you're an engineer, you know all the spherical bearings are not rated for the kind of loads that a wall will put them through. and you can't do the fast transitions real drift cars do without them. the rubber in the bushings on redRS are what saved it, and also what keep everything it does in slow motion. either your'e trolling, or didn't put a few things together:
a standard Com10 spherical bearings are rated at ~ 20k lbs static radial and aurora rates them at 20% that in axial loading. and that's all static. rod ends are easily half that. so it's really easy to destroy them with a wall that makes deceleration loads instant. 10G of decel? that's easy. everything needs no deflection to transition and have control like the pros do. oh and com10 is huge, it's basically what everyone uses on the strut tops, the ones used on suspension bits are much smaller. the wheel falling away is a bending struts vs popping bearings apart, and struts are great for keeping the suspension together, and why they're used in rally racing where camber control isn't as important(at all maybe?) as keeping the car on 4 wheels not 2 or 3 under any abuse. redRS was allll bent up, everything. rally car style. still rollin. to me it looks like something drivetrain failed, handbrake didn't unlock, etc in that vid(ej25, go figure) and the driver couldn't do anything about it as he had committed.

not trolling just never looked at the rated specs of spherical bearings. so why do the STI lateral links from Subaru use spherical bearings?

First autox at north park today, waited to long to get car ready. Spent all yesterday trying to do a corner balance which was littered with problems and I'm no better off then when I started. But the car is functional. |

Anybody see the homestead auto complex groupon today? I'm curious if this place is any good or if anyone has been there.

i'm pretty sure if you read your quote, it answers what you asked, which i already answered, before you asked. same answer to: why do FDs use them stock? and why in some places do evos use them? and even 08+ rear subaru suspension has some. why aren't tie rods ends made of rubber? cmon son. increase your buckset. still think you're trolling.

Maybe I'm way off-base here but I would've thought they would rather have a car that crosses the finish line than DNF because their suspension links fractured instead of bending when the car hit a huge rock. |

gatdamn. it's a coherent two part statement that you didn't put together, even after i layed it out for you like your mom does your clothes every day:
part A: it has spherical bearings, and they are more fragile in shock loading than rubber bushings. part B: it's multilink not struts. multilink setups don't handle abuse and bend out of the way like struts do, especially with spherical bearing weakness in a crash as outlined in partA, even if you didn't know that, which is why it's prefacing this one. you can't take part of it away, and argue the other bit. the whole struts vs multilink. maybe you missed it but subarus since 2008 have had a non-strut rear suspension geometry. including the BRZ/FRS. and that's not a rally type suspension. sorry i'd assumed you knew that. also those joints don't see much rotation, and it's almost all planar, so poly bushings are almost as good in the trailing arm spots, as well as the lateral links. i dont' like rod ends in most any situation(spherical bearings in a fabricated housing are much more stable and durable, like the sti bits), which is probably what failed on impact, as outlined in partA, the axial load rating on them is pathetic, and they're almost always used improperly: in bending. should i stop calling you on things and start calling Pitt's engineering program out? |

LOL @ supersmart guys fight
I must say I respect you both as well as a bunch of others that post here. Most folks that know me think I am pretty smart. Got some number on a paper from a test I took that says that too. Around here I am mediocre |

rod ends don't fail...
the proper use of rod-end washers will keep it from failing catastrophically though. Didn't know this was broken until after the race |

Jason, is it that time of the month for you again? You started this entire discussion with a personal attack and now you are running your mouth against Pitt's engineering program? Good form!
But yeah, I didn't learn anything about suspension design at Pitt. Wish they had an automotive option like a lot of other schools do. **************************** As far as I know, you are the only person I know of who managed to blow up an NA Subaru (other than Krepley) because you failed to understand principles of fluid viscosity, temperature, and flow rate. What should I blame this on? How personal should I get? **************************** Bettner, did you get my email after I looked at your logs? Your car knocked at peak power on the 23psi map. Boost was only around 19psi at the time, around 6500 RPM or so. I would tune that out if I was you... |

guess it is that time of the month for me. that time every month you disappoint me..
its' not automotive specific, it's just basic using your brain.. |

Anyone interested in buying my STi? I'm not 100% sure if I want to sell it or not yet. PM me for details. Mostly everyone here can vouch for how clean it is.

Going fishing eh?
V8 Mustang or Camaro with some tasteful mods. And budget some money aside for careless driving tickets so you can let the rear end step out when she rides shotgun while on a date. Guaranteed to work or your money back! Also, cops usually give domestic sports cars way less tickets. If the engine is supercharged, you could probably even do a pull to 120 right past a cop in a Marauder and all he'll do is burst-fire the lights and stay put. |
