Anyone working / recently work in Iraq?
Looking mainly for non-military people who have been over there to work.
i pretty much got a job offer over there, but i want to hear about what people think who have been over there. I will most likely turn it down, but im just looking to hear stories

I've worked with them on many occasions. Private Contractors (f*cking mercenaries, I don't care what you think), engineers, cleaning crew, you name it I've worked with them.

well....
while i was over there (retired mil.)i was in direct contact with the IT people all the time, you will love it or hate it. The guys i was around all LOVED it they had the hook up on everything and the living conditions are what they are but the contracts at that time were nice but the first $80k was tax free not the whole thing so if money is the object i'd be sure to get that figured.
good luck |

my buddy is sitting in Kuwait now, after 13 months doing IT at the embassy compound in Baghdad (getting rocked by mortars day in and day out). He's done.....time to go. Took a job in Germany instead....told me 'Iraq ages you'. He had the option to extend for a year. We're all just glad he's out safe, even though he's not moving back here

yup.
I'm pretty sure the contractor offering you the job won't exactly tell you where you're going to be at. If you do take it, most likely it'll be the last day at CRC that they'll tell you. I saw some contractors there get rather disappointed and pissed off when they got their orders. those contractors were working for ITT I have a bunch of friends in IT that came over to south west asia from ft. huachuca. They either love it or just want to do their time and get the **** outta there. Most of them were open-minded and just wanted to see why we were over here. <off topic>i have friend that's over at a ****ty camp. every single morning at five after the mosque is done blasting it's morning prayer, his FOB gets mortared. Pretty crazy, since whenever I hear the mosque in front of my apartment I get annoyed. But he'll always associate it with getting bombed. When he came to visit my friends and I in Kuwait, we saw he was still nervous too, since even fireworks made him jump and strike the running pose. He also has pictures of inside his bathrooms where you can see shrapnel holes from being constantly mortared. that's a ****ty way to go.<ot> |

Right, only up to a certain amount is tax free. You are going to hate it, I am telling you.
I just got back, military, not civi. Anyway, it DOES depend on what you are doing. If you don't have a 4 year degree, expect less than 100k unless your in the sheeez. Plus you are not protected like the military is. You are a civilian in a war zone, you have to remember that. Unless you go DOD, I wouldn't go. |

yeah, just got back in June, although my trip was only for about a month. I didn't mind al asad, but Baghdad is teh suck. You will most likely stay in a tent, and that just blows, but I guess you get used to it. I worked on top of sadaams palace, and went t a couple of other sites. If you travel between bases or along route Irish for any reason, request a rhino... If I wasnt on my iPhone, I would post pics of our shot to hell armored vehicles... Anyway, mortors daily, gunfire 24/7... Pm me if you decide to go, I will have some advce for you, and Since you are from the same area, I imagine we might have a lot in common...

dude for what you are going to be doing/making that is so cake. The whole country has pretty much quieted down from the worst. And if you can stomache the risk when you get their look around you and see all the guys in uniform pulling down not even a 10th of what you will be making and going outside the wire everyday. I am sure it will put things into perspective.
