You just need to remember some are cable and some are hydraulic.... I believe up to 00-01 is cable... (My old tranny in the rally car was a cable, out of a 2000RS)

Well, you also have to make sure the tranny you get has a 4:11 final drive ratio or else swap your 4:11 into the new tranny. And if you use a WRX tranny and do that make sure you use the center diff from your RS tranny because the WRX uses a 1.1:1 transfer gear ratio instead of the 1:1 in the RS. Of course, you would have to comvert to hydraulic clutch to use the WRX transmission.

My '00 RS has a hydraulic clutch. Interchange manual the the salvage yards use only lists '99-'01 2.5RS and '99 Legacy GT (2.5) as direct swaps. '99 Forester has 4.11 but is not listed as a fit. Not sure why. Looking for a low mileage 5mt for my '00 RS now.

That page you linked to is about Limited Slips, and swapping out the rear differential, not trannys. That page has no info on the compatibility/interchangeability of 98-99 legacy transmissions.
