V8 6 speed into 1998 OBS questions
I'm about to install the 6 speed into my 98 OBS and would like to know run through a list of items to find out what else I will need prior to tearing the car down to find out I'm missing something.
The facts: Car: 98 OBS 5 speed, completely stock w/ 3.9 ring and pinion in the rear differential according to info I found on Nasioc for stock 98 2.2l 5 speed Imprezas. Transmission: JDM V8 6 speed 3.9 ratio and w/ 6 speed tranny mount Driveshaft: V8 6 speed driveshaft Clutch: Stock V8 that came with the tranny Flywheel: Stock V8 that came with the tranny Pilot Bearing: Stock V8 that came with the tranny Release Bearing: Stock V8 that came with the tranny Front Axles: Stock WRX with the female ends (tranny has the stubs) Front Hubs: Stock WRX From what I've read around here I'll need 4 quarts of tranny fluid. It also appears fluid brand is highly debated so we'll skip that portion of this discussion. We'll also skip DCCD discussion as I will be installing an aftermarket DCCD controller at a later date. I believe the parts listed are the heavy hitter parts I will need to install this into the car. I intend to install JUST these parts for the purpose of getting the 6 speed into the car, functionally running. (I have all of the remaining STi driveline parts short of the calipers and rotors which I am still undecided on, so the rest of the parts will be installed later.) The clutch and flywheel appear to be in functional condition to get me down the road. I will probably be replacing the input bearing and release bearing. 1) Will the 98 OBS starter bolt on to the 6 speed transmission and will it function correctly with the 6 speed flywheel or will I need to source a starter from a WRX? 2) Will the factory clutch slave cylinder bolt up to the 6 speed and function properly? 3) Is the factory 98 OBS pitch stop mount the same length and a direct bolt in when using the 6 speed? 4) I'm currently looking through the commonly known online wiring diagrams for the 6 speed as well as for the 98 OBS to see what I'm looking at for wiring. What else am I missing?

You will need the STi shift linkage. Its a different length and has the reverse lock out.

The 98 OBS is a cable clutch. You will need a hydraulic pedal box .

The starter should bolt right up and work fine with the STi flywheel. I think I have an STi starter in my 5-speed RSTi.

back up top
I've purchased a pedal box and clutch master cylinder assembly so I should be back on track.
Are there any electronics surprises I should be planning for? Does anyone else have anything to offer? Any tips? Tricks for hoisting that large tranny up into the car? |

i was gonna say impreza based chassis, and that'd kinda exclude the leggy, but didn't for some reason. anything with 2.5's seems to have hydro clutch and cable for 1.8/2.2l. but im aware of the leggy being hydro.
