Default Audi A4 Only AWD Sedan in Its Class to Offer a Manual Transmission

Quote:
Audi Presses all the Right Enthusiast Buttons with A4 Manual

Not only will Audi be the only luxury manufacturer offering a manual sedan with standard all-wheel-drive in the A4’s competitive segment, but its transmission will also weigh 35 lb less and get you to 60 mph 0.7 seconds faster than the previous version.

That’s because the new six-speed transmission has been redesigned to eschew the shaft to the front-axle differential used on previous models in favor of a spur-gear stage.

More than 35 lbs have been shaved off with the extensive use of magnesium, open gearwheels, hollow shafts, and a smaller clutch.

Audi is also making use of lightweight technology throughout the A4, to help get the curb weight down. The new quattro system weighs 8.8 lbs less than the previous model’s and gives better steering precision.

An exclusive “Sport plus package” is also available for the A4 quattro manual. It comes with flow formed cast aluminum 18” five-double-spoke-star design wheels, available Daytona Gray exterior paint, S line leather/Alcantara interior, a flat-bottom steering wheel, Audi’s dynamic steering and sport adaptive suspension, and more.

Prices start at $39,400 for the premium trim and rise to $48,000 for prestige trim. The 2017 A4 quattro manual goes on sale in fall of 2016.

If your in the market for an Audi A4 Manual just remember this little hidden info. If you get the Manual A4 you also get stuck with the new Ultra crap system. Go for dual clutch you get real Quattro that goes for S models to

Powerful and efficient, the A5 Coupe models are equipped with a 2.0-liter TFSI® four-cylinder engine, coupled with either a seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission, to produce 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds for the S tronic and 5.7 seconds for the manual.

The S5 Coupe models receive a completely new 3.0 TFSI V6 engine that produces an impressive 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The 2018 S5 is also newly equipped with an eight-speed Tiptronic® automatic transmission that is well suited for the low-end torque of the new 3.0-liter TFSI engine.

Every Audi A5 is standard-equipped with quattro® all-wheel drive, offering enhanced agility through electronic torque vectoring. A5 models equipped with the S tronic® transmission and S5 models with the Tiptronic® automatic transmission command drive torque through a self-locking center differential, with a basic ratio of 40:60 front to rear, and wheel-selective torque control.

New for 2018, A5 models equipped with the six-speed manual offer the new quattro® with ultra® technology. The technology utilizes an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch along with a decoupling rear axle differential to achieve fully variable torque distribution. This quattro system with ultra technology allows for intelligent, proactive control of the all-wheel drive system to help predictively modify the torque application as the driver demands or the road conditions require.

As part of the S sport package, the S5 with quattro® sport differential can offer an even more dynamic driving experience by actively spliting torque between the wheels of the rear axle, with the ability to direct nearly all torque to one wheel, helping maximize driving dynamics.

The S models dropped the dual clutch in favor of a plain 8-speed auto. Does that mean a manual S model doesn't get Quattro? The article isn't really clear on that point. The part about the manual getting the more basic FWD-based system seems only directed to the A5. Doesn't mention what the manual S gets.

Not sure if I understand your question but There is no Manual for the S5 and S4 models only the 8 speed automatic and they get the traditional Quattro system.

The A4 and A5 get the Seven speed dual clutch or the Manual. Audi stated the first year models coming to NA would have the Quattro, crown gear, etc. But now their saying the Manual A5 A4 coming to NA will have the new ultra Quattro system. The seven speed dual clutch for now will have the old version Quattro system.

It's nice but $40k is way more than I'd spend on a car.

Well, there's the used market to consider. But more generally, even something like a WRX is $30k now. Cars are simply getting expensive.

hell yeah they're expensive. Why do you think we've got so many 7 year loans now? It's just pushing us towards the car-as-on-demand-service model when autonomous vehicles get here. Why be in debt up to your eyeballs when you can get a robot Uber Pool?

Because,

Oh I don't know, you actually enjoy driving?

Perhaps the future will be filled with convenience filled soulless box on wheels for those who do not care about cars, and those who want to drive will still have a choice.

