Default 00 JDM GC8 wont crank, no noise at all.

My car has had this problem for a few weeks now, most of the time it starts strong and is fine. But sometimes it wont start after being warmed up, i turn the key to ACC and wait to hear the fuel pump prime (which it does). Then push in the clutch and turn the key....nothing, all the lights work, all of them. I strongly suspect the starter has eaten it, and the battery is only a few months old. I have not resorted to a push start yet to see what happens. Any advice would be great.

it could be a bad clutch interlock. make a jumper and bypass it. but first I would check for 12V at the starter solenoid when you turn the key to start. if it is getting 12V = bad starter or starter solenoid. the solenoid may be just dirty, ive had some luck just taking the solenoid apart and cleaning it

I've never come across a GC8 with the clutch switch.

Try a push start.

weird, because all manual trans GC8's have one, check your clutch pedal. i bypassed it b/c i hate having to push the clutch to start the car

I don't have a GC8. However I've driven and worked on at least a dozen over a 5-6 year period from a v1 wrx to a v5 STi-R.

Every GC8 has a clutch switch. Otherwise the car would start without pushing the clutch in.

Ok so further diagnosing my car and swapping with a working starter (free), that starter worked fine, put old starter back on and it worked too. But when i was attempted to start the car, i was not pushing the pedal, but the actual relay switch that the clutch pedal pushes in. Faulty wire, or bad relay maybe?

This problem happened to a buddy of mine, turned out that the bracket holding the switch was just bent. We sure did feel stupid when we got that one fixed after 2 days.

My 08s been doing it off and on last couple months and at first it would start after I stabbed the clutch again leading me to believe it be intermittent no connect. However it's been mre frequent and a second and 3rd, so on clutch stab doesn't work.
Just something to think about. I know mines my starter. There's very, very rarely any other culprit to a full power and no start other than a starter itself.

i have no idea what you guys are talking about. all manual transmission cars have some sort of switch on the clutch pedal to ensure the car doesnt start without you pushing the pedal in. obviously automatics dont have this (though they do usually use the brake pedal switch to make sure you press the brake pedal before you shift out of park)

toupedave, check your pedal box at the clutch pedal for the small black switch that detects when you push the pedal in all the way. there is a little plastic pad that clips onto the pedal and presses the switch. sometimes the pad wears out or breaks and falls off, making it very hard to press the switch. or something could be a little bent and the switch isnt being pressed for some other reason.

Some have them some don't.

My 99rs and 2000 sti both had one, my 96wrx does not have one.

All manual cars? Seriously? I guess you've never touched a car pre 2000.

My 96 wrx doesn't have said switch, my 91 Skyline doesn't. There may be a cutoff year where they are required to have it.

So i crawled underneath the dash and took a look at the relay, the wires are fine and it is plugged in and rubber tab on the back of the clutch pedal is still on there and straight. Car works fine now after the mysterious issue, worried that it will come back and haunt me later when i am hours away from base.

My understanding with this whole clutch switch relay, is you simply the wires going into the relay together. So the ECU is fooled that the relay is always triggered, thus no need to push the clutch in. I have yet to do this little trick though, just what i have heard.

You know what.

I have only come across ONE Subaru with a ****ing clutch switch. It was a 2001 Impreza wagon 2WD. I haven't come across a single real deal non swapped GC8 with one so far. The only version GC8 I haven't driven is the 6. The last one I drove was a '99 V5 about 18 months ago. I never turn the key with the pedal depressed when I drive, the only exception was company vehicles I drove at my old employer which had them.

Anyone else want to try to me otherwise?

I think all the confusion as to what cars come with clutch pedal switches and what one don't is because we have people here from different country's. i_c_the_light is from New Zealand and others here from Japan I'm sure they have different requirements for cars there as to if they have clutch switches. In the US almost all manual cars will have the switch, mainly because most Americans are stupid and don't think and like to sue others for things that are there fault, so clutch switches have been required here sense like the 70's. The only cars I have driven with out the switch are old 70's and older stuff and some big heavy duty trucks.

That is exactly what I am saying. All I have to do to start my car is turn the key. How is this so unbelievable to you?

This is a possibility. However, every BMW E30 I have some across has not had the switch including my brothers 1989.

Super resurrection bump...

Only GC8 that came with a clutch safety switch was the Ver6/2000. All gc8s prior to that didn't have them and, YES... you can start the car w/o pressing in the clutch pedal. Main reason I know this is because I had to install one into my Ver5 RA to set up my 2 Step Launch Control. I had to wire it directly into the ecu bcuz there isn't a harness.
