Question Band photography, tips and tricks?

I'm supposed to be taking some on-stage photos of my roommate's band to be used in some posters and stuff. Thing is I've never had too much luck with dark stage lit situations. I'm trying to capture the raw feel of the live performance and could use some tips from the kick ass photogs here. I'll be using a film camera since my digi isnt good in the dark.

Thanks for any advice...

I got some really cool shots with the digi of an ex's band at a show. crazy lighting plus long exposure (relatively) makes for some neat effects. Turn the flash off, delay it, play around with the exposures.

Long exposure is a key, steady hand.

If you're gonna go with a film camera, get fast film, and use your fastest lens (assuming you're using an SLR). Try to avoid using flash if you can, unless you want a particular effect.

I shot a band in pretty crappy lighting conditions -- went with Fuji NPZ-800, rated in the camera at ISO3200 and push-processed two stops. Shot with a Canon 50mm f/1.4 EF lens, between f/1.4 and f/2.8 @ 1/45-1/90th shutter speeds. Came out okie, but the lens gets a little soft when it's that far open:

Expect grain. Possibly expect some trouble focusing in low light.

Search on Idjiit and huckedup16's band photography threads, lots of great tips there.

no flash, and a steady hand is how i get my most interesting results...

or flash + a slower shutter speed ("night" mode on cheaper cameras usually gives you the same effect):

dunno, a couple stiff drinks to calm the nerves works wonders for me in avoiding the jitters when shooting without a flash. take a deep breath, release all your air, then *gently* click the shutter. all of the above were shot with a nikon coolpix 5700 in RAW mode. imagine what i could do with a REAL camera!

wow. you have steadier hands than I. Often I can't get images that stable using a monopod.

it took a LOT of practice, i used to go out and shoot bands 4 or 5 nights a week when i was single and had nothing better to do, at about 70-80 photos a night, just because i wanted to get good at being steady in low light. i highly reccommend utilizing any stationary objects as well, such as railings, edge of the stage, etc. to put your elbows up on and steady yourself.

also, being in good with all the venue owners here helps too, since if neccessary, i can just park my butt on one of the wings of the stage off to the side, prop my elbows up on my knees, and steady myself that way (only works if you have a healthy zoom lens).

i'm a minimalist kind of person, so carrying a monopod is out for me. i'm there to enjoy the show just like anyone else, and carrying a bunch of crap is a pain for me, and everyone else in the crowd you have to move through.
