We have to have the phone... Wife uses it ALL the time. Mainly to talk to her mom. I say use your cell phone since we have Unlimited minutes but the speakerphone on the "house" phone is better... It's a lost cause.

Nope. Not even HBO Go. Not that I would use it. I don't think there is anything on HBO that I want to watch.

I use my buddy's Netflix account so if there was a show/movie on there we can watch it. Also I like that the X1 box has the Netflix app built into it since my wife doesn't switch inputs on the TV. She's an old soul...

Finally went to the Xfinity store to replace my wifi router that stopped wifi'ing.

My best speed test (over wifi) with my 150mbs Blast service was 30dn/6up (for years).

I got the 'newest' modem and ran an exact same speed test...244dn/13up.

Obihai ($30-50) + Google Voice = free landline service (911 support is $1/mo). I set my parents up with it like 5 years ago. the only tricky thing is if you want to keep your landline number you need to port it to an intermediary (T-Mobile prepaid) before porting to GV because GV doesn't port directly from "landlines."

When was the last time you called? Did your bill recently go up?

Have you had her try wifi calling? I know when my wife and I use hangouts vs the regular cell service. the audio is MUCH clearer.

My Mom gave up her landline at the age of 68 and switched to a cell phone only.

Although I assume this may be a classic pick your battles situation.

It's not so much that the cell phone (Moto G Play) doesn't have clear audio.. Its more so that it doesn't get as loud as the speakerphone on the landline phone (forget which cordless phones we have).

^ This. I don't mind paying the money per month since she uses the "landline" but I wouldn't have it if it was up to me lol

ROFL. I could probably get 2Gbps service from them for $177/month. I'm only paying $49 and speed test hits 150Mpbs.

was actually up for about 9 months. I almost alway negotiate them back down to the new customer rate.

This time I had legit options to move over to so did the cancel service routine.

It took less than 5 mins to do. Of course CA comcast service is excellent.

can't find the comcast is pure concentrated evil thread, so this goes here:

The company says customers will see an increase in download speeds, but the perk is reserved only for those who pay for both internet and cable.
as I wouldn't let comcast get anywhere near my house, all I can do is point and laugh.

as I have business comcast at my coffee shop (because no one else provides us service), only internet, I don't need TVs in a coffee shop, I weap for myself.

A couple days ago I finally got around to installing my Surfboard modem, which, surprisingly, was super damn easy.

I had looked up all the steps, written down account numbers and phone numbers to call, etc. Didn't need any of them.

The new device went in and turned on, then just opened a browser, and bam linked to my account and good to go.

Kinda bummed that I didn't get way better speeds, though. My speedtest results are still about what I got before.

However, I forgot I have phone service also, and the new modem doesn't have a phone jack, sooo....guess I drop the phone service, too! Kid is getting a phone this year anyway, so I don't feel the need to have a landline just for 911 anymore.

TL;DR - installed third party (motorola surfboard) modem, process was hella smooth. Highly recommend

Speaking of modems... I've owned my own modem for 5 years or so and I just got my bill in the mail yesterday from Comcast (Xfinity)... They decided to add a $11/month modem rental fee on it.

So while making dinner I called the Customer Service # and basically he couldn't take it off so he put a note on my account and said someone should call me within 10 days... If I don't hear from anyone in 10 days to call them back.

WTF

Call back and escalate. You might want to have an idea of how long they've been charging so you have ammunition. While I don't know how much you'll be able to get back you can at least likely get free channels you don't currently have for N number of months to make up for it.

Oh sorry. This month's bill was the first time they have charged me for a modem rental fee. Previous months (hell for the past 5 years or so) they did not charge us the $11/month modem rental fee.

I just reupped for another 2 years. Locked in at $140/month for a 220+ channel package with 400Mbps internet and their security service. Of course there is $40 in assorted taxes and fees on top Of that.

I'll cut the chord some day, I'm sure.

Yeah I figured it was the get me off the phone thing.. But I was cooking dinner and didn't have a ton of time.

I'm going away Friday for Punta Cana so it will have to wait until I get back.

I'll be heading to the local store soon anyway, to check out the mobile plans. I'm adding a new phone, so will also return equipment and get it all proper.

In theory

Lately, random channels can't be accessed for who knows what reason. All they say is to restart the system, which doesn't help. All a reset does is occasionally bring up a second connection error.

I am also in an area that is supposed to see increased speeds, but no test shows any difference.

It will be nice to have a second option (Fios) when we move next month.
