Default Please help - tubo hesitation/stutter on '08 WRX - 3100 miles

Howdy. I am about to take my car for the first service and I have an issue that's really bugging me and I want to make sure it's not just me. I have an 08 WRX 5-door manual. When flooring the accelerator WOT or 3/4 I get a stutter in the turbo boost that's quite pronounced. This happens throughout the rev range. The car is only 3000 miles old and has always done it - it's not gotten any better. Is it me? Is this normal (I don't think so) but this is the first Subaru I have owned...

Any suggestions? I really value your assistance.

Thanks

Spinadog.

PS: sorry for the three useless posts - I just needed to get enough to post this thread.

Agreed. Did you baby it during the first 1-2k?

The book says 1k before WOT, so he is fine. Answering your question OP, its the factory tune that is giving you that feeling. Cobb stage 1 or a Open source tune will get rid of the problem you are having.

Thanks for replies - however, it's a lease car (not that I abuse lease cars but I treat it without kid gloves, so to speak). I gave it the correct running in process. The hesitation is pronounced and really annoying - it sure feels like the fuel is being cut off in a stuttering feel - almost like a blocked injector. I feed it good gas (only Chevron). I also get a rough idle too, but this may be normal. As mentioned I get the same feel at 3/4 throttle too.

I just wondered if we had anyone out there who had felt the same experience with their 2008 model and whether this is a normal condition.

(edit: since it's a lease car, that's why any upgrades are out of the question. I just want a smooth running car!)

Mine is a lease!!! but all easly removable and re-sellable...

Thats just how the car is tuned from the factory, it will usually only do it the first time you go WOT then after that its good until you drive for awhile cruising then get back on it it will do it again...

All the more reason to mod, imho. At least the stuff that is easily reversible. AP would certainly qualify.

AccessPort can always be reversed and sold after you turn the vehicle back in.

My 08 has some surging effects when I accelerate hard. Haven't tried WOT though.

I had hesitation right around 2700 rpm, especially in second gear... the car would shutter a bit, kick back and then run through the rest of the tach. Some times it was much worse that others, but happened more when going up hills or being cold. My car was a lemon and leaked oil also, so that might have had something to do with it. It was an 08 5 door.

That is *exactly* what I am experiencing - did you get a resolution for this with the dealer?

Thanks

I've noticed similar problems . . . although I am not leaking oil, I do notice that there seems to be what I would call and "uneven" application of power, and NO I am NOT feeling turbo-lag, I know exactly what that feels like.

What I feel is more like I am driving through puddles . . . inconsistent acceleration. It is most noticeable in 2nd and 3rd gears (probably because thats where I open the throttle the most).

That's another great way to describe the feeling - it's not a 'lag' before engagement but an uneven power application, like a surge that comes in waves. I guess stutter is not quite the right term, since it's not that harsh but you can clearly feel the motor power fluctuating by 10% or so. Let's see what happens when I visit the dealer next week. I have some buddies in Subaru too so I may ask them for assistance should I get no resolution....

Keep us updated. I also have the "running through puddles" feeling.

I had the exact same thing on my 06 wrx. The stock tune was terrible. After cobb stage 1 it was all better. The only way to fix this is to get an aftermarket tune of some sort. If you look at Unabomber's manifesto on Engine Management, he says that engine management (a tune) is "required" on all 2004+ turbo subarus except STI. I have to agree with that statement.

Neither of my 08's have any issues. Sometimes when WOT I will a slight wave but I almost think that is me slightly lifting off the throttle. Not sure.

But I do not have any hesitation, bucking, or anything like that.

Red 08 = 19,000 mi
White 08 = 12,000 mi

No mechanical issues at all.

Update: Finally went to the dealer - dealer could find nothing wrong with it but admitted that the 'stutter' was within specifications. I must admit that, at 3800 miles it's been getting a little better. If it is still persistent, I'll get a tech to ride along with me. I'll give it until my next oil change...
