You havent ever actually served as a combatant in any sort of victor unit have you?

Trust me when I tell you the Vee is CRAP. They are horrible for getting in and out of quickly..especially with gear on. A 9mm round could probably penetrate where they actually put armor in the "armored" version.

But as someone who actually has had to face the very real threat of mobility vs getting blown the **** to pieces by an rpg, ied, or some damn jihadist suicide bomber....Ill take the better armor and the worse ride thanks.

But. it would be nice to have something simple. Marines are just going to break anything with a lot of tech in it. Especially in the field. All that hybrind blah blah technology blah blah is good for nothing except keeping the pogue's out of combat, but all that crap is just plain unreliable

im pretty sure all H1's were produced by am general. Only the H2, H3's were produced by GM. which is why the h2 and h3's sucked balls compared to the H1.

Gm was more on the marketing side of things with the H1 and "Hummer" name.

i will take a HMMWV any day over anything. proven in the battlefield numerous times. my cousin who survived a roadside bombing due to the hmmwv being up-armored will attest to that.

I think you meant MRAP
Humvees don't survive roadside bombs unless they are yards and yards away.

I was just reading my Car and Driver today and they have a Best of the U.S. feature.

One of the vehicles featured is the Oshkosh M-ATV which looks pretty promising for the military as a HMMWV replacement. Lots more mobile than the MRAPs and vastly better armor than the HMMWV

This. Put a Marine in a windowless doorless room with 3 ball bearings and he will have lost one and broken another in 30 minutes. Unless it is proven reliable it doesn't need to be incorporated, after all, who's going to dry the grunts tears when the convoy with their hot chow breaks down and doesn't get to them in time and they have to eat an MRE? BTW, you spelled poag wrong.

If there every was a good use for hybrids, it would be troop transport
the only problem i see is the reliability of hybrid technologies in the conditions the vehicles would be facing...

With all the mud, dust, vibration, etc that military vehicles go through, is it safe to rely on something so hi tech?

I hate to bring this up, but look at toyota, sure some people think its all mechanical but its starting to look like there may be some sort of electrical issues going on as well.

Luckily for most civilians, MOST of the time, its not a life or death situation. If it were a military vehicle that malfunctioned, it could easily mean death. User what works and has been proven to work. Most hybrid tech found in cars is too new to really see how reliable it is in adverse conditions.

The military must have changed a bunch since I was a light infantry squad leader--I could practically count on one hand the number of times I had hot chow while in the field. I recall being deployed overseas and waiting in the jungle for a helicopter to drop us some chow--MREs. The damn pilots dropped it at the wrong coordinates. When this was reported to our command over the radio, the response was, "forage, over."

The only duramax trucks are the Alpha H1 and trucks converted by Predator for certain HMMWV's licensed by the govt.
You are right that GM was still licensed to own the rights to the civilian truck. Mostly because the Hummer name was only tied to one model truck (like if the Impreza was purchased from Subaru) However, the chassis between the military & civilian models is slightly different.

H1's were built by AM General, as is the H2. There are two different plants, the chassis of both civilian/emergency & military were in the same building. The military trucks were 100% completed in one building. The civilian/emergency were transferred across the property to the next plant where the assembly was completed.

GM produced the H1 and made significant changes to the vehicle from the AMG days. They also bumped the price to double what AMG was charging.

There are more differences between the different HMMWV variations and the Hummer/H1 than, say a JDM Impreza line and USDM Impreza line since '93)

Why even mention the H2/3s; they were built on the Suburban and Colorado chassis. The H1 at least shared a similar chassis engine with the mil version. One of the biggest differences between the mil and civ vehicles was the electrical system, 24v versus 12v.

ooops on the spelling. But IM a Marine. Never been known for being a great speller lmao

lol @ the windowless doorless room thing. So freaking true. This one time my platoon was given this field gps unit that was supposed to be super durable we broke the damn thing in 15 minutes.

What is wrong with them? Are they too top heavy or something?

The MRAP I can see would be a problem in certain conditions b/c it simply could not get to areas due to its large size and long wheel base, but those things looked at least like a decent compromise between mobility and armor.

They have so many mechanical issues it is not even funny. We already flipped one, where a humvee wouldnt even think of doing that.

Yeah they look top heavy, but it is not always easy to tell just from looking.

AM General got a new contract:

Quote:
The future of hundreds of workers at Mishawaka's AM General plant is looking more secure today. The company has received a contract to build over 2,500 Humvees for Afghanistan, according to an AM General spokesperson.

The contract is worth $619 million. The vehicles will be used by the Afghanistan police force and the Afghanistan National Guard.

This better news comes on the heels of a sobering report in February that the Army was considering not buying any more new military Humvees.

Good to see.
