Default H6 rear upgrade.....worth it??

I have a wagon with soon to be installed Sti brembos up front. I was looking to balance out the rear with the H6 upgrade but the difference seems so small for it to actually have any real world benefits. Is the slight increase in rotor diameter really worth it?

Other options that I was looking into were the LGT rear brakes or the 06 WRX rear brakes.

I did this mod this weekend and I can say confidently that it is one of the best mods I've done for my car.

Gone is the incessant dipping and bowing that you got with the stock setup, only to be replaced by a much more evened out, neutral bias. There is still more front bias with this setup (I am running stock calipers w/ Bobcats, SS lines, and Motul 5.1), but like I said it is SO much more balanced.

I actually look forward to stop and go traffic!

I don't know if this will help you out though since you are upgrading your front setup too. If I were you and I had the cash, I would definitely go with the LGT setup for the rear. But this coming from a guy that thinks that all of the BBK upgrades are overkill for most applications.

Thanks for the info

I would agree about bbks are overkill for 99% of the drivers out there. I was looking into doing LGT front and rear brakes or the 06 wrx brakes for my 92x wagon and after pricing everything out with pads, calipers, rotors, clips and SS lines...I was only 2-3 hundred away from those gorgous STi Bremobs that some vendors are selling. 1200 for the complete front kit (brand new) was hard to resist lol.

What pads are most people running with the H6 upgrade? I had good experiences with Hawks on my bmw and the Sti bbk will come with ferrado pads.

Also, are the stock H6 rotors from suby painted/coated to prevent rusting? Seems that way when i look at pics posted but just wanted to confirm. I think going for vented/cross drilled rotors in the rear is a waste of money unless the oem ones are prone to warping issues.

Does anybody sell SS brake lines for just the rears?

290mm is about 10% bigger than stock (266mm). Definitely has real world benefits with the stock fronts, I can't imagine it being anything but good with the Brembos.

The only benefit of the LGT or WRX 2-pots is going to be the vented rotor - giving better heat dissipation. You have to ask yourself whether you are really capable of fading the rears to justify that IMO.

FYI I'm using Carbotech Bobcats.

What about piston/pad size between the stock wrx rear caliper, Lgt rear caliper and the 06 rears?

I could care less about the rears being vented or not since I highly doubt I'll ever get them to fade during normal day to day driving or even during a small autox event.

They definitely came with a coating. As far as resistance to rust, I think that the OEM rotors are very good at it. I bought some aftermarket rotors for the front and they started to rust only a couple of weeks in...

And good luck finding only SS lines for the rear. I suggest trying to find some used, or buying and selling what you don't need.

Whoa lots of info in that thread.

So it looks like you guys right....theres really no need to get the LGT rear setup over the cheaper H6 because the only difference is vent/non-vent rotors which i don't care about.

THe H6 upgrade was was so worth it. As mentioned above it managed to take out so much on the nose diving that went on during braking that it made stopping much more predictable.

As for rusting...even the OEM units were doing that for me so I hit the hats with some hi-temp engine paint and now I dont have that problem.
