Post What probe should i use for EGT gauge

I have already decided to get the Autometer Phantom EGT gauge but i don't know what probe to get these are my different choices
1 HKS EGT Probe $143(not sure if it comes with mount)
2 Autometer Competition Series Probe kit $97.99
3 Autometer Street Series Probe kit $47.95

It doesn't bother me if it reacts really fast as long as it works really good, i need one to tune my s-afc when i get it and most likely will end up using a 4wd dyno to tune it with.

works really good = acts really fast. if you dont have a probe that acts quickly how are you going to tune from it?

Here is a picture of the Autometer probes:

The top one is the 5249 Street Probe, while the bottom one is the 5244 Competition Probe. Note that the Competition Probe has an exposed sensing element - probably the reason why it responds so much faster than the Street Probe.

I'd recommend the Competition Probe, as the full length of the probe wiring is protected by a steel braid.

Meanwhile, the Street Probe has a short 8" (20 cm) section covered in steel braiding, and then relies on a two-conductor cable with vinyl insulation and crimp terminals. The crimp terminals use cheesy nyloc nuts and bolts for the electrical connections. The heat shrink you see in the picture is intended to be used to seal up the nuts and bolts, but the instructions make no mention of this. In fact, it didn't come with any instructions at all (the 5244 did).

Edit: added recommendation.

The HKS sensor works well.... I have one with my HKS gauge.

I have been told the Autometer Competition Series Probes are good (fast reacting too). Its justt he stock ones that leave a bit to be desired.

Thats what i dont like about autometer they dont come with probes. You should get an apex el series egt. It has 30 sec playback, temp warning, and it comes with a probe so you dont have to buy a seperate one. Thats the one i have, and its great.

Well, the price of an Autometer gauge & a probe is still cheaper than the other gauges... whether they're better or not is still up in the air, IMO.

You can tap it in, but it may be a little risky with the thin headers. Welding would be the best approach.
