Full STi swap

Default 2002 STi wagon

I spent some time here lurking to trouble shoot a couple problems that came up during the swap, so I figured I would reciprocate and post up some information for the next swap guy.

As you can see in the pics I bought a wrecked (not totaled, drove into a ditch) 2006 STi and swapped everything into my 2002 WRX Wagon. It is pretty much just a WRX frame, with STi everything (minus the back seat). I swapped in all the wiring, ecu, suspension, brakes, hubs, engine, trans, dash, seats, door cards, etc, etc, etc (AVC and DCCD works). Oh yeah, TSX projectors are swapped into the EDMs with the STi ballasts and stuff.

Before people ask, I wanted a more unique STi wagon and not a cliche blue on gold STi. I spent 9k on the donor car and after I have sold all my WRX and STi parts the swap has cost me $1,200 TOTAL....and I am still selling parts. It was a lot of work, but wasn't quite so bad. It took me and a buddy 10 days to get the swap done in my garage.

ENJOY.

The "donor" car:

Reserved for tips....will update when I am not at work.

Almost forgot about this thread. I'll try and update this post as the questions continue to roll in or I think of little issues that came up in the swap.

-I would highly recommend getting a whole donor car if possible. Having all the small wires and pieces came in handy more times than I can imagine. You will need some odd parts; like gas tank bits, wipers, etc...that you may totally overlook when you try and piece an STi swap together.
-The STi control arms work fine and there is no rubbing (I didn't need to roll the fenders). They do push the track width out a little. I would be a little nervous if I wanted to put some lowering springs on it, but with the stock STi suspension it works fine.
-The door cards swapped in easily. I had to use the STi small metal brackets (that the screws go into), also on the rear door cards I had to steal the STi small white plastic piece that the plastic screw goes into (which is like right where the door jam thingy is)
-I just ended up swapping the whole gas tank, but you are going to need to get some sensors off the STi tank that the 02-03 do not have.
-You need to have the 06 STi front wiper motors (or change some wiring). The 06 STi molex connector plugs into the 02 wiper fine, but wiper will run nonstop. Which confused the hell out of me at first.
-I chose to rerun all the ABS hard-lines in the engine bay to the 06 STi ABS module, instead of bending the hardlines to plug into the module.
-If you want to use all the 06 Sti wiring, the 06 seatbelts do not plug into the 02-03 recepticles, plus the airbags are wired different (4 wires in the 06 passenger airbag/ 2 wires on the 02 airbag). Actually the majority of the SRS wiring is different. The SRS was the only part of the swap I did not enjoy.

-John

hmmm, did not think the door cards from the newage fit the wagons?

Looks great though! Good scoop on the donor!

edit: oh, and you should look for some wagon specific springs so the rear is not so saggy!

looks sick dude, nice work.

You do have a bit of saggy butt syndrome, but it's an easy fix, and isn't even really obvious. I want dccd

How much of the dash was really required to pull this off? I wouldn't mind doing this but actually like my 03 dash and am trying to think of ways to minimize downtime.

Wow, much respect for doing it yourself. What kind of shape are the STi fenders in? I need some for my '06 wagon...

Theres another STi(ish) wagon coming together in MAIC Except its an older wagon (97 obs), and its getting rhd. Goes on the chopping block on Monday. All STi bits everywhere except the rear bench, and the engine, which is an andrewtech hybrid special. Sadly, your cars paint looks 100 times better!

looks great man - but don't you need the sedan front fenders to accomodate the longer STi front axels?

mMMm camber

its actually not bad...
i ran 04 STi arms on my GM, and it fit fine. no need for wider or rolled fenders.

rears are a different story however.

I bought them from a local guy for $400, which was an awesome deal. Then I traded my 06 optics for some TSX projectors .

I'd imagine it wouldn't be that hard to use the 06 wiring with the 03 dash. You will have to do some wiring and stuff to change connectors and what-not. I had to take both the dashes out of the cars to get to all the wiring, so I figured it would just be easier to put the 06 dash in that reinstall the 02 dash and modify the wiring. There may be little issues like all the vents in the 06 dash are control'ed by motors, vs the wire operated ones in the 02-03. I also did the swap cause all my guages wiring kept on interfereing with my vent controls (some times I had to pop off my clock guage cluster to get me vents to switch to defogger, lol.

Brilliant! Was just musing to myself that what I am really trying to do with all my upgrades is get an STi Wagon. Searched site for STi => wagon conversions and bingo! Subscribed.

This is a total newbie question, but how does one acquire a "lightly-rolled" STi?
