Mismatched Tire Sizes
I just discovered today that I have mismatched tires on my wrx. 3 are the oem size 235 / 45 - 17 and one is 215 / 45 - 17. Circumference difference is 2.8%. I think the dealership locally might have screwed me over due to incompetence.
The tires are almost new and I got them for free from the dealer in March when I bought the car. I think there would have been 5 separate instances when someone should have looked over the tires if the error was made when I bought the car. To me it looks obvious that one of the tires doesn't look right. It looks stretched and the smaller tire has a significantly smaller sidewall. That's why I think the local dealership ripped me off. They are adamant it is not their fault. My question is, could I have damaged anything by driving ~60miles like this (or over 300 highway miles if the error was made when I got the tires)? I have ordered a new Michelin x-ice xi2 today and will not be driving car until I get it next week. $200 :-( Tldr: mismatched tires and wondering if I damaged anything by driving 60-300 miles like this. Ps. I please excuse any errors, I am drunk and on mobile.

Have you noticed any whining noise while driving? If you didn't hear any noises, and you check your trans and diff fluids and find nothing I would say you are good. Just keep an eye on it.

Don't forget to post the dealers name and location and any of their family locations so we can be sure not to buy a car from them ever. |

Didn't hear any strange noises while driving. It's the only subaru dealer in my area, shouldn't be hard to figure out which one. There was a reason I drove 2h to Madison to buy my car. Local dealer only occasionally has a used wrx or sti.

Update: I emailed the dealer I bought the car from. He distinctly remembers checking all 4 Michelin Snow tires and they were all the same size.

Update. I talked to the place I got the tires from, and since I got them under special circumstances, they distinctly remember them being all the same size. So I only drove a max of 60 miles on mismatched tires. In happier news I just got my replacement tire in and am going to go get it mounted it tomorrow.
I did notice the smaller tire had some smeared yellow new tire markings, so I am sure the local subaru dealership screwed up something. They offered me $75 because they didn't notice mismatched the tires were mismatched. I took the $75 since I don't think I will get anything better from them. I'm chalking this up to a lesson learned and never taking my car back there again for anything. |
