Has anyone noted that you can see it shift into second? The whole car suspension moves, looks like the guy missed the shift a little even. Definitely not a CVT

Maybe manual mode CVT operation w/paddle shifters wasn't as clean as it should be and that was one of the things being calibrated during the testing?

I just think it will be funny when Subaru releases the *new* STI that costs $50,000 because it will not have 360ish hp......

WRX's should be between 24-27K
and
STI's should be between 33-37K

NEW

These are supposed to be fun affordable cars for the "average joe".....:Subaru quit trying to sell 30+K wrx's and 40+K sti's

My only opposition to an "Impreza GT" comes from knowing that it would still be 100% Impreza in the cabin, which I would only pay $20k for no matter what was under the hood.

I really hope they leave the logical step up from a loaded Impreza to be a base WRX. I think they should maintain a similar option/pricing regime for the Impreza and WRX compared to what they employ now, just with a WRX/STI that competes with the hot hatches in the cabin.

They need German interiors with plenty of technology and 6 crisp gears. Optional dual-clutch would be great, but wish for that and you'll probably get a CVT.

Aside from the existence of a reasonably roomy 5-door option, the interior is the only thing about the next WRX that has me worried. I never thought this would be the case, but VW spoiled me and I can't go back to economy class. I'm sure the looks and performance will not disappoint, handling too if they can apply any lessons from the BRZ.

I'm really fully in agreement. If the WRX price starts to approach that of a BMW 3-series... you buy the 3-series.

NASIOC should sticky a poll asking what type of car they want the next gen wrx/sti to be available as. Options could include 5 door hatch, 3 door hatch, coupe, sedan etc.. It seems like almost everyone here has their own opinion on what they want from the car so it may be interesting to get some quantitative data.

My choice would be a 4 door hatch similar to the Veloster with emphasis on small size as opposed to the pattern of bigger body stylings over the last 5 years. I'd prefer less luxury and more performance form the STi as well. I could see the WRX as being the model that could be fitted with excessive luxury and technology and have the STi be the more raw performance driven model. Another year or two until we know for sure I reckon.

The size-complaint of the WRX could be addressed if Subaru just released a decent Legacy GT and brought back the Legacy GT wagon. For people that want turbocharged and room for folks (and stuff), those cars would be the ticket.

For others that want to keep it compact and sporty, the WRX really should be smaller than what it is right now. The issue is trying to please everyone with a limited range of vehicles.

I'm more concerned about how the interior will turn out. I can live with a mediocre exterior (I prefer a sleeper anyway), but I would like to have some comfort and quality inside where I'll be enjoying the performance.

Wasn't that the goal in 2002? And isn't that 2002 $24k worth $30,573.25 now. Seems like I walked out of the showroom paying around $26K. I think the idea of a Impreza GT to be a good one.

The only thing I have seen printed, or heard stated is that they are splitting the lines. Not that they won't have a common chassis, or any other similarities.

There isn't enough information to draw the conclusions you've come to, it could mean what you're saying, and it could simply mean that the WRX and STI don't have the words Impreza on the car, and aren't found on the website under the Impreza heading.

All that you're doing is spreading your personal conclusions that is at best only going to make you disappointed if it doesn't come to fruition, and at worst, if people take what you say for reality, there will be more people that are disappointed and unhappy with Subaru, all because they believed what you say.

So, do yourself, and us a favor, if you read this somewhere from the mouth of a Subaru representative, please link it, otherwise, don't try to pass your assumptions (or the assumption of random car blogs trying to drum up readership) as fact.
By splitting the lines it is implying that the WRX and STI will not resemble in any fashion an Impreza outside of some typical Subaru styling traits. If it shares a chassis it will most likely be heavily styled/modified to not look/perform anything like an Impreza. If they decide to use something like a modified BRZ chassis that would be preferable.

The point being is when the new WRX/STI comes out the first thing that should come to mind is not a roided out Impreza/econobox. Instead it should be a complete breathe of fresh air for the series if in fact they are becoming their own line. Which would be the logical conclusion.

They have many options they can go with and a clean slate to start with. To do anything outside an overall improvement in all areas would be a waste of R&D and make the entire wait seem asinine.

