How long does it take for a bearing to spin after the damge starts?
I know this is a question with no answer but I was just wondering if I could get some ballpark numbers. I am somewhat confused after an oil change last night. After all of the spun bearing talk, I decided to poke through my oil after seeing a "possible" small gold flake on my dipstick last week. After running though it with a spoon for awhile, I managed to find one other spec of grit that looked gold to me, but when I shine the flashlight at it, I really dont see any gold sparkles. My question is, If I do have a problem, would it be likely that by my next oil change I would see an increase in gold sparkles?
A cliff noted question would be, if i started to develop a bad bearing today when would i REALLY start to see gold flecks? a few months or could it just shoot a few flecks every once in awhile for a couple years? What seems to be the trend?

it could take a few days or a few weeks depending on how you drive, I wouldnt drive it. You could cause more than just the bearing to fail.

It sounds to me like your being a bit paranoid and that nothing is really wrong...what kind of oil do you use? One or two flakes of foreign debris does not necessarily mean any bearings are going. I would continue to drive as normal while carefully checking the oil after each oil change for any obvious bearing break-down.

If you're worried about it, send it in for an analysis.

here you go. http://www.blackstone-labs.com They send you the sample kit for free. As far as how long your engine will last with bearing damage...who knows, it depends on how you drive it. For instance, I had an 89 4runner with a blown out rear main seal, I drove it regularly as my daily driver/light hauling for a year and a half with no porblems what so ever. I took it up to the mountains one weekend with 4 of my buddys, our hiking gear, ac running, and 4 wheel drive kicking strong...and when we came down off the mountain...knock-knock-knock-knock-knock. I garranty that if I had not put her under so much stress all at once she would have gone another year without issue. |

All motors get some particles of metal in the oil, trans fluid, rear end fluid, ect.

I was just sort of wondering if there was a problem, if i would see it progress over a somewhat short period of time if the car is driven daily. I'm just going to keep driving it the way I always have and hope i dont have shimmery oil next oil change. |
