Thumbs up OT Non-Gun Nuts: Everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask (or try)

Dear OT Non-Gun Nuts,

I've noticed there are alot of people in OT who are gun curious and/or that are newbies often times they ask questions publicly and other times I specifically get PM's asking privately. I'm sure Subed, Brucelee, LouTurismo and others have noticed and experience same.
Additionally I've noticed in various firearm related threads past and present that some folks have their firearm facts and figures either a tad askew if not altogether off base. To be fair and kind I will not present examples of such but suffice it to say this is most often obvious to those steeped in gun fu, as obvious as would be to a track slut a noob referring to oversteer incorrectly as understeer. The noob can argue it untill the cows come home but the bottom line is what it is.

So with that thought I came across the following instructional mini-films as taught by 'Chad' at Google Video via the folks at Expert Village.
Unlikemost other firearm instructional videos Chad appears to be your average regular coastal liberal and not an NRA type or some other such beer bellied yahoo foaming at the mouth screaming the virtues of life, liberty and the allmight forty five. He's just a straight talking regular sounding normal looking non confrontational liberal looking could very likely be an OTter type of guy who just happens to like and know stuff about firearms. The vids presented are short and all are work safe although some do feature guns being shot so keep that in mind as per the titles. Again these videos are instructional and do not feature anything other than basic information as geared toward the Stage 0 type of non-Gun Nut.

I've organized the vids into sections to make scrolling and review that much easier...

How about the question " How do I convince my wife that owning a gun is a good idea " ....seriously...we debate about this all the time. I want one for the house for protection, she wants nothing to with one at all.

We had our window shortly after Katrina. Fail to strike while the iron's hot, and look what happens.

Wow, i watched the first one and it seems very basic and straightforward. I've always been very uncomfortable around guns, this should help alot. I'll watch em all tonight after work!

Thanks Janq!

Let me know if you want to go shooting sometime. I'll be happy to take you to the range and let you put a few rounds down range.

Janq..nice post.

ZMANN..me wife had the same deal until I nearly got plugged during a carjacking. Now, while not completely happy, she understands why we're now an armed household. Let me tell you, it most definitely adds to the peace of mind if anything else...

Beautiful. Now then, about the mildot reticle on my scope...

Edit: Found this mildot simulation site. Gives you the basic formulas and whatnot for the sniper set. Dang -- lotta math as the zombies converge on your perimeter.

I would like to try to avoid being carjacked to make a point to my wife...I'm waiting for a rash of break ins or other crimes, but I live in such a crime free area that is not very likely to happen...I've thought about taking her to a shooting range, but she does not want to do that either...

You should try a different approach. The thought of home invasion or car jacking is the furthest form people’s minds when they operate in a relatively safe environment. The “it’s never going to happen to me” syndrome is very easy to live with and there is no stress in having to worry about such scenarios. You tell yourself it’s not going to happen and you don’t have to stress about it. It’s an easy stress free scenario to live with.

I have never told my wife that gun ownership was ever about anything more than hunting or sport (target) shooting. That way she never has to think about dangerous situations that would disturb her well being. That was my approach. She knew that hunting (something I have not done since we’ve been married) and sport shooting was part of my past at the start or our relationship. That made it easier when I started sport shooting again a few months back after a 10 year hiatus. We had a discussion about me buying another gun (house rules on spending more than a C note on a frivolous item). I told her what I was buying and how much. I also approached it as if it was not a request. That way you’re not asking for permission but more like informing. I purchased a new gun and started going to the range. Since then I’ve been priming her for my next purchase (SA 1911 Trophy Match).

Z,

Don't sell her on the component of home defense or fear/paranoia.
Run a flank move and tell her you're going to get involved with the sporting element of competitive handgunning or riflery.
Also notice I said "tell her", not ask, but thats for a different thread.

No doubt you and she both will have no clue what this is or how much fun it can be so go to the following URL's...

* International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA)

http://www.idpa.com

* International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC)

http://www.ipsc.org

* United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA)

http://www.uspsa.org

* Single Action Shooting Society (SASS)

http://www.sassnet.com

* National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA)

http://www.mynssa.com

* National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA)

http://www.mynsca.com

* International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF)

http://www.issf-shooting.org

The above are the governing bodies and image examples toward what are shooting sports known and practiced worldwide.
Non gun folks and even many gun folks alike don't know that there is farfar more to owning a firearm than for being a LEO, or civilians shooting carjackers, animals and/or lawyers in the face.
Rather than coming to your gun adverse spouse with a frontal blunt attack of "I want to get a gun...why? Because I'm afraid of <fill in the blank>...". Why not try a flank and/or rear attack introducing her/him to the sporting end and opportunities toward competition. Mention how these are physical sports (which they are) and as such are healthy outlets for energies as well as being part of your overall fitness regimen. additionally rather than focus on the gun concern pick a sport of the above that interests you and might even interest your spouse then look up all the info you can from their respective website and GIS images of the activities in practice all featuring men as well as women and even at times teens too as they are all family friendly.
There are other sporting firearm associations out there the above are just the onesI'm familiar with and had bookmarked.

Bottom line, if the front door doesn't work then try IDP.

I would also include a gun safe in the very first purchase, especially if you have children, or your neighbors have children. It adds to the initial cost, but I think it is a proactive method to prevent the possibilities of theft or accident. If you would still like to get something that allows for rapid access for home defense, you can check out these:

http://www.bobwards.com/bobwards/ser...ures/801551-03

I unfortunately know nothing about their strengths or weaknesses, my wife and I are planning to start taking Karate again (we both did it when we were kids) for close range self defense. The rest of the time, they can have my wallet/keys/money/tv delete as necessary.

That is a decent approach thanks for all the links, I'll definitely look into some of those and see if there are some in my area. I have a couple of friends who are always interested into going to the shooting range, maybe this is another segway to introduce the subject. But I keep adding hobbies, and having another one would also become and issue as I'm home less and less lately !!!

Also, the www.idpa.com and www.skeet.... all deserve a OT style

ZMAN -- most people build up a fear of guns as they think that they are some sort of mystical tool capable of killing with no warning and no intent. The easiest way to allay those fears is to have the person handle and shoot a real firearm in a controlled and safe environment.

We have a great indoor range in Manchester (www.gunsnh.com) that has plenty of rental guns and will talk you through the experience of shooting. A friend/coworker of mine helps run the place, and we've been planning to put together a NESIC group shoot sometime this spring... I'd reccomend that you come out on your own to either that event or sometime on your own, then take her up there. That way, you'll be able to show her safe handling and share what you've learned.

Easy. Get a new wife.

Either that, or drop her off on the south side of town and arrange a good gang rape for her.

She WILL come around.
