This is Subie #3 for me, an 02 WRX wagon. My first Subaru was an 05 WRX that I bought new but was totaled a couple of years later. Then I bought an 07 STi in Jan 2007 which is now heavily modified and I still drive it at least once a week. Got this wagon yesterday 02/04/17 with 153,xxx miles on it. It was an early build 02 being assembled in 03/2001 and being purchased in 10/2001 . The seller bought it from the original owner with roughly 100,000 miles on it and he inherited all the original service records which he passed to me. Interesting stuff in there. It's been a Southern car its whole life which means it has no rust on the body or the undercarriage
The car came with a few mods: STi intercooler (a big + for me for the future build) Kartboy short shifter (I'm neutral on this) SPT intake (the car has never been tuned) The painted side skirts JDM hood scoop. Autometer boost gauge Issues and potential issues include a high mileage engine and tranny but there are no obvious current problems except some notchiness of 1st and reverse which I could explain by the tranny fluid. It was fairly recently changed with Extra-S at a Subaru dealer which means it's the new Extra-S formulation which for the older cars doesn't seem to jive well. I'll change it soon with the cocktail. The larger pending problem is an A/C issue (it was disclosed in the sale ad) which has plagued the car for many years based on the service history. This will likely be pricey. The suspension is completely stock but actually feels pretty decent for its age and the fact that it is an WRX and has the OE 16" wheels and wears all-season tires (albeit brand new ones). The good it comes with is an excellent service history by it's past two owners, a full clutch assembly, slave cylinder and master cylinder replacement about 30K miles ago, and newly rebuilt rear calipers with new pads all around. Mechanically it feels solid currently for daily driving though I also have a 2008 Honda Fit with 240K miles which has been bullet proof that I also rely on for driving hither and yon. After long deliberation I had decided instead of buying a new car I would keep the Fit and buy this wagon which I always wanted and gradually mod it to suit my DD tastes. It wont be long before it gets hot here so I'll be addressing the A/C issue straight away. I'd already ordered some suspension stuff before the deal was complete no less . EDIT 04/08/18:This past December after the Fit had several issues consecutively, I bought a 2018 Civic Si for a DD which slowed the pace for modifications for a time First mods will be suspension and driveline to include full Group N driveline bushings, full Group N/STI suspension bushings, SPT pink wagon springs, Koni inserts into the OE struts and other assorted pieces. I'd like to pick up a carbon fiber driveshaft and lightweight flywheel along the way. Eventually I'll do the FHI 4 pot/2 pot conversion, 17" wheels and Michelin PSS tires. Because it's me I'll be doing some weight reduction items on the front end of the car. Assuming the engine and tranny hold out until 200K I'd like to do a low 300 whp build on the 205. YES.....keep the GD's alive I look forward to more posts in here.
Hey if you have the 07 STI front springs still around you can use them on this wagon and only have to buy new SPT wagon rear springs. The fronts are the same rates and ride height. I did that on my Forester to save some cash and it worked well. |

From one 2002 original bug-eye sedan owner (took delivery of mine 6/2001) to another - congrats. I'm a little over 500 miles shy of 200K - getting ready for the big moment.
You mention that the previous owner had Extra-S put into the transmission at the last service. I've been running Extra-S that I bought back in 2010 (original formulation) in mine with excellent results. Regarding your comment about the newer formulation, I think now called "Extra" instead of "Extra-S", not being as good for our older models, how is the shifting quality? I'm actually almost at 72K miles on my last Extra-S fill-up and she's still shifting quite good. I've been struggling to find Extra-S anywhere and one of my local dealers claims they can order the 5-gallon pail of new Extra. I'm debating, though, whether this newer formulation is as good as the old stuff. It's shown as being 75w80 instead of 75w90. |

Nice wagon man, I'm digging the white. Love my wagon! How do you like that SPT intake in terms of sound?

