Default X-Brand Tire Weight Vs. RE92 Weight

Going to shed these RE92's with 8K on em, not sure what the factory 205 55 16 tire weighs but I want to go with something like a 215 45 16 to replce it or a close size to that that will fit the stock wheel, whats the lightest tire out there now? and how much lighter is it than the RE92? Thanks, I am leaning twords the RE730 or the Kuhmo Esctas, any numbers on these? Thanks!

Dave

Why would you want to know the weight of the tires?

ITRGUY,

There haven't been a lot of discussions of tire weight on this board. I suspect you're more clued in than the average I-Club guy when it come to this topic. That said, I wish more people would post weights, if possible - I just did myself under "P1/SO-2 weights measured" in this forum.

Blindeye_03 - Being concerned with wheel weight w/o even considering tire weight is kinda half the picture - wouldn't you think? Many here think that having a nice fat tire w/lots of contact patch is "better" than a smaller tire - sorry to say this isn't true, particularly if you don't have the power to negate the weight. Besides being unsprung mass in your suspension, it's also rotating mass at the outside diameter of the wheel.

You better believe it matters.

I recall reading somewhere that for every pound of unsprung weight (tires, wheels etc.) that you take off is like removing 3-5lbs from somewhere else in the car. So if you switched to some really light rims and tires and saved 10lbs a corner, it would be like saving 120lbs-200lbs.

i just switched from the RE92's to BFG GForce KDW in a 215/50-16. The combo weighed 2 more lbs per wheel than the RE92's. Both on stock MY '01 wheels. However, they are slightly smaller in rolling diameter, so I do not notice a loss in acceleration. Handeling is greatly improved, more predictable, and road noise is not noticably higher.

The 215/45-16 will throw you speedo 5% off, and make for more shifting. The 215/50-16 is around 1% off.

Not apples to apples due to the diffrent sizes, but hope this helps.

Josh
