I will try to think of some.

The sad reality is that it was so common, it became the norm, and stories that would blow a normal person's mind really didn't stick as anything special.

Its funny, every so often someone posts a thread asking about becoming a mechanic.

It never fails, every time, everyone who is, or was a tech, comes in and says the same thing.

Run. Don't walk, RUN.

And that story about the customer bitching me out because their new car had the TPMS light come on, isn't about ONE customer.

It was a nonstop flow of morons. We kept a 7 gallon portable tank and a couple tire pressure gauges up at the service counter so we could just go check it and send the customer on their way.

Every once in a while you would get some douche who despite you laying it out to them in friendly words, explained in a way even a 3rd grader would understand, still demanded that we have a tech look it over since OBVIOUSLY there was something wrong. Not a problem. Car gets pulled around back and parked. The more of a hurry the customer seemed to be in, the longer we let it sit. If they were genuinely concerned, and just wanted the best for their car, we would pull it in, put it up on a lift and give the tires a good once over just to make sure there weren't any nails or anything (even though we knew there weren't). But if they were an ass about it, we were as well. (but we smiled the whole time and held their balls to make them feel special)

I feel your pain Dave. I too have been a tech and a service advisor. Might as well be a garbage man- less hours, less stupid people to deal with...

Not a tech story but still pretty dumb.

A coworker some how hit something that put a hole in his oil pan. He made it back to work with about half his oil. The rest drained in the parking lot. He calls a tow truck. I was talking with him about it while the tow guy was doing his thing. He gets lined up then asked if he can barrow the keys to drive it on. My coworker hand him the keys and says sure why not. I stopped him and let Jim know trying to drive a can with no oil was a vary bad idea. The truck driver looked confused like how was he ever going to get the car on the flat bed. I calmly asked him if he had a wench. He exclaims, o ya I could just wench it up!

Some people just can't use they're brains. Glad I was there. That driver could have made just a new oil pan turn into a new engine.

Never worked at an auto shop or service center, but from doing a lot of my own work on my cars, i understand where everyone is coming from. I find it easiest to to work with people when you (the customer or the mechanic) is civil and humble.

I would probably have made more as a garbage man than I did as a Kia service writer.

As long as the repairs are accurate and he doesn't screw up often because of the speed I'm perfectly okay with it lol.

He is 27. Owns now a house + 3 rental properties. Bets he will retire by around 40

What do you mean by 3 figures? Most people make 5 figures and 6 figures is considered good.

This dealership is local to me, and I think it's a fitting story for here as well... http://jalopnik.com/5949701/driver-r...?post=53311450

Quote:
When you take your car to get serviced, how do you know the mechanics aren't driving it like it's a getaway car in a heist movie? This 2010 Camaro SS driver figured out one very clever way: he placed a voice recorder in the car to capture the dealership employees driving and working on the car.

He's probably glad he did - his recording captures audio of mechanics beating the crap out of the car.

According to the video and the description on YouTube, this driver had a gear grinding problem at parking lot speeds and so he took it to Best Chevrolet in Easley, South Carolina. But the audio captures the technicians "cutting ass" in the car at high speeds for 20 minutes and joking about other times they've done the same.

"He drives like a ****ing maniac when he gets in one," one employee said to another about the tech who drove the car.

But that isn't the worst part. That comes when the shop is apparently describing how to bill the customer and charge General Motors for warranty work as well.

"If it was me, I'd write this ****er up at him buying a clutch for it... him buying a clutch disk, let them warranty the pressure plate, bill them in on two days later so I'll get paid to put a clutch in it and then get paid to put a pressure plate in it.

Really nice, Easley Chevrolet. We hope this driver's problem gets resolved soon, because it wouldn't look too good for the dealership if this went to court.

Well the part that really sucked was the whole "making the customer pay for a clutch, etc. ordeal"

I worked at a Dodge dealership when the ram srt-10 came out. We got one in on the trailer with 8 miles on it. By the time it made it into the showroom, it had almost 500 miles on it. Every tech and every salesman had a go at it.

Okay, I kinda figured that's what you meant but I've never heard it referred to as 3 figures. I've always heard it referred to as 6 figures.
