Default New England Forest Rally 2013 Volunteers needed

If you've ever seen rally racing on youtube, video games, or TV, and thought "how can I do that?", this is the thread for you. Volunteering at a rally is the best way to get started in the sport (don't take my word for it), and on top of that it's the best way to see a rally if you've never been to one before. Regular spectators are corralled into a few small viewing areas, and only get to see some of the stages. As a volunteer, you will actually be part of the rally, and you'll get an inside view of everything that goes on. When you are working, you will have a behind-the-scenes view of what goes into putting on a rally. When you are not working, you will be able to put your insider's knowledge to use and scope out the best places to watch the action.

Here's what you can expect, based on my 3 years of volunteering as a spectator marshal:

Thursday (optional) - arrive, register, help set up stages and planning

Friday
7-9am - arrive and register. Receive your free shirt and some souvenirs, a safety vest and a wrist band.
9am - workers meeting. Go over the basics of how rally works and what is expected of volunteers
~10am - head out to first stage. Receive your job assignment and location. For a spectator marshal this means you will be positioned at a point where spectators are expected to stand. Your job is to make sure they stand in a safe spot and don't interfere with the rally.
10am-7pm - move from stage to stage, ahead of the rally cars, ensuring that the spectators are under control and in safe spots before the stage opens
9-10pm - return from final stage

Saturday
~7am - leave for first stage
7am-8pm - mostly a repeat of Friday, travelling to different stages and making sure the spectators are under control. At the end of the day there are usually a few stages where you don't need to work and can find a good spot to watch from.
8pm-Sunday - awards ceremony at Sunday River, workers party, winding down

Sunday - head home

There is usually discount pricing from sunday river for the event. Bring bug spray, sun screen, an ezup if you have one, camera. I cant think of much else. Pack lots of water as youll be outside all day and remember to stay hydrated and find shade. Have fun!

If you don't mind staying in a dorm room with 8 other guys there are usually some rooms available for the volunteer groups. Once it gets closer to the event you'll probably get an email with your work assignment and some more information about lodging. For the past 2 years I have stayed in the dorm lodging which was free. The first year I just slept in my car, which was surprisingly comfortable.

Definitely bring those things aceyduce said. Also a bandana or some kind of dust mask isn't a bad idea as it gets really, really dusty (also, don't leave your windows down when you park). I usually bring a folding chair and magazine in case there's downtime. Also pack a bathing suit, our group stops at a swimming hole on the way home and it's just the thing after standing around in the sun for 2 days.

I also try to go onto the competitor area of the website and print out the stage maps and schedule. The spectator guide has some of the stages but not all of them. On the competitor site there is usually a document which has overview maps of all the stages, and the time they are being run. It really comes in handy. There isn't anything posted yet but they should be adding more as it gets closer.

My buddy and I are coming from PA to help out. We were at the rally in Wellsboro, PA earlier this month. It's a great time, I had alot of fun and met cool people. Got to take my car on the course as well so that was cool. We got a nine hour drive so no excuse if you live nearby to not go.

And I heard of the Wellsboro Rallies but never had a chance to go. I'm sure this will make up for it.

Thinking about volunteering. Do you know when they will have stage maps avail for download. Assuming same stages as previous years in listed sponsor locations: concord pond, icicle, Stuart pond?

All signed up to work with my Fiance again this year. Had a blast working on Marks crew last year doing Concord Pond. Went much smoother at the earlier time, but didn't have quite the same magic as years past. Hopefully attendance will be up on concord this year now that people are aware of the time change. Just dont get as drunk as in the past please!

With a week to go we could still use more volunteers (especially HAM operators).

You know the drill, you get front row seats to the action (instead of being corralled in spectator areas) and free stuff with the chance to win even more cool stuff , and you help make it possible for other to play. For those of you that are thinking about making the step-up to stage rallying some day, this is a great opportunity to see what goes on. Also, without the volunteers, there wouldn't be events for people to compete in , so if you want something to step-up to...

But seriously, if you can help, or if you were just planning on going to spectate, please consider volunteering, the sign-up form is here:
http://www.newenglandforestrally.com.../sign-up-form/

Thanks!
Matt Kennedy
NEFR Chief of Controls

P.S. I'm working on getting all the documents/maps/etc. finished and hopefully posted to the web site in the next couple of days.

I wish I could help, I'm going with the Wife and 4 kids as a spectator because of this thread, maybe when the kids are older I can be a volunteer.

I can has to go to new jerb orientation, so I can't go. You want to watch cars go by fast, go block a road, you want to learn the backside of codriving, work a control. You want people to respect your authoritay, work a spectator section.

They need help. And I'll paypal you 1 dollah if you wear a NASA rally sport shirt to your work assignment.

Can you travel independently to your station(s), or do you travel with a group of volunteers?

Usually a caravan. IF THEY KNOW YOU WELL and KNOW YOU KNOW WHERE you're going, sometimes you can just say, "see you at" XXX, but generally, no. Basically, have you been at the rally for 10 years or more? Have you entered the rally several times? If you can answer yes to both of these, you may be able to go straight to your assignment. Otherwise, NO.

The above advice comes from somebody who isn't going to the rally and serves in absolutely zero official capacity with NEFR, other than to occasionally annoy them. So take this post for what it's worth (not much).

You can usually meet with the rest of your team at the stage, as long as you arrange it with your stage captain in advance. Some captains may want you to caravan with everyone, especially if you're relatively new to the event. Believe it or not, people have gotten lost even when caravaning!!!

That being said, I've had several people that had signed up contact me in the last two days to tell me that they can't make it now, so we really could use more volunteers!!!

Did they move all this (stage maps, etc) to restricted access on rally america?

Have last years at least.

I'm signed up as a volunteer for a road marshal and was wondering, do we marshal every single stage or are there alternating crews? I would assume that we follow the sweep crew in, do our jobs, follow the sweep crew out and head to the next stage, but I've never volunteered before so I'm not exactly sure.

I would love to be on every single stage, thats one of the main reasons I signed up to help out, so that I could see everything and be a part of the action as opposed to only seeing a few stages by bus. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks for signing up!

Unfortunately, there is no way to see action on every stage. The only people that actually get to see every stage are either driving through before or after all the competitors, but never actually get to see the cars at speed. (Sweep, by definition, follows at the back, after all the cars have run each stage, to pull out people that stuff it.)

That being said, volunteering is the best way to see the action up close, in spaces that you can't get to on the bus (plus you get free stuff ). Between Friday and Saturday, each team gets to see the cars on stage 4 times.

See you in a few days!

Matt
