TX. Stage 2 for 100k miles now, maybe more, I can't recall.

![]() Nice! What are filter are you running and at what mileage did you add the make-up oil?

![]() Always the OEM filter. Probably going to move to Wix though since recent filter appear to be low quality. Can't recall makeup oil, but if I'm close to an oil change and it's a little low, I'll just do the change. Where that oil goes... no one knows.

![]() Well, finally got around to getting an oil test done now that the warranty is up. I've been having the oil/filter changed every 3600 ~ 3750 miles at the dealership with OEM filter/oil. The air filter usually gets changed every 2 or 3 oil changes since I live on a dirt road and it gets kinda bad fast.

![]() Your silicon is really low so those frequent air filter changes appear to be working well! Nice uoa.

![]() ![]() So here is my yearly oil change. There is no knocking or ticking coming from the engine. I have been Stage 2 since January which is half way through. Car runs great I have an oil pressure and temp gages and there have been no changes there. Fine knock learn is 0 and I get 1.4 or 2.8 feedback knock, but that seems to be normal. |

![]() Not sure if this is the right thread or not, didn't see another more appropriate place.
2019 STI Bone stock mechanically, no intake, tune, etc First sample was M1 5W30, not bad considering the general hatred for that oil amongst EJ owners. Second was Shell Rotella Gas Truck 5W30, got it on sale for $11 and figured why not, surprised it sheared lower than the M1. Currently have Shell Rotella Multi Vehicle 5W30 in it right now, anxious to see how that sample looks as its a heavy 5W30 while still meeting API SN requirements for warranty reasons. ![]() Last edited by altonka035; 01-03-2021 at 12:43 PM. |

![]() that gas truck looks pretty good imo.
the copper is probably from your oil cooler leaching which is pretty normal for EJs. Moly is just anti-wear additive. Si looks good, because you're using the stock filter. It stayed well within a 30w, and I'd keep on using this for warranty purposes based on this UOA. |

![]() I agree that the RGT looks good. Shell mentioned on BITOG that RGT uses higher levels of anti-oxidants.
That make-up oil for Mobil 1 may have boosted the viscosity a little bit. It's really difficult to tell how much an oil shears unless fuel is zero. There could also be a little bit of fuel contamination. HTHS will impact shear as well, but more companies are not including HTHS in their data sheets. Among M1 Resource Conserving oils, I'd go with the EP version for higher amounts of PAO. Here's a UOA on RT6 MV from an FXT. Notice the differences in fuel results. Initial estimate by OAI = <1% Follow-up OAI fuel reading by gas chromatography = 2.4%! Same sample sent to Blackstone = Trace |

![]() I was very happy with the RGT considering I paid $11 for a 5 qt jug at Advance, I believe they quit carrying it and were clearing out any remaining inventory.
I have high hopes for the RT6 MV, was debating doing an analysis on the current oil or waiting until the following oil change when the temperatures will be warmer and should provide a better idea of how the oil handles heat (this makes sense in my head at least). |
