Default Backup Camera Install: Where to run the wires?

I am awaiting my new AVIC-Z1 and Crimestopper plate cam (w/ IR) , and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on the install of the camera... specifically... what is the best way to run the for the camera from the rear bumper to the inside of the car?

I have an 06 WRX Wagon. Any help (and pics!) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Off the top of my head, there's a grommet in the bottom of the spare tire well in the wagons that the wiring harness for a trailer is run through when a hitch is installed. You could certainly use that to run a cable from a camera on the bumper up into the cabin.

I think it'll depend on how handy you are really. I've seen cameras installed behind license plates. Drill a hole on the plates, run the cable from behind the bumper to the inside of trunk, to the passenger or driver side (under carpet), and to the HU. I'll see if i can find the post with that explanation. I think it was in another forum. Good luck with the install meanwhile.

Thanks everyone for your input. This thread is going to help me out greatly. I will try and post pics of my install.

I think they are RCAs, and I will probably try running them through the grommet under the spare tire.

About the mount location... I got one of the plate mounted ones that go on top of the license plate... I am not sure how much I like the look... maybe I'll look into WRX4eva's idea... sounds cool

I've seen the one that goes through the license plate. Looks cool. People have no idea that there is a camera there .

Good luck w/ the install.

Default Large diameter back up camera install location?

I just got a large diameter back up camera that has infrared illumination. Any ideas on the best place to install it in my '04 WRX wagon?

Maybe remove the lock cylinder and use the hole for the camera? You'd have to open the trunk from the driver's seat, but that's not really a big deal.

Default Where to mount the large bore back up camera...

I'd love to mount the camera in the key lock cylinder, but it's a wagon, so no can do.

Sorry, I had no idea the wagons don't have a key on the hatch. I guess I learned something new today!

OK, went ahead and installed the backup camera (BUC).

The BUC is a MC-CAM-IR-M from MotoCam 360 Inc. I paid $150 plus shipping. It has built in IR lights that kick in in low light.
Note the lock ring and angle rings on the threaded body of the BUC. I initially tried to install the BUC w/o considering how I would reach the lock ring to tighten it...

I chose to locate the BUC next to my license plate. There's a bunch of polystyrene foam behind the bumper, and also the metal bumper beam which I don't want to mess with. I wasn't sure how close the hole location was to the metal beam, so I pushed a metal rod through the foam to feel around for any obstructions. None were found, so I taped up the area around the hole and drilled it out with a 1.125" dia spade bit. Once through the plastic, I continued to drill into the foam. The bumper beam was JUST below my hole, and the deck of the trunk is maybe 6" behind the face of the hole, giving me enough room to mount the ~4" long camera.

I ran the power and RCA cables up through the rubber grommet in the trunk floor (the same rubber grommet my trailer light wires run through; the one's I never use). I tapped the 12 VDC from my remote power on my amp in my trunk.

After I stuck the camera in the hole, and began to realize that there was no place to stick my hand in from behind to load the lock/angle rings onto the camera body, or tighten the lock ring. So, I began to remove the rear bumper cover.

The first snap fastener I tried to remove broke! The rest eventually came out with much more gentle, repeated prying, and after about an hour I was able to pry the bumper cover back far enough to get to the back of the foam where the camera wire ran out. I did not remove the entire bumper cover assembly because of the broken lower center snap fastener. The trailer hitch I have installed...and that I don't use...got in the way of a recovery attempt on the broken snap fastener. Prying the cover back from the top/center allowed me to load the rings onto the camera, but I still didn't have any way of grabbing the lock ring because the camera body was encased in the foam. I could reach the lock ring from the gap adjacent to the license plate, and then turn the camera to tighten it, but I never got the assembly as tight as it should be. The only way to do this right is to remove the whole bumper cover. I will continue to work on this, but the camera is in and works.
Rear view of BUC.

Cant' really see the camera from head height behind the car.

Screenshot of monitor which displays the BUC when I shift into reverse, or I can select to keep it on constantly.

The IR lights turn on in low light and glow red. Ooooo.

So in summary:
The BUC is pure bling and barely practical: I can turn my head just as easily as look at the monitor, but using it to backup between two cars parked closely together last night made me almost hit one because I was looking at the monitor instead of the cars. OK, I usually back into parking spots, and have on occasion backed into a bush whose sharp little branches have scratched my bumper, and the BUC might help here. The main reason I installed it is because my head unit had the capability of using it. Plus I had to know for myself what it would be like.
Bitch to install: every time I pop plastic pieces of my Subie, I break or lose fasteners. On this install I broke the lower center bumper cover fastener (which I can't get to to fix), broke 2 of the trunk rear trim V-clips, and cross threaded the bolt that holds the rear quarter panel section of the bumper cover to the side of the car (it's in, but it ain't right).
Decreased security: Any one who looks at my car from the rear and sees the BUC knows that I have a monitor inside as well. I have a mostly stealth stereo system installed. The only sore thumb is the double DIN monitor, which tinted windows and a sun shield help hide it. The BUC screams pawn shop opp.
The mounting location: I like. It provides a good view point for the BUC, and is somewhat protected from road debris and damage from loading/unloading the hatch. However since it is close to the license plate where the gap in the bumper cover allows access to tighten the lock ring (barely), it also allows access to remove the lock ring, and thus the BUC.
The picture: is good in daylight, but at night the little IR lights inside the camera enclosure seem to reflect off the outer glass face and cause an obscuration near the center of the cameras field of view. The obscuration, along with the way the camera shifts to pick up light at night, make the video a real trip driving through town at night.

Here's a shot of the BUC about 20 minutes after sunset while sitting at a traffic light.

It's a trip driving around with the camera on. I think my next major mod might be a car PC...maybe just b/c I have the monitor to plug it into.

(Off topic, the Alpine head unit also displays my iPod menu on the touch screen, and the buttons control the iPod, which is tits. It's a decent head unit, but I have my gripes, like how it doesn't come with an EQ. The stock bass/treble tweaks are crappy, and you have to buy their surround sound eq (even if you don't need surround), and find a place to install the additional hardware; neither of which I have done yet.)

I have had both the bar type and the circular type back up camera, hooked up to my carputer. The bar type seemed to have better picutre quality and easier to install. I ran the wires up and under the car to a grommet in the spare tire well. To get the correct angle on the license plate cam I had to trim the housing a bit. Works great in certain situations, otherwise it's just a novelty.
