These suckers hold the rear hub to the lateral links. Typically, they either bend or rust and are really hard to remove. The four I sent to the plater came back great and since they were not bent, I used them. If you had to buy them from Subaru, they are like $23 each!
JDM axle nuts, yo! Hubs installed:

Well, I made some more progress tonight.
A couple of nights ago, I painted the underside of the car. Why? I don't know. But it was quick and relatively easy. It looks pretty nice too. Until the first puddle I'm sure. |

First, I got an old STi fuel tank and metal shied thing from Jay (thanks dude! ). My want for this was that it had drain plugs and for whatever the reason, the wagon didn't come with drain plugs. Since I had the fuel tank and all the lines out to remove the ridiculous amount of mud from the underside of the car, I figured I'd simply throw the STi tank back in in place of the WRX one. Not so easy. It turns out some of the lines are different both in the way they attach to the hard lines on the body, but the evap system/filler neck has differences too. I fixed this problem by swapping all of the lines and valves from the WRX tank to the STi tank and all was well. There is a silly amount of lines down there to deal with.
Was it worth it just for drain plugs? Probably not, but it's done now. Some lousy pictures of the STi shield and tank (hint: looks just like any other tank): |

I also installed the rear subframe assembly. It's stupid easy to install, literally 6 bolts if you pre-assemble it on the floor, away front the car. I just put the R180 on a trans jack and hoisted it up. Seriously took about 10 minutes.
I installed the Kartboy outrigger bushings while I was doing it as well. |

Lastly, I messed around with the shifter linkage. Originally, when I bought the 6 speed, I bought linkage from another NASIOC member. He told me that it was brand new JDM linkage. When it arrived, it was in fact brand new and unopened in the box, but I never investigated what the difference between JDM and USDM linkage was if any.
The JDM linkage was gold, so I assumed it was the non-factory sort throw linkage. A few month later I stumbled upon some used green linkage which is supposed to be the USDM factory short throw linkage so I bought it. It also came with some kartboy front and rear bushings. Tonight I went to swap the two and found out that they were identical. So the linkage I had was the factory short throw (which is pretty pathetic). All of the lengths, angles and pivot points line up when compared: So I decided to keep the original gold linkage since it was in much better shape (on the trim rings), but I swapped over the kartboy stuff. Front bushing. Stock is a joke. Rear bushings. Once again, the stocker is laughably soft. Installed: |

I obviously haven;t driven with the new bushings yet, but already, I can tell there is far less play in the shifter assembly and you fell more of a "click" when moving through gears. I think I might order a Kartboy short shifter and call it a day.

The main reason I didn't go was because I had to work late and was on call until about 9:00. Going to the met, while fun, is kind of a pain as it's a 35 minute drive from my house. Plus I just need to get this car done.

Thanks dude. How's your car coming? Did you get the IC pipes and front bumper figured out? I'm glad the diff wasn't something more serious. I was not looking forward to rebuilding/re-shimming that sucker with you. It's a lot of work!

He can't remember to bring my xboxes from his house, I doubt he'll remember to grab your stuff while he's there, AND bring it to the meet with him.

I'm not mad, or bitching, just giving you a hard time. If you don't want to do it, just say it. I'll have someone else do it or send it into Microsoft at this point. |