Like I mentioned earlier; "how hard would it be to slap on performance bits and aesthetics on an impreza and call it a WRX like they always have and why would they wait this long to release essentially what is a roided out impreza?" I mean correct me if I am wrong but with every release/facelift of the Impreza, the WRX and STI were released at the alongside it. Why make so a large gap in release dates if in the end its still an Impreza?

People are already disappointed with Subaru. There are plenty of reasons to be. The ball is in their court now to come up with something that shuts everyone up. If they do then I will be one of the first buyers in line for a new STI. Keep the price down around 32-33k for a base model that does not require 1k+ in mods to be track ready and quit playing the if it aint broke don't fix it game. we all know how well that worked with the big 3. Don't make the flagship of a brand follow that mantra.

This thread is interesting.

I bought my 13 WRX because my 05 RX8 was almost at 100k miles, and I needed something sooner than later. I opted for the WRX opposed to the STi because I'm considering it a "layover" car, and for the price of the STI, I could have gotten a low mileage 335i sedan (sedan be opertive word here). A cash-paid base model WRX fit the bill nicely.

I am enjoying my WRX at this point, and expect to continue to do so.

That said, My biggest hope is that the WRX/STi to come has engine/tranny, and overall driveline components that can handle the mods that virtually everyone that buys these cars winds up doing. I'd drive my current WRX into the dirt if I could bolt on mod it to a reliable 350 whp.

You've been spoiled by German fit and finish and forget the lacking performance and electrical gremlins that comes with it, at least in the VAG world (although that said, I do miss the fact that my 1.8t GTI fit like a glove, even if it was a slow understeering pig at the quick to find limits).

Japanese cars generally have a philosophy of doing more with less. Accept that Subaru will put out a good platform with an OK interior. The new Impreza's have a lot of soft plastics now, which is step up from the hard GR plastics that leaves marks when you touch them.

Well Subaru is doing a lot less with less. That's great that the dash is a pad now instead of hard plastic but it doesn't change the fact it's still the worst looking interior in the segment after only a year on the market. Look at that picture above. The only indication that the interior didn't come from the 1990's is the LCD in the gauge cluster that every manufacturer has copied from Audi. Horrible, horrible interior design. Hopefully Subaru really spruces it up for STI's because that will be a hard sell if the STI stays or rises from its current price point.

I liked the idea of an Impreza GT, but in another (now locked) thread a few months back, Cocoa Beach Bum posted this info, so I've pretty much given up on the idea of a turbo Impreza GT... this mule does not seem like it could be an Impreza GT.

FHI recently published its annual report for FY2012 (see http://www.fhi.co.jp/english/ir/report/ar.html) and it included a long message from Toshio Masuda, who is an FHI VP and Chief General Manager of the Subaru Product & Portfolio Planning Division. Here's an excerpt from that message:
Quote:
From a different perspective, the first- and second-generation Impreza display a sports-oriented concept that began with the development of Subaru’s first pure sports sedan. Cultivating a high-performance image bolstered by successes in top categories of the World Rally Championship showcases yet another aspect of Subaru’s brand value. At the same time, we have a strong desire as a manufacturer to expand customer categories for the new model Impreza and increase sales in global markets. As a result of our considerable research, we made a major decision to equip the new Impreza with a naturally-aspirated engine only. From a marketing perspective, we decided to move away from a strictly sport-oriented performance image featuring a turbo engine, for which we are known in the market. In terms of manufacturing, we chose not to incorporate turbo engines or other high-performance design concepts from the very earliest stages of development. Rather, we were able to utilize our resources as well as investment [to] more efficiently and successfully develop the new Impreza by focusing on the naturally-aspirated engine as a key characteristic of this model. Without a doubt, nothing is more important at the development phase than determining customer needs. As such, we realize that providing environment-friendly automobiles best meets customer needs and has been an important factor in the strong sales we have enjoyed.
That is why there won't be a turbo Impreza in the future, unless the engine is very small (i.e. 1.5L or smaller).

People thiught the new impreza was hideous in spy pics. Then when it came out, suddenly it was a HUGE improvement of the previous "Corolla" styled Impreza. its the circle, the circle of life (here on Nasioc). If the new WRX looks like the Impreza (interior) but with soft touch materials, ala' 2013 Civic, it'll be a smash hit, expecially with hew body panels! I'm expecting an interior not much different than the 2014 Forester XT.
