Default 1999 ej22 vs 2001 ej22, different heads? Seeking help

So I have a 1999 l coupe that I am trying to fix because it has terrible engine knock, I bought an engine for it from a 2001 Impreza outback sport and faced the issue that my intake would not fit onto the new engine, hence I realized that the heads were further apart and the bolts were in a different position, I didnít expect that, but would there be an issue if I swapped the old heads onto the new engine? Are there any sensors that would cause me issues? Should I just buy an older engine? Would the compression ratios be the same?

Getting stale, but either your '99 or the '01 isn't what you think.

These would both be Phase 2/PII engines. The IM should fit on both. That includes the 2.2 and 2.5 SOHC engines.

The '93-'98 Phase 1/PI SOHC are NOT compatible with the PII heads.

Edit:

To clarify:

The SOHC (and DOHC) Phase 1/ P1 Intake manfolds are not compatible across Phases And neither are the electronics.

And you can't put '96-'99 EJ25D DOHC IM on a '90-'98 SOHC and vice versa.

So...the heads need to match your intake manifold and electronics, assuming you're running the stock ECU.

I put 03 wrx heads on a 96 ej22. So I don't know why you couldn't switch the heads out.

He should be able to use the shortblock of whatever the new motor is? Put all the old stuff back on with right head gasket and should work?

Maybe some pics of new and old motors would help?

It has been a couple months since OP posted
