Default For everyone hating on the '08's.

Having performed a few simple and basic mods to my '08 REX, I have to say that I understand Subaru's logic a little bit better (even if I don't entirely agree with it). Obviously Subaru took a look at the community (us) of true WRX fans with the last gen. and realized that we tend to want to make upgrades to suit our own personal tastes and preferences. They probably figured that by building the new WRX to more of a price point and adding feature content, navi (in the states at least), VDC, etc., they would sell more of their highest-priced (most profitable) Impreza-based model (until the STI comes out). At the same time, they probably figured that the harder-core enthusiasts (like us) would realize the chassis' shortcomings right away and upgrade them whenever possible (unlike Mr. & Mrs. Joe Average consumer, who would be buying the most high-performance car they'd ever owned). Having done just a few basic mods like lighter wheels and upgraded sway bars, I can tell you that the car feels very different.

While I can understand Subaru dropping features like the aluminum hood and trunk, and even a rear lsd, in favor of things like VDC and side-curtain airbags, my objection is to them doing things like equipping the new WRX chassis with tiny little sway bars, heavy-ass stock wheels and downsized (from 215 to 205 tires). I mean, the fact that the new car is lighter than the previous-gen, despite an increase in interior space is impressive and the car is much more refined overall than the previous-gen. My reasoning is also supported by the fact that the new WRX retails for about $2500 less Cdn than the previous-gen. However, this is your FLAGSHIP car (well, after the STI) Subaru. WTF!??. Couldn't you have at least bumped up the pony count by 10-15 horsies??

The upside to this is that it is fairly easy, maybe even more so than the previous-gen (which had a higher performance envelope from the factory) to substantially upgrade the new car's performance for relatively little cost. I'm replacing my stock airfilter with a K&N tomorrow, and I'm confident that I'll notice a difference in high-rpm pull (and hopefully fuel economy) with it. I think that as these cars become more popular and mods become more plentiful and cheaper we'll see some amazing cars, which will only get better once the new STI makes it's debut.

But seriously, WTF is up with that UGLY STOCK GRILLE????

The Flagship cars are the Legacy line, the Impreza is a PITA for SOA.

+1

The Impreza is still around so Subaru has a chasis to use in the WRC...I am willing to bet that they make ALOT more on the legacies and outbacks...since those are the Subarus I see ALL the time

Right, because they're ALWAYS featuring the LEGACY in Subaru commercials, sliding around rally-inspired courses in the LEGACY'S signature colors of WR Blue and gold and are constantly playing up their WRC championship heritage that was built behind the wheel of the LEGACY, right??

Aluminum hood and trunk were dropped due to aluminum prices being high.

Uhhhhh yes, actually it was.

If it were not for McRae winning in a Legacy in the early 90's the Impreza WR programme would have never been.

Edit: and Subaru has not put rally footage in their commercials in about 4 years. Most of the commercials are for the Outback and Tribeca.

I believe the Legacy is what started Subaru's rallying...

And are you referring to the commercials of a family traveling in the rain in an Outback while playing Everyday is a Winding Road by Sheryl Crow? Or the ones with Crocodile Dundee? Or maybe the "Its what makes a Subaru a Subaru" ones...lol

I think Subaru has 1 commercial for the new Impreza and the car isnt even in motion, its a filmed infront of a green screen or something....

At least the STI retains the aluminum hood. The Impreza never had an aluminum trunk - only the Spec-C had that (iirc).

I am aware that Subaru orginally began their rally campaign with the Legacy and that they had a string of successes with the car before they switched their efforts to the Impreza as a result of the Legacy chassis growing larger/heavier and moving more upscale in the Subaru lineup. My point is not to denigrate the rally heritage of the Legacy but to simply point out the role of the WRX/STI and Subaru's WRC championships won with these cars in their marketing/brand image. After all, this is NASIOC, the North American Subaru IMPREZA owners club

So you just learned about the Legacy (likely after a quick google search to verify that I was correct) and now your comeback is this is NASIOC blah blah blah Impreza club blah blah?

Yeah, I'm just going to skip the lot of it and ask, bitch are you retarded?

You managed to somehow respond to a thread regarding the performance attributes of the new WRX by arguing the role of the WRX vs Legacy in Subaru's lineup. Yeah, I'M the retard, BITCH! Shut your face!

Subaru is continuing in its long tradition of building hideous reliable vehicles. The '08 Impreza is no exception, neither was the previous version Impreza. Shut up about it already. The car is hideous as are all Subaru's. That's whats unique about them.

I'm in favor of the VDC... Lots of the die hards here are completely resistant to a computer doing that job for some reason, and yes, the first year or two might not work great, but once the bugs are out it will work FAR better then any manual system for daily driving or anything else outside of a track/strip. Nobody complains about an ecu running the engine anymore, but when fuel injection and modern engine controls started showing up, the die hards thought the sky was falling then too.

anyway, wrx tires have always been 205 iirc, so they weren't downsized.

looks... people would be shocked if subaru managed to come out with a vehicle that was actually appealing at first glance! why break tradition now.

You seem to think the Impreza is the end all be all of the Subaru line up, and it's not.

So yeah, bite my hammer, dough boy.

Ugh, not another '08 is great/not great thread.

It is what it is. Subaru designed a car they thought would sell well and in sufficient quantities. Either buy one and enjoy it or don't. If you are a big enthusiast who loves to mod the car, then your going to do it whether the car starts out driving like an Elise or a Buick LaCrosse.

People badmouthed the looks of the 02's when they came out, the 04's when they came out, or the '06's when they came out. Why should the 08 be any different? Besides, for everyone that dislikes the '08's appearance on here, I keep reading reviews who seem to think it looks like it could be a BMW. Not that they are pretty, but such comparisons would suggest that someone thinks it looks upscale.

FYI: 06/07's WRX's came from the factory with 215/45R17 tires.

Also FYI, Legacy outsells Impreza about 2-1, but whether SOA makes significantly more money per unit on Legacy is questionable. Although Legacy costs little more, it also has more feature content and a nicer quality interior. It also usually has significantly higher rebates on the hood. That said, it is still the "flagship" model. At least in the US.

If you have driven the 08, then you would realize that the vehicle is a leap in comfort and interior quality. I thoroughly enjoyed driving it, although it did make me miss my 03 even more. It comes very close to the fun factor that my old rex did, but it does seem to lack the rush, rumble, and fun. Besides it visually being unappealing, my main disdain for the new 08 is that it was about 3.5K more than my good ole bugeye, which had a ton of options added on. I am sure by February there will be a low interest special to clear some out, perhaps that may tempt me enough to bite, but as for now I am not able to justify the new price for an uglier face, despite the better ride comfort and interior.
