wow i wish i saw this thread a couple weeks ago. I had the P0171 code for a few days, so I cleaned my MAF and reset the code with my AP. Since then the CEL has stayed off, but I'm still getting the stuttering boost idle issues that Cinnabuns mentioned above. I will be installing a new front O2 sensor as soon as it arrives. In the meantime I guess I'll just keep checking all my hoses and airbox.

Well guess what... the re-torquing helped .... but my light just came back on yesterday. Same P0171 CEL.
I inspected the engine and it appears the tumble generator valve gasket is blown on the passenger side (where the intake manifold connects to the TGV). Large amount of spatter and fresh leakage indicative of air/oil on the side of the TGV. So new gaskets are getting ordered. I had to remove the air intake snorkel to fish out a bolt that I dropped. While I had it off I inspected the side of the TGV and it was coated with a carmelly oil blow off from the intake gases. I'm guessing the re-torquing helped the issue for a time but the gasket is definitely shot now. I'm going to use thread lock when I reassemble so as to avoid future loosening after the gaskets are replaced. |

They have MAF cleaners at most local parts stores.
It's best to use those to cean your MAF. MAFs are expensive to replace of you ruin them with a solvent/cleaner that wasn't meant for this purpose. |

Well the cars up and running again. I got a new (reconditioned) maf and it did nothing so I returned that. My father grabbed my a new o2 sensor today and that seemed to be the problem.
I'll take pics of the o2 sensor tomorrow to show how it looks for future use/help. I was at work when my father got home from work (when he had the part) so he decided to put the o2 in for me and (for some reason) decided to change the 2 spark plugs on that side of the engine. Either way, the cars running smooth (perhaps even smoother than before). Next, I'm hoping I pass inspection in July |

I have been running a K&N Typhoon CAI for the a couple years without any problems. Yesterday, I decided to pull the end piece, move the filter and use it as a short ram. Driving it hard I had no problems, driving in cruise control for 10 min, P0171, reset it... it came on again today. Trying to decide whether to run some Lucas or just revert back to CAI

Look exactly like mine but I don't have any P0171 instead my AFR was all over and on top of that my headers cracked. Actually I have this code before and it usually happened on highway but I guess once it got worse then it stopped and instead my AFR went crazy.

riddle me this
The ce light comes on, I go to Autozone to have the code pulled. P0171. The guy clears it for me. Two days later it comes on again. I have it cleared again. Now I've reported here that the car drives perfectly. No issues. So I figure I can live with it, but I want to be sure no other codes are popping up. I decide to buy an OBDII reader (got one on sale for $50.00). Over the next week I clear the P0171 code twice more. Going on three weeks now and no new ce lights. The car still runs great. Is it just a matter of time? I had that front O2 sensor replaced 17 months ago. Keeping fingers crossed (but suspecting my little friend will return).

My o2 sensor was 3 months old :-( (the one you see on the picture) Maybe I kill it when my headers cracked who knows...

hi Cy,
I guess I agree with you that a cracked header might have something to do with your sensor failure. If you need to order a new o ne, this site seems to have good prices, better than going to the dealer and free shipping: http://www.oxygensensors.com/index.p...024&height=768 hang in there. darryl |

Oh thanks but I already have one replaced under warranty so I'm fine right now, also I'm just working on 2 STi part-outs so I have another 2 used for sell.

Argh, this code is so frustrating. I've been chasing for an answer every day since Wednesday. I've been going down the list. I changed the air filter and made sure the box was tight. I've tightened all the hoses. I've cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. I've cleaned the IAC valve and replaced the gasket. I've even dropped full price on a front A/F sensor at the dealer. Code still keeps coming back. Car drives perfectly though, and I got about 110 miles at the 3/4 tank mark.
I just bought the car on Wednesday. 0 mods on it. |

I feel for ya, Myfirst00. What is vexing me is that I reset my p0171 a few weeks back now and it has not returned. Before that it would pop up again only a few days after reset. I keep expecting it to. How can it start then stop so mysteriously?
I usually complain about the mileage I get, but yours seems to be well down, unless you're running your car very hard. 99% of my driving is city cycle and I average just a bit over 17mpg. It's possible that your replacement front O2 sensor has failed. Electric parts will do that, but rarely. Did you buy the car from a dealer or a private owner? Maybe you can go back and discuss this issue with either one, at any rate. good luck, darryl |

I don't think I explained it correctly. With the mile mark I'm at, I'm looking at 300ish to the tank which will be about 25mpg. I'm going to replace the fuel filter today. The car was sitting at the dealer for 3 months.

Oh!!! I see! Impressive! Can you clear the code yourself? I bought an obdII reader for $50.00, and so far it seems to have paid for itself. I was prepared to live with the code, and simply reset it every few days until I could do something better (but the damned thing has not recurred). I also wanted the reader so I could assure myself that the ce light didn't come on for something more serious. The car runs perfectly still.

Yeah I bought a code reader from eBay a few years ago for the same price. Best investment I've made. I can clear it. The code comes back just like in the OP's description. 15 miles or so after the second start.

Replaced the fuel filter. Also took off the intercooler, tightened the turbo inlet hose, and checked every single hose in the system. Also replaced the PCV valve while i was in there. Anyone have an exhaust gasket issue before the bank 2 sensor and get this code? Engine seems to be loud around this area.

Mine ran OK with a bad front O2 sensor too, but I run open loop a lot (utec), when not just cruising.

Well the code just came back today when I was ~1hr away from home so I had to drive home with it (without knowing what code I was throwing ). Tomorrow I'm going to change the driver side plugs, clean the IACV and check all connections. If this doesn't correct the code I'm going to stick my stock intake back on as I have inspection in July!
Hopefully something I do tomorrow works. |

I still don't get it
It's been over two weeks since I last posted that I've had no return of the ce light (P0171). I can report that it still has not returned. I'm absolutely baffled. YMR that I cleard the code twice myself, and that since then all has been well. Also the car ran the same and still does, with or without the ce light; just fine.
darryl ps I guess I'd rather be lucky than good. |

Well I took apart the IACV today to clean it today and noticed that the gasket has swelled to the point when it's way too big to seal correctly! I'm going to pick up a new gasket (as well as two new screws) for the IACV and hope that fixes the problem; Next will be putting in the stock intake (not too sure if it'll do anything, but I'm running out of options).
