and people say the GTR is expensive. The Supra, RX7, 300zx, 3000GT were expensive cars in those days.
Inflation aside, the Yen was a lot stronger, especially compared to the dollar. But I think at some point, Toyota did lower the price of the Supra by around $10,000, particularly after 1996 (not sure of what exact year) when other cars like the 300ZX and RX-7 were pulled out of the U.S. market.

Exactly, but it's the urber performance version that people keep asking to return, not the very good, basic, and affordable cars that made them iconic in the first place. At least Nissan realized that when the brought the Z back to market. Mazda went another direction and brought the Miata to market as a brand new model.

Toyota has been floundering but I think the FT96 may finally get Toyota back into the game.

I'd also like to see Toyota bring back the SR-5 versions of the Corolla with a true sporting setup and not just a few badges. Put a high reving 4 in there and forget getting it to handle like the appliance version to apease everyone.

I remember when my father was shopping for a 4Runner in '97, he brought home a Toyota "catalog" that had the entire lineup for that year; the Supra was in it and that's when I first started lusting.

Also, an MK3 with bolt-ons (stock turbo/cams) is probably only going to make in the low 3xxwhp range and they weigh about 3,400lbs which by today's standards, isn't earth shattering.

I know exactly which catalog you are talking about -- I remember it having one page (or spread) for the regular Supra (and I think it was in a plain color, maybe black or tan), with the next page/spread for the Supra Turbo in red.

Toyota’s newly appointed chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada wants a new Supra

Quote:
In a recent interview, Takeshi Uchiyamada a.k.a. Toyota’s newly appointed chairman revealed the fact that he wants to see the upcoming Toyota and BMW co-developed sports car become the new Supra. Moreover, he also added that the next sports car should be just like the Supra in order to avoid killing the sales of the smaller Toyota GT86. “It’s futile if we make something similar [to the GT86]”, said Uchiyamada. Still, he also added that this is what he wants but he is not the man in charge with the decisions. For those who don’t know, earlier this year Toyota and BMW announced plans to co-develop a new mid-sized sports car. The Toyota Supra was discontinued 11 years ago, back in 2002. The Supra has a history of 24 years, involving four generations, so a successor of the car should definitely be built.
That article references this article:

Supra was available until 02

For some reason I thought it was discontinued before that.

Yeah, definitely no point in making something that competes with the GT-86.

What was the price of the last gen Supra that was the NA model, base trim or whatever? I know nothing of the details of the Supra, only that it's one of my all-time favorite sports car design languages. A 1998 Supra could still look relevant in 2013.

From what I remember, ORIGINALLY it was just under $40k for the base model and under $50k for the Turbo, but it's because of the strong yen at the time. Eventually as some of the other cars started to die out (300ZX, RX-7, 3000GT), I remember an article in Motor Trend (likely in the one where they talk about all of the upcoming cars for the next model year), Toyota had significantly reduced the MSRP of the cars by close to $10k.

Okay thanks. Yeah, if they released the NA Supra today I'd expect about $30k for the Base trim since it seems kinda fair compared to the FR-S' price point. It looks like the NA only made 220HP in the 2JZ-GE in a car weighing about 3200lbs? They'd definitely need to shed some weight or increase the horsepower if a compromise HAD to be made, otherwise doing BOTH would be preferred.

This could be interesting. Hopefully it'll be powered by and inline six.

Don't count on it unless that is a BMW engine under the hood. Toyota has moved to Vs in any gasser bigger than a 4cyl. We'd likely see the replacement for the current IS-F V8 or the replacement for the 2GR-FSE that is in the GS350 and IS350 in this Supra. I'd imagine both engines have a replacement on the horizon since neither is exactly a spring chicken and their competition using forced induction.

By the time this new supra comes out I will be more than ready to order it in a heart beat so long as its not over 40-45k.

Unless its being built to compete with the likes of the GT-R I don't see the need for it to come with a price that is beyond the average consumer's income. I don't even see a need for the next gen Supra to compete with the GT-R to begin with.

The LFA was designed to beat the GT-R and it did. Currently the Nurburgring edition is top dog out of japan going around The Ring beating out the black edition GT-R. Though the price tag for that car is not within reach of anyone not making 6 figures there is no need to try and make another competitor for the GT-R. Especially when the GT-R new is over 100k already. Better off making a 40-45k sports car that competes with M3s and the like and sell more units. (I understand they plan to co-develope with BMW)

When Toyota designs a performance car they do it right and know how to produce a high quality product that is more durable than it logically needs to be. They are also typically a lot of fun and have a large cult following that has been patiently waiting for a performance rebirth of Toyota. The GT-86 is a great start but they have a ways to go to get back to that same level that they were once at.

The last gen Supra was a perfect example of performance with Toyota's quality reputation.

I would love to see the day they go back to having a range of fun non beige performance cars that dont have a lexus or scion badge attached. But I also admit it probably would never happen and I am left to most likely search for good examples of their iconic performance cars from the 80s and 90s. (If I somehow came into tons of money I would have a big ass garage to put all of them in lol)

The golden age of Toyota performance/fun cars was when they produced a sports car for multiple niche markets. The Corolla GTS, MR2 Supercharged/Turbo, Supra and Celica GT-Four.

/end mindless nostalgic banter

Before f&f came out, I was looking at supras to purchase. Clean turbo'd ones were easily found for $15k with 6speed. Found a few with targa for under $20. Now, not a chance in hell.

Perhaps this is a glimpse into the future Supra? If it is, pricing should be somewhere around the IS F...Toyota does sell high dollar $80K Landcruisers after all. It's not like Nissan, where the GTR is kinda out of place sitting next to Versas on the showroom floor.

40-45K For a Supra? Not happening. Evos are easily 40k now, with STI's creeping up there. Supra I would expect to start at $49,995 with most in the mid fifties.

Kind of does. I like the idea of a BRZ STI / FRS Supra trim.

Yeah, sticky market. No point in neutering the Supra name, unless they want to kill Mustang Boss/Camaro 1LT performance for the money. Supra will need to have mid 400 hp to compete. That's not gonna be cheap. IS-F is mostly already there, no need reinvent the wheel. But Toyota will have a tough time coming in under 50K starting when the IS-F is already 60K over...

If anyone can afford to do it, it's Toyota. OTOH the market is kind of soft right now for GT cars........

Now I think about it. I don't think the Supra needs to compete against the GTR nor next NSX.

The Supra was never as good or in the same level as those cars. It wasn't as advanced as the Skyline GTR nor was it nimble and sharp as the RX-7. It competed more against the 300ZX, were good cars but not in the same league.

They could bring it back with around 375hp and ~$40k to compete against the Z. Going up against Godzilla and NSX is unnecessary. The Supra name just doesn't have as much charisma.
