Angry To all the people who have the sti tranny and engine mounts.

I have no idea how you got the rear bolts (for the engine mounts) out. There were 3 of us working on these things, and none of us could loosen, or much less see those rear bolts for the engine. I tried everything I could think of, and quite a few of them weren't really practical (or safe ).
Anybody have any suggestions on how to take those god forsaken rear bolts out of the engine mounts without having to drop the cross member? (which is something I definitely want to avoid)
I really wanted those things in.

A) If you haven't spilled a little coolant, it's not jacked up far enough and
B) Find someone with small hands

I had the coolant hoses stretched to the MAX! Guess I'll have to make a real mess next time.
And the other two guys working do have small hands.
I was afraid of actually popping my right CV joint out of its socket. Should I be using ramps instead of hoisting the car off the ground to get under it (keep the suspension under load)? Then go at it?
Is it worth dropping my whole exhaust forward of the cat? ( I have Brullen headers and aftermarket exhaust) To give me more room. I mean I have to unbolt the headers anyways.
Looks like the tranny mount is a heck of a lot easier to do (room wise).
Guess I'll find out in our next exciting episode of....

"How in the heck did they do THAT?!"

Did the exact same thing.

I'd have to say probably THE BEST mod to do. Huge difference.

What did the dealer charge, if you don't mind telling & why is it the best mod?

I paid US$50 for the install (all the mounts). I work at a Subaru dealership though, so prices will vary...

Scott

BTW, not the "best" mod in my opinion, was noticable (and did what they are suppose to do), but in my opinion, my stage3 clutch and lightened flywheel were the "best" mod.

My tranny mount just arrived, I decided to pass on the engine mounts. What do you guys think of the idea of skipping the engine mounts and just going with tranny mount?

hahaha.. I did my tranny mount last week, and the engine mount yesterday.

What a PITA.

How did I do it?
rear bolts - used a box wrench and a 5 lb hammer, and on the passenger's side I came from up top. It was pretty easy, once I got in there. I've got a Cobb intake, so I just popped that out of the way. Using the hammer made it like an air wrench... lots of medium hits eventually broke it free. Keep in mind that there's not a lot of room to get crazy with the hammer.

Driver's side was more of a PITA - stupid stuff in the way. So I pulled the wheel/tire off and crawled under that way, body perpendicular to the car. In my right hand I had the box wrench, and a 6" metal bar (1/2" socket extension), in my left hand, the hammer. With even less room to swing, and more chances for smashing my flesh, it took a while longer, but eventually it came loose.

I spilled ~6-10 drops of coolant. Oh, and I didn't bleed at all.

At cruise there isn't much difference. At idle there's a lot more vibration through the whole car. At WOT, it sounds like a freakin mean bad @$$ machine ready to take off.

Would I do it again? hmmm. Tranny mount, yes. Motor mounts? Maybe.

I really am starting to feel like I should be autocrossing it with all of the stuff I'm putting into it. Or something.

I need to crawl back under and check all of the bolts tomorrow - when I start the motor it makes a banging sound, like something's loose.

Anybody know what the torque specs are for the bolts going into the aluminum?

Personally, I think that's the way to go, unless you're going for an all-out track car.

You did the driver's side from the top? I'm impressed. I've got some skinny ass wrists, but I couldn't get my hands through the snakepit of hoses over there.

Hahaha.

And when you put it all back together, don't forget to put the bolt back in the upper motor mount thingy, otherwise your engine might make a funny banging noise when you start it.

They're a lot harder.
1) the motor doesn't flex on the mounts as much, so power is not wasted fighting the rubber - more ends up going to the wheels
2) the tranny doesn't move around on you - chances of missing a shift decrease
3) makes your car loud as hell - sounds like a race car.

My understanding is reduced torque loss from the engine and transmission moving around a little too easily. The tranny mount is supposed to make shifting a little smoother and easier, especially when getting on it.

I'll bite ... why is it louder?

Is it because the engine & tranny are now mechanically tied hard to the frame/chassis? So the car body is now a "speaker" ... hmmm, I don't think that make sense, does it?

The factory mounts have softer rubber (or whatever it is) to deaden the sound and vibration. The STi mounts are really stiff, so the noise and vibration are more prevelant. In my opinion, they weren't alot noisier (but my car was already fairly loud)
