Default Total newb: At 6K miles turbo making rythmic/oscillating whine at 2K-2.5K RPM?

Title says it all.

So recently my 05 LGT has started to make this annoying sound while just driving about town.

Between 2K and 2.5K RPM the turbo (I assume it is the turbo) will start to make a rythmic/oscillating whining sound. Since this is the RPM range that in 4th gear equates to just driving about town it really annoys me. I've owned turbo charged cars before. I'm used to the sound when you step on it (I like the sound) but this oscillating whine is annoying.

Is this normal? Is it just a part of wear and tear?

Sound like you are hitting the surge line of the VF-40. If you are boosting well above stock you have too much boost for the flow .
Less boost or a bigger turbo like a 18g or 20g drop-in from Deadbolt. Surge is not good for the long term longevity of thge turbo.

Is the car stock? If yes take it to the local Subi dealership and and point it out for them. If they say "it is normal" take them for a ride on the new LGT if they do not hear it point it out to them.

Cheers

Yep, the car is 100% stock. I'm heading in this afternoon to help them hear it. Arg.

Welp, the mechanic couldn't hear a thing. Sure the sound can be quiet at times but it is there doing it's thing.

All the mechanics at the dealer are old guys so I assume they have somewhat impaired hearing at high frequencies so getting another one to ride along would serve no purpose.

My quest for a dude with decent hearing and the ability to work on cars marches on!

Isn't that a twin scroll turbo? I had twin scrolls on a Firebird TA a few years ago and they had some unusual harmonics that sounded like that. I could get it to stop by exerting some pressure on the pipes going into and out of the intercooler, while tightening everything up. But, it would come back again in a few months.

I am 99% sure that the Legacy GT does NOT have a twin-scroll.

It is not a twin-scroll turbo.
