Sell the house, put the fiance on the stroll and buy a GT-R. Life's short.

Hey, you wanted unbiased!

Oh! And I hope you do live to be 112.

I bought my house last year, then my '12 WRX shortly after that. Two very expensive decisions. Unless you're making good money, you'll have very little "leisure money" after your monthly mortgage, car, and insurance bills. You will probably need to adjust your lifestyle a bit / considerably.

You also just got engaged - unless you already have several tens(hundreds?) of thousands of dollarbucks in the bank reserved for your wedding, you better stay away from any car temptations. I did my proposal earlier this year, and will be getting married later at October, so I have a good idea of your current situation.

In case you don't already know -- weddings are stupid expensive. Whatever you think your budget is, be prepared to spend 2-3x times of that when you actually start planning and paying for things.

Then, there's also the honeymoon. Don't **** yourself/your marriage by cheaping out on your honeymoon.

My recommendation: focus on your house, your upcoming wedding and honeymoon. The cars will still be there next year, or the year after that.

(Unless you're one of those 28-year olds that have several hundreds of thousands of dollarbucks in the bank reserved for wedding, honeymoon, home improvement, etc)

Good home + Perfect Wedding + Perfect Honeymoon = Happy Wife = Happy Life

I'm 28, engaged, home owner. I daily drive a 410whp '05 STi... with a car seat. making a decision based on "growing up" is generally bad.

and if your finances can handle the switch, why not?

Good info, i'll have to look into those as well. A bit bigger than what i want, but we'll see. Gas mileage could be better, since i won't be driving those as hard, haha.

Feeling like a kid is what i want. My cubicle job and weekend get aways are not enough for the average me. A fun to drive car will certainly help those weekends come faster.

Ha. If i can afford a GT-R, there's a boat load of other cars i'd get. Too much euro influence on my end, but something about WRX's intrigue me. I think it's the growl despite it being a 4 banger.

Wanted to single out my response to this, thank you for the insight. You're right, we're almost in identical situations. You're also right in the fact that i don't have boat loads of money. Fortunately, the wedding is taken care of. All the realisms you put into perspective are what will ultimately affect my decision. Home improvements alone are going to be a headache (powerwashing, sanding, refinishing my deck this week)

The main reason i want a car like this is to help deal with the medocrity that is my life. Work, take care of my dog, eat, sleep, repeat. I miss the days of apartment living and making my car sleek and fast. Something about a car that you like to drive -- it calms you or gets you away from the stresses of life. Sounds cheesy, but that and playing hockey do that for me.

I would totally go for it and get 1. They are great cars, tons of fun to drive and if you dont wanna be racing around all you gotta do is drive slower. Its not the car thats driving fast its the driver driving it fast. lol

With that much down your payment would be around $450 on the STi.

Drive both, let her drive both, then decide. One more for good measure.

OP, just tell the dealership to de-badge the STI you want before you and the fiance get there. Problem solved.

And OP, don't listen to me. Don't let the dealership touch your car.

I sold my fast car when I got hitched also, That worked for about four months. I have had a fast car every since then (26 years). I say get what makes you happy but shop till you find one cheap. I loved my wagon and my forester xt.

Good luck not getting raped for a used. I would just trade it in for a wrx base for a good price of low 20's and not worry about what someone else did to it, or the crazy mark up.

Absolutely I think you should get what you want. Lifes too short to not enjoy it. How long do you spend in your car daily. Get what you want! And I really agree with this^^^
Buy a new base wrx. A lightly used one could be had for a whole 1000 dollars cheaper. Maybe just the market I'm in but I couldnt find a 2011 for less than 25k ish. I ended up buying my new one for 26300 with some extra options.

This.

33 here. I sold an 11 second mustang that I rarely drove to help finance my wrx. If I had to do it all over again I would.

I feel your pain, OP. I just turned 37 and have had my WRX wagon for two years now after my Civic was totalled by a drunk parolee. I've had fun/sporty cars before the Civic (rwd Celica, 93 MR2) and I dreaded getting in the Civic every day. That drunk parolee gave me a great gift and I'm so happy with my WRX.

If finances are agreeable, trade the sedan in on a WRX hatch. Insurance rates are reasonable for the hatch (FYI: my 07 WRX wagon is LESS to insure than a base 07 2.5 sedan) and then come back to this thread to post a pic of yourself smiling in the driver's seat.

Oh I understand that completely! It's pretty much the reason I got my '12 WRX instead of something far more economical.

As long as you do your due diligence in calculating your recurring expenses and leaving room for emergency expenses, then it's just a matter of how much disposable income you and your wife-to-be are willing to put into a depreciating asset. If you're both comfortable with losing disposable income to the monthly expenses of the WRX, then you picked the right woman you can now enjoy the WRX without any guilt

Just be very 100% honest with yourself. If you think there's even the slightest chance it can be a struggle, then it's probably wiser to suck it up for a few years and focus your disposable income on other "more important" things. Who knows, maybe you'll end liking the next-gen WRX better and/or you get a fat raise?

Driving is meant to be fun. I went from my 500hp Trans Am to an H3 Hummer. Talk about a switch. Sure, the H is great off road but I was missing something.

Bought a 2010 WRX last month and let the wife have the Hummer.

Ditto - getting back into the automotive world was he best thing I could have done to alleviate the mundane yet very demanding work work work life stresses.

Everyone is different of course. Haven't regretted the purchase once myself.

Drawback? I get to work much faster now.
