Yourself with the proper tools and no lift should be able to do it in about 2-3 hours.
You will need a pile of metric sockets jacks and jackstands. Jack it up, pull a tire off. Pull the long bolt from under the hub out. It's about 12" long and goes front to rear, it holds the rear suspension to the bottom suspension arms. I found it easier to drop the entire rear suspension assembly. You may need to remove the exhaust from the midpipe back. Pull the plug from the diff and drain it. Unbolt the guard from the diff and unbolt the driveshaft and let it hang down. Remove the 2 bolts on the rear assembly. Remove the rest of the bolts holding the diff on the assembly (4 on the bottom). Pull the suspension you removed the longbolt from out from the car. This will pull the driveshaft from the diff on one side. It's a snap in affair so it may take some rubber hammer tapping. Push the diff forward to clear the 2 bolts on the top rear from the rear suspension assembly. It will fall down and you will have to give it a few taps to get the other rear axle out. Installation is the reverse of this, but make sure you snap in the axles properly otherwise they're going to leak and they won't be engaging the LSD unit inside the diff. So as you can see it's not so simple, but not impossible. -Michael |

Okami, doesn't your forester have an LSD as standard? Mine does.