Honestly the sounds from under the hood are a little strange. I can hear the intake but it is muffled and the engine feels a bit asthmatic to me. Granted it's been 12 years since I've driven a stock 2.0 but it feels like it's not getting enough air. I'm going to inspect everything really well this weekend and clean what needs cleaning and change what needs changing. |

So I started thinking about why the engine might feel restricted and I began remembering the way Subaru has these cars set up from the factory that has long been eliminated from my STi. Things like the crappy stock turbo inlet and the PCV system that routes all blowby through the inlet, turbo, intercooler, intake manifold and back into the engine
When I got home from work I took a look around and found longstanding oil residue where the inlet is clamped to the turbo, around the hose where the crankcase vent is and under the intake manifold where the PCV valve is screwed in on these old models. I'm betting the PCV valve is boinked and the crankcase is not properly venting. I have some extra catch cans lying around and I bet I could set up a quickee system this weekend hopefully. Oh yeah, the air filter is dirty too. Not driving it until I get all this looked at and squared away. I'll try to get pics as I go of the process. |

Stock, catted Up pipe still?? That'd choke 'er.
But yeah, change PCV (PITA), replace MAF and plugs, and front O2. Clean the Boost solenoid, better: replace it and all hoses. |

I have a totally runnable helix up-pipe available that would literally be a "period piece" for that car. Oh, the winter of 03-04....

Tranny cocktail (done today) and the SPT wagon pinks (going on later):
Miniature mountains of steel found on tranny drain plug: And the oil change (was a quart low): Found small amount of fairly fresh oil on the bottom of the old filter but the filter wasn't on very tightly at all. There was a decent amount of old oil under the front cover, on top of the OEM oil cooler and on the front face of the pan. No fresh oil in those places but a goodly amount of oil residue on the crossmember and a bit on the axles which I suspect was left over from when the head gaskets were leaking. They aren't now. Cleaned up enough to identify any active fluid leaks if they are there after driving again. In addition to the oil change and tranny fluid change, I took off the intercooler and found a streak of heavy crude in the turbo compressor outlet and the silicone elbow attached. No trace of oil in the outlet of the intercooler and just a minor smudge in the throttle body coupler. I haven't taken off the Y pipe yet. More fun tomorrow including PCV inspection and likely setting up a catch can with PCV delete. I want a Recaro Specialist seat and these headlights http://blackflamecustoms.com/product...rofit-package/ Last edited by A-man07; 07-15-2017 at 08:15 AM. |

I cleaned the MAF, it was quite dirty, as well as changed the air filter on the SPT intake and cleaned a fair amount of thick, sticky, black oil out of the Y pipe. Spent several hours futzing with the hoses on the PCV system as the rubber had basically turned to very hard, brittle plastic. The big BOV hose was getting hard and inflexible as well so I couldn't really fold it back to easily get to the PCV on the IM and it's little hose. Took a long while and steely determination to not blow my own gasket but I managed to get a catch can hooked up to the crankcase breather. There is not one speck of damn room under the hood of an 02. The gigantic cruise control module and the extra hardware of the throttle cables are a PITA. Also looks as if I'll need to do the turbo inlet. When I tested the clamp on it at the turbo it was a bit loose but also the clamp appears to have made a circumferential crack in the inlet. Oh well more time to for bonding Quote:
Edit: just took it for a drive and now it feels like it should for a stock TD04. Very nice. Likely the biggest issue was the dirty MAF. Last edited by A-man07; 02-11-2017 at 04:18 PM. |

I had some of these solid aluminum outrigger bushings made several years ago for my STi and have some leftover. I put them on my wagon today but they transmit too much gear noise, much louder then the STi for some reason. I believe I have some Kartboy urethane bushings from a ways back and I'll try those. I suppose I could look at getting the Grp N outriggers from RalliSpec but it would be difficult for me to get these mounted as I don't have a press.
Hard to believe this is a 15 year old car with 153K miles: I feel sorry for you guys in the Northeast. Last edited by A-man07; 07-15-2017 at 06:23 AM. |

Do you have a side picture of the "drop" with the pink springs?
I'm looking at raising mine up and stiffening it for autox. My current Epic Engineering ones aren't cutting it. |

I don't have the pinks installed. If you look in the suspension forum the thread "show me your wagon setup" or something like that goes back to 2002 where there are plenty of pics with the pinks.

That is a pretty clean underside. The Midwest isn't too kind either.
If it helps, I installed the GpN front diff mount (AKA outrigger) bushings recently ST4130055010 (LHS) and ST413224S030 (RHS-taller than LHS). P/n's are not USDM so source accordingly. The install was somewhat irritating. Specifically getting the older bushings out and pressing in ST413224S030 with the tools i had available. ST413005500 went in a bit easier. They are indeed firmer than the OEM bushings which is good. I still hear a fair amount of noise using them though. I don't think we can get around the noise/hardness trade-off. I'm hanging onto my WL poly spacers in case I feel the need to re-install them after these GpN bushings break in. Keep up the good work. |