Take music as an example. An industry totally transformed in the last 15 years. Most people stream music or listen to MP3's. But hardcore people listen to music on Vinyl with vacuum tube amps (or they make their own music live I suppose). Both categories are filled with people getting what they want.

Since cars are heading toward the very unfortunate path of being a rolling tech studio with wheels, instead of a driving passion to explore the road in a fine automobile you can bond with, I see this type of dichotomy existing. Humans want to be lazy. If self driving cars happen the lazy and inattentive will want that as it is less they actually have to do. But their will always be people who like he feel of a steering wheel in their hands. Interesting times we live in.

In another decade that will be the average price for a car ($33.6k currently).

Electric steering, for example.
Was this a necessity?
More efficient from the engineering standpoint. I've not read one article that praised it. But editors have said that some do a good job of mimicking road feel.

I'm agreeing with SCRAPPY.
More technology equals less soul.

That being said, we all know that automatic transmissions are pretty phenomenal now. And they mimic manual rev-matching downshifts.
This is a welcome feature.

The impetus for electric steering is probably autobrake and, down the line, autopilot systems. The slight efficiency benefit is likely ancillary, pun intended.

Yes. It's a Haldex type system with FWD unless slip is predicted or detected, only for longitudinal engine mount applications.

It is their version of Subaru's ActiveAWD system or whatever SOA is calling it this year. FWD, clutch to the rear.

Peace,

The traditional Quattro system is cool but that front driveshaft and that crown geared front diff are heavy; that weight corrupts steering / steering feel.
Seems like that "ultra" system brings back some steering feel because there's less weight over the front axle.
So, IMO, it's not all that bad; better weight distro is a good thing.

If we learned anything from the Focus RS thread, it's that the system hardware is one thing, but these days, it's how it's programmed that makes a difference.

Isn't Ultra just Haldex 5, which is used in the Golf R?

People bitch because it isn't pure AWD when 90% of the drivers won't ever know the difference.

Amen. Its just that the programmers can make different wheels spin at different rates with a differential of some sort in the center. Which is the holy grail of control.

Most people will never know or feel it so does it really matter?

True and most don't know anything about what's going on under the hood or floor board, doesn't justify replacing heritage of a Brand and what made said brand. It's all about two things with all cars now. Getting Co2 down with fossil fuel consumption and making cars autonomous. I dislike when an Audi rep/ engineer high up the food chain with all accurate facts looks in your eyes and lies. It's waste of my time and yours. Stating the the 7 speed dual clutch could not handle the increased torque of the new Turbo set up on the new S4, S5, and Sport Back. But they know most poeople as mentioned earlier don't know much about cars including the writers these days. But some of us know the same dual clutch is used in the S7 with 450 ft/ torque. Opps bull****ted before thinking. So then they had to come clean. The S5 S4 will Automatics because the Manual and Dual clutch will not synchronize up all the crap needed for Autonomous Vehicles, not that the take on the Manual isn't there or greater torque. But that's bull **** too, because other manufactures can make Autonomous Cars with manuals but it takes time, work and God for bid ex coin.

As far as the ultra system, Yes most of the time most people don't know what's going on, that there going down the road in FWD in their AWD car. I don't want all my torque going to the front at 55 mph, I don't want to hit a button to lock the diff to get AWD to get out my snow covered driveway to have it go off on it's own because I hit 25 mph. I don't want my AWD System synchronized with a satellite so it can turn on AWD because there is a sharp turn coming up, maybe in that turn I want slam to on the emergency brake go off the pavement onto a dirt road fish tailing in the gravel. Can you predict that thru my navigation system to a satellite. Of course that whole crap system will cost you 60 bucks a month , can't get it singular Noop it will be combined with Nav. xm, Audi car service, yada yada yada.. Maybe I want to flash my A4, or up grade my Turbo, lower the height by spring upgrade etc. Guess what NO Go. Because Ultra Quattro can't handle the extra power. That's why RS models won't use it. maybe I want a Manual Audi that when I start out on clean dry asphalt it has 40/60 split or 90 going to the rear, or what ever. Oh well rant over
