dunno what the BEST is...
i have a cat-back 2.5" custom piping w/custom muffler (which is soon to be removed and replaced w/something less-hon-duh lookin/sounding) i removed the resonator and 1 cat... the noise level is LOUD, but i like it that way... the 2.5" piping works great w/my intake... noticed an increase in HP right away...

But it is not nearly as loud as Ken's typing... Can you turn off Caps there, buddy? (Someone had to be the bad guy... might as well be me)
I don't think 'Gal's GT is too loud, the cops think so though... I think Pat (Akiata) has a 98 with a Stromung, and it sounds sweet... just a rumble until he gets on it... A |

Andy, I have a 97! Anyway, I like my Stromung, its not very loud inside the car. You can hear it with the radio turned off. I have heard that N/A cars should stay with 2.25" tubing and not go bigger because you want some back pressure or you will lose torque. The Stromung will bolt right up to your mid pipe (you can do it yourself) with just 2 bolts and it comes with 2.25" pipe. I took it to a shop and had them remove my resonator and put in 2.25" from the cat back. I don't think it added any HP but it sounds alot better than stock.

So Sue Me, Pat! :P
noprob about the caps... I work with CAD guys all day and they leave their caps on when they ICQ me... I give them a thoughough tounge lashing... It is just much easier to read without... Oh, and Pat, I never asked you: how is your torque curve now? Did you lose much low end when you put in the intake and exaust? I should probably ask Jim (euroauto), because he also has the Borla headers, *and* a 2kGT (but he is always up skiing ) A |

I think I did loose some torque but I did get some more up past 3k. Its also much easier on the engine when redline shifting. Its hard to explain but the engine seems to shift easier.
Oh ya Andy, how much money do you make? I might sue you! You will help me get my turbo! "Powered by Red Bull" |

I love the Fujitsubo LEGALIS R silent type for my 98 Legacy GT.
It is only a rear end section, but I could still feel the boost from mid to top end without losing the bottom end. Since I got the silent type, there is just minimum noise from exhaust. Rear section piping is 3 inch using stock mid pipe. I paid about $500 for it. |

Ken - I think there are Borlas for the MY99s, but I think there are some issues with getting them into a Legacy (a cross member is in the way), it just takes a tweak in the bend somewhere...
Pat - I make enogugh to get Johnny Cockran to defend me, and then counter-sue for legal fees and your muffler and AFC! A |

Back to the original question...I have the JC Sports 2.5" cat-back on my 99 Legacy GT. The sound is incredible, and I get tons of compliments on it. It is very deep/raspy like a rally car, but is tame enough to when you drive easy, it won't be obnoxious. My brother (who has a Minnam Stage 2 Impreza 2.5RS) loves my exhaust, and wants to steal it.
For the record, the exhaust is just some 2.5" piping (no resonators) and an Arospeed muffler. The only reason I got it from JC Sports was because a local distributor had one in stock, so I knew I wouldn't have to wait. My 18mm rear swaybar tho...what a hassle. Be forewarned. I would just get the muffler and have a shop due the piping and it will cost about the same as what I paid, maybe cheaper. Later! Kev www.lagging.com |

Kev,
Are you saying the 18mm rear sway bar somehow interferes with the bigger exhaust? I know the bar passes close to the exhaust, but I'd have to crawl under the car tomorrow to see how close it actually is. I've never heard anybody comment on that before. Pat Olsen '99 Legacy 2.5GT 5 speed sedan PS I'm not sure JC Sports sells the Legacy exhaust anymore. |

No, that's not what I meant. I was trying to talk about JC Sports poor customer service.
First, they sold me a 20mm bar saying it would fit. It didn't. The Legacy bars need a slight bend in the middle to clear the undercarriage. No big deal, I tell them, and they say they will get me an 18mm bar. It took over 4 MONTHS to get the bar to me. Order from them at your own discretion. Kev |

I'd be interested to see how the stock muffler would sound if the midpipe was replaced with a straight pipe (ie remove the third little cat and the resonator). I might make a straight pipe myself, just keep the stock stuff so I can clamp it back together if necessary. Give me a couple weeks to do that and I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

whoa hey.. you already answered those in the above.. so i will ask another question.. was thier any noticable power increase? how bout a decrease of bottom end due to the large size of pipeing 2.5" wow thats big for normily aspirated cars. any more comments would be great.. i wouldnt mind gettin the Tri exhuast when it comes out 2.25" with an apexi N1 muffler..
ok thanks BeAn |

Well, my exhaust is quite loud. Personally, I love it. But it may be too intrusive to some people. I love the deep/burbly sound from it. The Weapon-R intake is pretty loud at high RPM's also.
My car won't be mistaken for a granny Legacy, that's for sure. Kevin www.lagging.com |

Patrick : putting a midpipe and keeping your stock muffler will not help in any case for performance. In fact u it will be loud as the resonator is on the midpipe. Your stock muffler will be the bottleneck. Go for the full cat back. Yes it will be louder. But that's because the gas are running at a much higher velocity thanks to less restictive piping.

UPDATE
I just installed the Stromung Catback Exhuast, it sounds very mellow and throaty at low rpm...when you get up on the rpm it has a higher pitch but not intrusively loud...looks stock, maybe just a half inch bigger tip...but the key is that it looks stock and the car doesnt sound stock! While I was under the car, I saw the piping, cat, and a couple of other pieces connected to the down pipe...?????...has anyone made header, & piping to avoid those extra pieces...there is like three or four section that make up the whole entire exhuast system...I purchased a universal Random Technology cat and I will have it custom installed with piping to the stromung...all that is left now is headers and the piping from the headers to the cat...ANY ADVICE!!! Installed so far: Stromung Exhuast, Weapon-R F1 Intake, Unorthodox Racing Pulley, Magnecor Wires, NGK plugs Future Installs: Weapon-R Fuel Pressure Riser, Superchip or Venom Ignition Component, Apexi Super AFC or SFC-Hyper, KYB AGX!!! Later...Crazy Ken |
