News Subaru Of America, Inc. Announces February 2018 Sales

Subaru Of America, Inc. Announces February Sales
  • Best February ever – monthly sales increase 3.8 percent over February 2017
  • 75 consecutive months of yearly month-over-month growth
  • Best February ever for Crosstrek and Outback
  • 48 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Outbacks sold
  • 55 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Foresters sold
Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 47,249 vehicle sales for February 2018, a 3.8 percent increase over February 2017, and the best February in the history of the company. These results continue the company’s sales momentum from 2017 where Subaru achieved nine consecutive years of record sales and exceeded 647,000 annual sales – a first in company history.

February marked the 48th consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. Crosstrek and Outback sales were notably strong as each model achieved its best February ever. Crosstrek and Outback sales for February 2018 increased 60.7 percent and 4 percent, respectively, over the same month in 2017. Earlier this month, the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek was awarded “Best Compact SUV/Crossover” in Kelley Blue Book’s annual 5-Year Cost to Own Awards.

“During February, the Subaru brand celebrated its 50th year in the United States and our retailers joined in our golden jubilee anniversary by establishing yet another sales record,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and COO. “Special thanks to our customers, retailers, distributors and all of our colleagues who have been on this epic journey with us and for joining us as we embark on our next 50 years.”

“The Crosstrek continues to exceed expectations and will continue to deliver impressive results as its availability improves,” said Jeff Walters, senior vice president of sales. “Based on initial pre-orders, the Subaru Ascent, arriving this summer, will be our next success story bringing new customers the best in safety and versatility.”

Looks at them go, they're proving how well they "get " the target consumer for the WRX and STI with a 10% loss from last February.

They're going to sell nothing but Crosstrek's pretty soon. Subaru is down in 5 of 8 models YTD. But the Ascent will certainly boost things on its arrival.

Impreza was the first on the new platform, sales went up. Crosstrek was the next, sales went up. Forester is next, sales will go up. Ascent will be on new platform and is coming out this summer, sales will be hot. Outback is still on old platform, and despite that, sales still good. However, next year could be trouble as the Ascent will no doubt cannibalize those sales. The other minor models, BRX, WRX, STI don't matter much, but they also will benefit with the new platform and engines.

And yes, the new Crosstrek was a big hit. I think that success will be equaled or bettered by the Forester and Ascent for 2019. Subaru knows what they are doing,... don't kid yourself. Five years straight (or it is six now) of record sales is no small feat.

I wouldn't be surprised if Subaru's 75 month over month of sales increases comes to an end sometime this spring unless they are able to tread water until Ascent comes online this summer. The Forester sales are likely to continue to tail off with SGP redesign likely to debut in April. The Legacy & WRX mid cycles refreshes not rejuvenating sales. Impreza sales are not maintaining last years pace.

We are likely to see a few months of .2 or .4% sales increases (with some creative accounting) trying to hang in there. Maybe some great factory incentives coming up, too, on Outbacks and the old Foresters.

Hey now. They are certainly getting older. Numbers are still better than a decade ago. Even I didn't expect the numbers to stay up until the replacements came. But, 10% on those numbers ain't a crazy amount anyway. It could also be likely they cut back on production for Crosstreks.

75 months in a row of MoM increases. 10 years of sales growth with 9 years of sales records.

They still have something they haven't had to use in quite awhile. Incentives. If it looks like there will be a problem, they'll pull out a couple stops. Like they did at the end of 2011 to preserve the streak. +1

What I'm more "excited" about and a touch surprised about is Subaru has surpassed Hyundai. Wasn't long ago they were double SOA sales.

Show me a model that doesn't drop in sales in its fourth year and it's an old 4 years given it's based on a 7 year old car. This is one negative of Subaru taking so long to get the WRX/STI out as the car is somewhat dated on arrival. Ideally you would like to have the sporty models out within a year or two after the regular model. The current generation is by far the most successful WRX/STI according to sales.

Thanks for backing me up, it's time for them to bring the heat. What's available now is old news and not what the market demands.

Careful, they will drop the wrx saying performance is better defined in the 152hp CVT segment.... instead of admitting they got the market wrong

Having the CVT as an option certainly has to be a key factor in that. 6 out of 10 WRXs sold in Australia are CVTs and I would not be surprised if that ratio was even more skewed in favor of the CVT in America.

Ironically I have never seen a CVT WRX in person, and most people on here have the 6MT. Go to any of the popular 2015+ WRX Facebook groups or the WRX Reddit page though and you'll find that the demographic is quite the opposite, tons of CVT owners everywhere.

Wouldn't put it past them. They might even decide that utility is best defined in the sedan segment and take the 5th door away from the Crosstrek.

Well, if it is, it surely isn't anywhere near us.

CVT equipped WRX's are the exception not the norm in North America.

Interesting. I wonder why it is so skewed in favor of the CVT in Australia then. I'd think of any country as being more manual-centric than the USA.

Because they're smarter. They have higher standards and a commensurate higher standard of living.

Notice that their cars are more JDM-like, that is, better than ours. Notice their aftermarket products for Subarus. Only effective quality, no cheap there.

They understand that the CVT WRX is the overall better vehicle. Simple as that. I've owned two... and agree.

You don't have a lot of noise, here or anywhere else, from CVT WRX owners. That's because they're happily driving their cars... not hanging around on car forums looking for how to change what they bought, or fix what is not right.

Also, some place some value in being safe... safe as that enabled by EyeSight. Not everyone likes to commute with a manual. Given its power, excellent motor and transmission, coupled with EyeSight, the CVT WRX makes an excellent commuter and tourer. Many find those things more than make up for any "loss" of a manual. Obviously, there are more Australians who share that viewpoint.
