I'm getting one of Rallispec's MY00 intakes and was curious about the same question - particularly since they open the hood vent.. Apparently they are taking the plate that closes the vent, and using stand-offs, mounting it a little lower to promote airflow. My big thing was "am I gonna suck in water" - their answer - nope.. Shouldn't have a problem.. I am going to put a bag over it when I wash the car, but not worry about it otherwise..

Anywho - if you're not opening the vent, don't worry about it..

Strepto, where is that intake you mentioned from Rallispec ? Their web page shows "comming soon". What do you know about how they are going to set it up ?

I ask because i really want an intake and Have seen a few different designs available.

Thanks

Actually, that was me.. hehehe.. There's a thread in the general forum - it has photos.. I've also been talking to them about it since march - I was going to have one installed with my N1 catback, but had an unexpected expense. It looks like a great set-up, around $350 bucks..

Formula1,

I have an ISR intake on MY00 Impreza RS. I have opened the hood scoop but not the small vent above the filter. I live in Minnesota and have driven many miles in down pooring rain and behind vehicles throwing all of the water mist at me and have had no problems. I was also concerned about the same thing when I first did my intake but decided to give it a try. We'll see if I am proven wrong. Good luck and go for it.

I'm still a little bit iffy about most of these intakes. I know on the MY00's that if the motor senses it's taking in hot air, it actually retards the timing. Freeing up flow is great and everything, but unless you're tapping into a cold air source (Fender or hood scoop) I see them being more of a detriment than anything else.
I don't see the hood vents being much of a cold air source but rather just what it says; a hood vent. I'm pretty sure a low pressure is created outside of those hood vents while driving. The higher the speed, the more efficient the low pressure. Back in highschool my auto teacher used to illustrate this principle by filling a bucket full of water. He then blew a stream of compressed air over the top of the bucket and it literally "sucked" (if there was such a thing) the water right out. The same thing can be done with a straw and a small container. The low pressure that's created will actually push the water out of the container, up the straw, and into the air....
Just a thought...

Unhappy Weapon R intake vs. water

Guys, one quick queston!
I have an intake on by weapon -r and the rainy summer season has just started in Florida! Is there a chance this filter or in that case any exposed filter will take in water? I opened the hood the other day after driving home in the rain to see that the inner fender and all areas surrounding it were wet! is this normal, to have an exposed filter this close to water?

Does anyone else share this concern?

John

if the vent directly above the filter is open you will very likely suck up some water. I don't think you need to worry if that vent is closed.
